3. Using a region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) for potato segmentation in a sorting processJaka Verk, Jernej Hernavs, Simon Klančnik, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This study focuses on the segmentation part in the development of a potato-sorting system that utilizes camera input for the segmentation and classification of potatoes. The key challenge addressed is the need for efficient segmentation to allow the sorter to handle a higher volume of potatoes simultaneously. To achieve this, the study employs a region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) approach for the segmentation task, while trying to achieve more precise segmentation than with classic CNN-based object detectors. Specifically, Mask R-CNN is implemented and evaluated based on its performance with different parameters in order to achieve the best segmentation results. The implementation and methodologies used are thoroughly detailed in this work. The findings reveal that Mask R-CNN models can be utilized in the production process of potato sorting and can improve the process. 4. Integrating participatory approaches and fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) for barrier analysis and ranking in urban mobility planningUroš Kramar, Marjan Sternad, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This study examines the barriers to implementing sustainable mobility strategies in small municipalities by integrating participatory and multi-criteria decision-making methods. A triangulated approach combines the nominal group technique (NGT), focus groups (FGs), and the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) to systematically identify, refine, and rank key barriers. The NGT enables stakeholders to list and prioritize barriers individually, ensuring balanced participation. FG discussions then refine and contextualize these barriers, addressing qualitative depth. Finally, the FAHP quantitatively ranks the barriers while accounting for uncertainty in stakeholder judgments. The results highlight systemic constraints, such as financial limitations and regulatory inefficiencies, alongside local challenges like inadequate infrastructure and public resistance. Integrating the NGT, FGs, and the FAHP enhances the analytical rigor by merging structured decision-making with participatory engagement. This methodological innovation strengthens the reliability of barrier assessment and offers a replicable framework for urban mobility planning. The findings underscore the need for locally tailored strategies that balance stakeholder inclusion with structured prioritization, contributing to improved governance in sustainable transport planning. 5. When technology meets sustainability: microplastic removal from industrial wastewater, including impact analysis and life cycle assessmentJan Puhar, Michael Toni Sturm, Erika Myers, Dennis Schober, Anika Korzin, Annamaria Vujanović, Katrin Schuhen, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Microplastics (MPs) that are ubiquitous in aquatic environments and industrial wastewater streams have been identified as key hotspots of MP contamination. It is significantly more effective to remove MPs at these points before they enter municipal wastewater streams. This study is an environmental assessment of a novel pilot plant for the removal of MPs and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) from wastewater with a high MP contamination from a plastics manufacturer in Germany. MP removal is based on physical–chemical agglomeration–fixation by organosilanes. Formed agglomerates are separated using a belt filter. The COD is removed by an adsorption process. The resulting MP removal was 98.0 ± 1.1% by mass and 99.9987 ± 0.0007% by particle count, while the COD was reduced by 96 ± 2.7%. The system’s sustainability is evaluated using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology, evaluating system construction, operation, and end-of-life considerations. The current pilot plant is also compared to an optimized circular and sustainable upgrade, where drivers of environmental burdens are eliminated and collected MPs are reused. Significant reductions in environmental impact categories are achieved and the global warming potential is reduced by 96%. This study provides a sustainability assessment of a novel technology and circular solution to remove MPs from highly polluted industrial wastewater. 6. Simulation-based algorithm for continuous improvement of enterprises performanceJ. Pervaz, Nemanja Sremčev, Branislav Stevanov, Leo Gusel, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The printing company’s process performance depends on the possibility of providing requested products and managing the existing constraints of fixed machine layouts and high setup times between different products. Process inefficiencies caused by these factors reflect on throughput, production times, and resource utilization. The changes that improve one part of the production system usually affect other parts, needing additional optimization, and it is very useful to test the feasibility of proposed solutions with simulation before implementation. This paper presents a new algorithm for continuous improvement of enterprises performance, combining the lean approach with cellular manufacturing, and simulation. The performance is observed in a way that a certain setup influences the system in its entirety, rather than on a specific part of that system. The results are presented through models developed within the production optimization phase, representing various ways in which the continuous improvement algorithm can unfold. Each of them comes with its advantages and disadvantages, all intending to create more efficient production processes that generate less production waste. 7. Valorization of biomass through anaerobic digestion and hydrothermal carbonization : integrated process flowsheet and supply chain network optimizationSanja Potrč, Aleksandra Petrovič, Jafaru Musa Egieya, Lidija Čuček, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Utilization of biomass through anaerobic digestion and hydrothermal carbonization is crucial to maximize resource efficiency. At the same time, supply chain integration ensures sustainable feedstock management and minimizes environmental and logistical impacts, enabling a holistic approach to a circular bioeconomy. This study presents an integrated approach to simultaneously optimize the biomass supply chain network and process flowsheet, which includes anaerobic digestion, cogeneration, and hydrothermal carbonization. A three-layer supply chain network superstructure was hence developed to integrate the optimization of process variables with supply chain features such as transportation modes, feedstock supply, plant location, and demand location. A mixed-integer nonlinear programming model aimed at maximizing the economic performance of the system was formulated and applied to a case study of selected regions in Slovenia. The results show a great potential for the utilization of organic biomass with an annual after tax profit of 23.13 million USD per year, with the production of 245.70 GWh/yr of electricity, 298.83 GWh/yr of heat, and 185.08 kt/yr of hydrochar. The optimal configuration of the supply chain network, including the selection of supply zones, plant locations and demand locations, transportation links, and mode of transportation is presented, along with the optimal process variables within the plant. 9. Digital transformation reduces costs of the paints and coatings development processTomaž Kern, Eva Krhač Andrašec, Benjamin Urh, Marjan Senegačnik, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: An essential characteristic of the new product development process is to develop a new marketable product in the shortest possible time with the lowest reasonable costs. Therefore, the key factor of the process is efficiency. The paints and coatings industry development process contain numerous laboratory tests to determine the appropriateness of new formulation. It is proven that digital transformation can reduce the number of laboratory tests and consequently shorten the throughput time of the development process. This raised the question of whether the faster development process also reduces the process’ cost, or they even increase due to information and communication technology implementation. Therefore, the research’s purpose was to determine whether reducing the number of laboratory tests, based on the implementation of information and communication technology (ICT), affects reducing costs in the paints and coatings development process. The conventional process and the redesigned process of paints and coatings development were used as the basis of the research. The comparative analysis of the costs incurred during the development process was made. The analysis compares the types and amount of incurred costs. The article proves that digital transformation has a significant impact on up to 48% on reducing costs of the paints and coatings development process. 10. Emotional intelligence of engineering students as basis for more successful learning process for Industry 4.0Slavica Mitrović Veljković, Ana Nešić, Branislav Dudić, Michal Gregus, Milan Delić, Maja Meško, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The purpose of this paper is creating analyses for understanding the personality characteristics related to emotional intelligence and how can this define the development program of personal characteristics in the processes of education for Industry 4.0. The main research goal is to measure dimensions of emotional intelligence in the student population based on a quantitative survey (Emotional Competence Inventory) through dimensions of emotional intelligence: self-regulation, self-awareness, and attitude towards changes. Since the student population was the research target, a group of 338 engineering students was selected. The group was characterized by highly diversified geographic origin, having previously completed school and achieved success. The results show that there are statistically significant differences between all three dimensions of emotional intelligence. Namely, self-regulation and attitude towards changes (both directly and indirectly through self-regulation) are positively affected by self-awareness, while attitude towards changes is positively affected by self-regulation. Developing student emotional potential is one of the most important actuators of business for Industry 4.0, especially in countries with low educational attainment and low social and economic indicators.
