Integrated management systems based on risk assessment : methodology development and case studies
S. Vulanović, Milan Delić, Bato Kamberović, Ivan Beker, Bojan Lalić, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The implementation of management systems in organizations is often based on a "blind" meeting of requirements set by the selected standard, while these requirements are not in direct relation to the risks of the organizations. Therefore, it often happens that the established management system is not operational or is not aligned with the context and real needs of the organization. This paper presents general model for the design of an integrated management system based on risk assessment of organization's processes. The model was based on the primary hypothesis that a process that has a higher risk should be described in more detail in order to be adequately realized. The presented Model was tested on three diverse companies which had already implemented management systems according to international standards. Comparing the existing with the projected documentation in three companies, it was concluded that the number, scope and structure of documented information were optimized for successful risk management, which lowers the overall costs and enables efficient management of the company. The paper provides scientific approach and methodology for designing the integrated management system in any organization, using existing risks as universal integrating factor.

High-level process modeling—an experimental investigation of the cognitive effectiveness of process landscape diagrams
Gregor Polančič, Katja Kous, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Unlike business process diagrams, where ISO/IEC 19510 (BPMN 2.0) prevails, high-level process landscape diagrams are being designed using a variety of standard- or semi-standard-based notations. Consequently, landscape diagrams differ among organizations, domains, and modeling tools. As (process landscape) diagrams need to be understandable in order to communicate effectively and thus form the basis for valid business decisions, this study aims to empirically validate the cognitive effectiveness of common landscape designs, including those BPMN-L-based, which represent a standardized extension of BPMN 2.0 specifically aimed at landscape modeling. Empirical research with 298 participants was conducted in which cognitive effectiveness was investigated by observing the speed, ease, accuracy, and efficiency of answering questions related to semantically equivalent process landscape diagrams modeled in three different notations: value chains, ArchiMate, and BPMN-L. The results demonstrate that BPMN-L-based diagrams performed better than value chain- and ArchiMate-based diagrams concerning speed, accuracy, and efficiency; however, subjects perceived BPMN-L-based diagrams as being less easy to use when compared to their counterparts. The results indicate that differences in cognitive effectiveness measures may result from the design principles of the underlying notations, specifically the complexity of the visual vocabulary and semiotic clarity, which states that modeling concepts should have unique visualizations.

A comparison of the tolerance analysis methods in the open-loop assembly
P. Kosec, Stanko Škec, Daniel Miler, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Dimensional and geometric tolerances affect both the cost and the functionality of a given product. Finding the acceptable trade-off between the two is among the common engineering tasks. Thus, many tolerance analysis methods are developed to help engineers and assist in the decision-making process. In this article, the authors have assessed four tolerance analysis methods by applying them to the open-loop assembly. The results obtained by the tolerance chart (worst-case) method, Monte-Carlo simulation, vector-loop analysis, and the Unified Jacobian-torsor model were analysed and compared. Additionally, the overview and application guidelines are included for each of the methods, aiming to help both researchers and practitioners. The results have confirmed that there are significant variations in the outputs across the observed methods, implying the need for informed method selection.

A study of classroom potential based on elementary school students’ seating position preferences
Kukuh Rizki Satriaji, Imam Santosa, Achmad Syarief, Andriyanto Wibisono, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Previous research has shown a link between seating position and student interest in and motivation for learning. This study explores classroom potential based on seating preferences and reasons behind student choices. Teachers rarely allow students to select their own seats, despite the benefits of comfort and engagement. Conducted in 5th and 6th elementary grades, this research used a participatory approach involving students and teachers. The study found that students’ seating preferences were influenced by spatial characteristics, opportunities for social engagement, and academic motivations. Understanding these preferences can help create a more conducive learning environment, enhancing student comfort, participation, and overall academic motivation.

Upcycling wool and feather waste into nanofibers via eco-friendly hydrothermally assisted isolation of keratin : a promising approach to tunable functionalities
Simona Strnad, Miša Žnidarič, Mojca Škerget, Maja Čolnik, Lidija Gradišnik, Uroš Maver, Lidija Fras Zemljič, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Hydrothermal degradation processes are a particularly promising eco-friendly approach to keratin isolation from biomass. They, however, result in products with a broad molecular weight distribution, which can be particularly unfavorable for fiber production. In this study, we aimed to determine whether hydrothermally degraded feather and wool waste is suitable to produce nanofibers that retain the key functional properties of keratin, such as antioxidant activity and biocompatibility. Keratin/PEO blends were used for needleless electrospinning of nanofibers cross-linked with two different cross-linkers, ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) and pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA), to improve their stability to water. The surface tension, pH, turbidity, zeta potential, and protein concentration of the keratin extract solutions were analyzed. The morphology of the produced nanofibers was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope, the surface chemical structure by attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR analysis), and the cross-linking success by water contact angle measurements. The antioxidant capacity and the biocompatibility of the nanofiber mats with skin cells were investigated using a 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay and the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) vitality test, respectively. The results showed that despite the unfavorable starting materials with a wide molecular mass range from 3 to 15 kDa and low average molecular weights keratin products obtained by a green hydrothermal extraction process can be used to produce nanofibers with excellent antioxidant properties and skin cell biocompatibility. The cross-linking of the nanofibers resulted in hydrophobic nanofiber surfaces; however, it impaired their biocompatibility with skin cells compared to noncross-linked nanofibers.

Temporal and statistical insights into multivariate time series forecasting of corn outlet moisture in industrial continuous-flow drying systems
Marko Simonič, Simon Klančnik, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Corn drying is a critical post-harvest process to ensure product quality and compliance with moisture standards. Traditional optimization approaches often overlook dynamic interactions between operational parameters and environmental factors in industrial continuous flow drying systems. This study integrates statistical analysis and deep learning to predict outlet moisture content, leveraging a dataset of 3826 observations from an operational dryer. The effects of inlet moisture, target air temperature, and material discharge interval on thermal behavior of the system were evaluated through linear regression and t-test, which provided interpretable insights into process dependencies. Three neural network architectures (LSTM, GRU, and TCN) were benchmarked for multivariate time-series forecasting of outlet corn moisture, with hyperparameters optimized using grid search to ensure fair performance comparison. Results demonstrated GRU’s superior performance in the context of absolute deviations, achieving the lowest mean absolute error (MAE = 0.304%) and competitive mean squared error (MSE = 0.304%), compared to LSTM (MAE = 0.368%, MSE = 0.291%) and TCN (MAE = 0.397%, MSE = 0.315%). While GRU excelled in average prediction accuracy, LSTM’s lower MSE highlighted its robustness against extreme deviations. The hybrid methodology bridges statistical insights for interpretability with deep learning’s dynamic predictive capabilities, offering a scalable framework for real-time process optimization. By combining traditional analytical methods (e.g., regression and t-test) with deep learning-driven forecasting, this work advances intelligent monitoring and control of industrial drying systems, enhancing process stability, ensuring compliance with moisture standards, and indirectly supporting energy efficiency by reducing over drying and enabling more consistent operation.

OpenHENS: an open-source tool for heat exchanger network synthesis
Keegan Keysers Hall, Andreja Nemet, Zdravko Kravanja, Timothy Gordon Walmsley, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The synthesis of heat exchanger networks (HENs) is an NP hard problem, made even more difficult by the requirement of commercial software licenses and coding ability. This paper introduces OpenHENS, a first-of-itskind open-source tool for HEN synthesis. In the literature, HEN synthesis based on mathematical programming almost exclusively relies on commercial MINLP (mixed-integer non-linear programming) solvers (e.g., BARON, Gurobi, etc.). Open source MINLP solvers, in contrast, lack the robustness, scalability and quality that are the hallmarks of commercial solvers. To overcome this challenge, OpenHENS embeds a novel three-step synthesis method that gradually increases the complexity of the model. The first two steps identify economically viable and thermodynamically feasible heat exchanger matches, removing the non-viable matches and reducing the problem size. In the third step, numerous HEN designs are obtained by evolving promising networks to obtain families of near-optimal solutions. OpenHENS was tested on thirteen benchmark problems and seven of the solutions were within 2 % of the total annualised cost (TAC) best-known solutions from literature. In eleven of the benchmark problems, OpenHENS returned more than 10 unique networks within 2 % of the best solution, enabling the engineer to select the most practical design with minimal cost difference. OpenHENS demonstrates that open-source software, when developed correctly, offers comparable performance to commercial software while promoting greater accessibility in industry.

Investigation of the influencing parameters of the ▫$H_2O_2-assisted$▫ photochemical treatment of waste liquid from the hydrothermal carbonization process in a microreactor flow system
Aleksandra Petrovič, Tjaša Cenčič, Silvo Hribernik, Andreja Nemet, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Due to its complex composition and toxicity, the waste liquid from hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) poses a serious environmental challenge that must be addressed before disposal. In this study, the photochemical treatment of HTC liquid in a microreactor flow system was investigated. The effects of wavelength, the presence of atmospheric oxygen, oxidizing agent (H2O2) and catalyst (FeSO4), residence time and pH on the efficiency of the photo-treatment were investigated. In addition, the influence of the addition of deep eutectic solvent (DES) on photo-treatment was studied. The results showed that the photochemical treatment was more efficient at 365 nm than at 420 nm, and that the acidic conditions gave better results than the basic ones. UV365 treatment in the presence of H2O2 (at a dosage of 1 vol%) resulted in removal efficiencies of 31.6% for COD, 17.6% for TOC, 16.9% for NH4-N and 17.2% for PO4-P. The addition of FeSO4 caused coagulation/flocculation effects, but improved phosphorus removal. The addition of DES resulted in slight discolouration of the liquid and proved unsuccessful in COD removal. The GC-MS analysis and 3D-EEM spectra showed significant changes in the fate of organics and in the fluorescence intensity of aromatic proteins and humic acid-like substances. Photochemical treatment in a microreactor flow system in the presence of H2O2 under the selected operating conditions reduced the content of organics and nutrients in the HTC liquid, but the process liquids still showed toxic effects on the organisms V. fischeri and Daphnia magna.
