University students' lifestyle in the context of physical activity, sedentary habits, and academic achievements
Ivan Prskalo, Jurij Planinšec, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study aims to explore the relationship between physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and academic achievement among university students. A total of 243 students aged 18 to 24 years participated. Physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire – Short Form, while sedentary behaviour was measured with the SIT-Q-7d. Academic achievement was based on self-reported average grades and compared across physical activity levels using one-way ANOVA. Results indicate that higher physical activity is not necessarily linked to better academic performance. Excessive involvement in physical activity may reduce study time, potentially leading to lower academic outcomes.

University teachers’ attitudes towards ESP and EMI in Croatian higher education : implications for internationalisation and curriculum development
Ana Penjak, Simon Zupan, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Following the Bologna Process (2001) and Croatia’s accession to the European Union (2013), English has assumed a more prominent role in Croatian higher education (HE). While Croatian remains the dominant language of instruction, universities are increasingly expected to internationalise their programmes through English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English-Medium Instruction (EMI) courses. This study analyses the attitudes of content-area (non-language) university teachers at the Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Split, Croatia, towards the use of English in their teaching, focusing particularly on ESP and EMI. The aim is to examine how these attitudes contribute to the internationalisation of HE and support students’ academic and professional development through discipline-specific English instruction. The results obtained from the data collected using an online questionnaire indicate strong support for ESP course integration, with most teachers recognising its value in enhancing students’ employability and domain-specific language proficiency. While EMI was not addressed directly, several items suggest teachers are aware of EMI-related demands and express positive attitudes towards its benefits. Notably, teachers with Erasmus experience showed greater confidence in English and more openness to EMI. These findings highlight the need to expand ESP offerings, strengthen EMI-related training, and develop institutional language policies aligned with internationalisation goals.

Are pedagogical students more creative than students of non-pedagogical programs?
Dejan Zemljak, Mateja Ploj Virtič, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The study aims to explore whether there are significant differences in self-assessed creativity between pedagogical and nonpedagogical students, the potential connection between creativity and pedagogical or non-pedagogical study orientation, whether the pedagogical or non-pedagogical orientation of studies influences creativity, and additionally whether there are significant differences in self-assessed creativity between the genders, related to the results of creativity self-assessment. The results showed no statistically significant differences in creativity between students according to gender or according to whether they were pedagogical or nonpedagogical students. We can conclude that the expression of creativity is likely to be influenced by many other factors.

Typology of health-related behavior : hierarchical cluster analysis among university students
Joca Zurc, Matej Majerič, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Physical and mental health show strong associations with health-related behavior. Uni versity students are one of the at-risk groups who are in a vulnerable transition phase from adolescence to adulthood, significantly affecting their health-related lifestyle. This study aims to identify different groups of university students with homogeneous health related behavior, considering their dietary habits, physical activity, alcohol and tobacco consumption, mental well-being and lifestyle change motives. For data collection, an anonymous, closed-ended paper-and-pencil questionnaire was administered to a sample of 171 university students. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, a t-test for independent samples, a chi-square test, Spearman correlation and hierarchical cluster analyses (Ward’s method, Dendrogram). On average, students reported good health (M=4.84), including daily physical activity (M = 31.35 min) and regular consumption of fruits (M = 4.02) and vegetables (M = 4.19). The hierarchical cluster analysis revealed two distinct patterns among the students: “Caring for a healthy lifestyle” (N = 69) and “Physically inactive with poor mental well-being” (N = 62). Better health-related behavior was found among male students enrolled in higher study years (p ≤ 0.01). These findings provide newinsights into the different patterns of health-related behavior among university students that require targeted health promotion actions. Universities should develop and implement courses in healthy lifestyles and sustain them in the curricula.

Roles of personal values and information technology usage in forming the university students’ view of environmental sustainability : a preliminary regional study of economics and business students
Nikša Alfirević, Vojko Potočan, Zlatko Nedelko, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study focuses on two significant factors shaping university students’ perception of environmental sustainability. Those are (a) personal values, measured by the Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ) and (b) the usage of and proficiency in information technology. Personal values have been widely used to analyze individual perspectives toward various issues, including environmental ones. As contemporary social arrangements include significant influences from social networks and mobile phone usage, overall engagement with technology becomes an essential factor affecting university student attitudes and behaviors. While the individual impact of those factors can be found in the extant literature, we look into their interaction concerning university student pro-environmental attitudes, measured by the Revised NEP (New Ecological Paradigm) Scale, and their environmental self-efficacy. Our sample comes from the population of undergraduate business and economics students from Central and Southeast Europe, specifically Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro. We discuss our findings in the context of previous studies from the same regions and consider the unique socio-economic factors. The research results address Sustainable Development Goals 4 (quality education), 12 (responsible consumption and production), and 13 (climate action) by analyzing the factors contributing to university student pro-environmental attitudes and their self-efficacy in the context of their information technology usage and proficiency.

Sustainability aspects of food and drinks offered in vending machines at Slovenian universities
Urška Rozman, Mateja Lorber, Anja Bolha, Jasmina Bevc Bahar, Miha Lavrič, Sonja Šostar-Turk, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Introduction: Vending machines offer a convenient way for food distribution, particularly favored by employees, students, and individuals seeking a quick snack. Food vending machines typically offer unhealthy, calorie-dense, and nutrient-poor options, which contribute to the rise of non-communicable diseases. Creating a healthier food environment is crucial, particularly in universities where students are developing their eating habits and becoming more independent. Key considerations for vending machines include the quality, nutritional value, and price of the products with a recent and growing attention toward sustainability. Methods: The present study thoroughly examined 30 vending machines across 30 faculties in Slovenia. The analysis focused on assessing the variety and sustainability of the available products. The following was evaluated through three primary criteria, based on the information available on the product label: nutritional quality, environmental impact (palm oil content, packaging materials, and sustainability certificates), and socioeconomic indicators (suitability for people with special dietary needs). Results: The results revealed a low proportion of products met the proposed sustainability criteria, highlighting the need to promote sustainability in the vending machine industry. Although food categories like dairy products, fruits, and nuts have better nutritional profiles, they are underrepresented. In contrast, items like biscuits, crisps, snacks, and pre-prepared sandwiches often exceed recommended fat, salt, and sugar levels. More than one-quarter of products contained palm oil, only two were labeled as palm oil-free, and a limited proportion of products were suitable for individuals with special dietary requirements such as gluten sensitivity and lactose intolerance. Discussion: Improving the food selection in vending machines, guided by suggested sustainability criteria, presents a promising strategy for reshaping the food environment and promoting sustainable healthy diets, taking into account nutritional, environmental, and socioeconomic indicators.

Pathways to Alternative Transport Mode Choices among University Students and Staff—Commuting to the University of Maribor since 2010
Branka Trček, Beno Mesarec, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The study of commuting behavior at the University of Maribor (UM) was the subject of our research, which focused on the building complex of the four technical faculties (BCTF) and was based on the analysis of two questionnaire surveys (with 1057 and 462 respondents, respectively) and the transport policies implemented at the study site from 2010 to 2020. The research aimed to identify the factors influencing student and staff mode choice/shift over a decade period and to understand the weaknesses, strengths, and opportunities for improving sustainable mobility at the university. Since 2010, active commuting has predominated among students, while car use has decreased by 22%. Female students were 16% more likely to walk than their peers, while male students were 5% and 12% more likely to use bicycles and cars, respectively. Active commuting and car use by staff have not changed since 2010, and there was an insignificant difference between genders, 63% of whom used cars. Mode shifts were primarily related to trip origins, subsidization of bus use, availability or unavailability of free parking, and parking fees. Questionnaire responses were a powerful tool for finding the most effective interventions to manage transport at universities. The results also suggest that transport policies can be more effective if they are planned in coordination with housing policies.

The changing world dynamics of research performance
Marko Marhl, Rene Markovič, Vladimir Grubelnik, Matjaž Perc, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In recent years, a notable diversification in the geographical representation of the World's top universities could be observed. Chinese universities play an increasingly prominent role in these rankings, thus indicating that we might be in the midst of a regional shift in academic performance. To explore this dynamics, we analyze seven years' worth of data used for university rankings by academic subjects from the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). We focus on China, Europe, the USA, and other global regions of the world. We find that China has indeed seen an unprecedented growth in Engineering and Life Sciences research, positioning itself rather firmly as a leader in these fields. Conversely, the USA leads in the Social Sciences, while Europe excels in Geography, Ecology, Public and Business Administration, and Pharmacy. Other regions worldwide stand out in Transportation Science, Nursing, and Hospitality & Tourism Management. These results reveal the evolving landscape of global academic research, highlighting regional strengths and emerging world trends in subject-specifc excellence.

Analysis of study engagement of students in slovenia
Daniil Riumin, 2021, diplomsko delo

Opis: Education at every time of our history was an important part of peoples’ lives. Society developed and so developed education, stating new goals and requiring more time, and becoming more complicated. Today we are living in the era of information. Information nowadays has the greatest value. The modern world’s market is based on information and operations around it. Education has also adjusted to modern trends and now higher education became in demand. The more information you obtain and can operate with the more successful you are today. The GDP of developed countries is strongly connected to the success of higher education institutes. That is why many countries nowadays invest in higher education. One of these countries is Slovenia that made higher education free. Investing so many resources Slovenia is interested in getting high-quality human resources of university graduates. That is why it is very important to consider all factors that affect study success to make them all work. One of the main factors affecting it is study engagement. The main goal of this Diploma work is to research the level of study engagement of university students in Slovenia and analyze the reasons for it. We use the student version of the “UWES” questionnaire to find the level of study engagement of Slovene students and our part of the questionnaire to detect reasons and understand better the situation with study engagement. Three hypotheses were stated to help to perform accurate research. Results of the research showed, that there is no correlation between an average grade in high school and level of study engagement. It also showed an absence of correlation between the level of parents’ education and student’s level of study engagement. According to research results, students that are working on the side of their studies are less engaged in classes, than their colleagues that do not work.
