The psychodynamic processes related to the involvement in peacekeeping missions

Opis: Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to review the decade of Slovenian police officer’s experiences with international peacekeeping operations. The main goal of police officers, involved in these missions, is to prevent conflicts between opposite sites, to implement basic agreements, protect humanitarian missions and reinforce policing operations in the conflict area. The purpose of the paper is to acknowledge the lessons learned while planning and implementing further cooperation of Slovenian police officers in peacekeeping (police) operations. The main purpose of the paper is to analyze the consequences of deployment to peacekeeping missions for police officers as well as their family members (partners and children) by analyzing the psychodynamic processes related to the involvement in peacekeeping missions. Design/Methods/Approach: The paper is based on the review of literature. The empirical part of the paper presents the results of the research on a small sample of police officers (n = 36) and their family members (n = 25 partners + 35 children). Findings: Police peacekeepers should be well prepared for different stress situations; they are exposed to various stress factors before, during, and after serving in a mission. That is why training and reintegration programmes are of great importance. We establish that respondents assess that deployment to a peacekeeping mission has a positive and negative impact on the relationships between family members. As many as ¾ of mission members believe deployment can have a positive impact above all in the sense of strengthening the emotional ties between partners, increased mutual trust and strengthening of the partnership. For them, deployment to a peacekeeping mission is a challenge and personal experience, which can change the way they see the world. 2/3 of partners state similar positive impacts and they also believe that there is more trust between the partners after the experience with the peacekeeping mission, they treasure their time together and thus represent bigger support for each other in difficult times. As the most common problem, respondents perceived marital problems and the occurrence of negative feelings among family members (anger, avoidance, judgment ...). A large share of respondents stressed problems with children. 43.8% of respondents also named depression as a problem. Research limitations/implications: The findings are limited to the Slovenian police and their police officer’s experiences, serving in various police peacekeeping missions and their family members. Practical implications: Based on lessons learned this paper complements the results of different surveys of the researched topic. The results cannot be completely generalized, although some findings could also be useful to similar police organizations in Europe. Originality/Value: This paper addresses and explores different small scale surveys, conducted on sampled Slovenian police officers who served in peacekeeping missions and their family members. Findings could be of interest for the general as well as expert audience.

Preparing students for mobility in vocational education and training

Opis: The following master’s thesis focuses on preparing students on mobility in vocational education and training. The focus lies on English for specific purposes which is an integral part of English in technical secondary and vocational technical education. The thesis also concentrates on exchange programmes and their effects on students’ L2 and communicative competences. The above-mentioned educational programmes have to focus on both general English as well as English for specific purposes because the students need the knowledge at school, during the vocational training and later at work. The EU helps promoting language diversity by financing various international mobility programmes. The following MA thesis focuses on Erasmus+ which supports education and training at all levels and helps the schools send vocational education and training learners abroad. As proven by various studies, mobility has a beneficial effect on students’ English and communication skills. The case study included seven students attending upper-secondary programmes at the school centre Škofja Loka. The purpose of the study was to analyse the influence of the students’ vocational training abroad on their foreign language competences and to see whether students’ communicative competences improved during the vocational training abroad. The results were used to prepare helpful language exercises for future Erasmus+ students. According to students’ answers, a four-week exchange period is long enough for both weaker as well as more advanced students to make progress in English. All of them also confirmed that the most used language skills during the mobility were speaking and listening. For that reason, the practical part of the MA thesis presents four examples of exercises focusing on woodworking vocabulary, listening and speaking.

Web graphic organizers as an advanced strategy for teaching science textbook reading comprehension

Opis: This paper presents the results of the 5 months experiment in which the influence of using a web graphic organizer in the science literacy curriculum was observed. The interest of the study was focused on the quality and quantity of learning/understanding the explicatory text description from the science textbook. The experiment included students at the age of 8-9 years. Science and L1 class were integrated for this purpose: teachers were instructed to use web graphic organizer as a tool for visualizing the text structure on the level of concrete cognitive operations. The results show the effect of using the web graphic organizer on students' competence to find out what in the science textbook text is important, on the level of text comprehension and on the competence of comparing new information with the previous knowledge.

The effectiveness of distanced e-learning in teachers' education

Opis: In the last two decades a remarkable shift from conventional forms of teaching toward e-learning happened on all levels of education. This shift included also teachers’ permanent, lifelong education. The purpose of the study was to find and compare the effectiveness of conventional workshop and an e-learning module in teachers’ lifelong/permanent professional training. A study included 30 mother tongue teachers. The aim of the teachers training course curriculum was focused in their competence for developing students’/reader’s reception metacognition (RRM), a competence which is a prerequisite for differentiation/individualization in the process of implementation of literature curriculum in the frame of mother tongue education. Pre-intervention and post-intervention teaching practice of both groups of teachers were observed and compared to find out, which form of lifelong education influenced participants’ teaching practice in a more effective way. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of data, gained in e-module and compared with those, gained in the traditional workshop education, shows a significantly bigger effect of education on the case study participants teaching practice for the group of teachers, which participated in traditional educational form – a workshop.

Didactics and communications criterion of distance education

Opis: Last decade's technological development in the field of information technology has boosted the range of varieties of its use in the distance education and given new dimensions to this type of education. Distance learning nowadays is practised by several theory's, each differing from the other in its formal access, in the analyse of its teaching and learning materials, in its ways and range of counselling and the range of its communication with the participants, as well as in its didactic concept of preparing and forming learning materials, etc. Distance education is important criterion for new communication trends in education. Therefore it shall be covered more thoroughly in this work.

Children's literature, teachers and integrative education

Opis: The paper represents the results of a quantitative research performed at the Faculty of Education, University of Maribor. The aim of the project was to establish the implementation of the concept of integrative education, which was recommended for the first triennium of elementary education in Slovenia in the 90s. The essence of Slovene integration concept should be the following: focusing on the structure and the process of child's assimilation as well as accommodation in/of the structure, his/her ability to communicate the content of the structure and his/her ability to express the process of changing the structure. Our results show that the majority of teachers follow the recommended curriculum guidelines for integration as the main didactical concept for teaching in the first triennium of elementary school taught as a part of the compulsory Teacher training program - teaching in the first triennium. Nevertheless a big proportion of elementary school teachers (year 1-3) are not entirely aware of the criteria that should be used for integration in the educational process. The same elementary school teachers have difficulties (aware or unaware) with the process of planning and performing the integration concept in the classroom.

On-the-job training and human resource management

Opis: Background: In this paper, the effects of four groups of factors on organizational performance are examined. Those are human resource management (HRM) policies and practices, financial and business indicators, location, and firm characteristics. A review of selected literature confirmed that a similar set of factors, through its positive effects on boosting organizational performance, may significantly improve competitive advantage of firms. Methods: An empirical analysis using firm-level data is conducted on the sample of enterprises operating in Serbia. A microeconometric approach is employed in order to specify and estimate empirical models. Two statistical models are applied. The ordered probit model is used for investigating organizational performance and the standard binary probit model for examining the decision of a firm to integrate the human resource development (HRD) department into its organizational structure. The goodness of fit measures confirmed the statistical reliability of estimated models. Results: Estimation results revealed that optimization of the number of employees, sales and revenues, firm age, increased market demand and competitive environment, as well as the ‘right decisions’ of the top management have significantly positive effects on boosting organizational performance. Significance of on-the-job training for boosting organizational performance was not empirically supported. In the same group of factors are firm size, industry and region. An auxiliary model shown that large- and medium-sized firms, firms with high level of revenues, privately owned, foreign and those located in or near to the capital city are more likely to have HRD departments. Conclusions: This paper provides a survey of the theoretical literature and explains empirical findings that are relevant for understanding to what extent on-the-job training, managing human resource, as well as some other internal and external organizational and financial factors are important for enhancing competitive advantage of firms.

Competency based training need assessment

Opis: Training is a usual formula for organisations through which employees are introduced to learning, but the challenge lies in identifying the appropriate training needs of employees. The success of a training program depends primarily on the need assessment. The paper discusses the process of competency mapping and focuses on how competency mapping can be used for conducting training need assessment. The paper is an empirical research based on both public and private manufacturing units in India. Primary and secondary data was collected using number of techniques. Gap analysis has been performed for employees and it has also been aimed to verify the changes in competency gaps on applying need based training. On providing need based training, significant difference was measured in the level of competencies of employees. The paper shares a practical insight on the implementation of competency mapping for training need analysis. The research is focused on manufacturing units only, whereas there is a huge scope for it to be implemented in service industries also. The paper is an original piece of research where a model has been designed to resolve training issues of manufacturing industries.

Training on sustainable use of water in the processing industry

Opis: The aim of this article is to present research results on the influence of factors of sustainable water use training (management support of training, co-worker support of training, incentives for using skills acquired during training) and the influence of this training on technical efficiency and employee efficiency. The article is based on an empirical study of 328 medium and large companies in the Slovene processing industry. The findings show that the training factors have a statistically significant and positive effect on sustainable water use training and that training has a positive effect on technical efficiency. They also offer new theoretical knowledge as well as practical guidelines for anyone working in the sustainable development management of natural resources.

Nonprofit organizations from the perspective of organizational development and their influence on professionalization

Opis: The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the phenomenon of professionalization that is observable in organizations from the nonprofit sector. Empirical research was conducted among Hungarian nonprofit organizations, and the data were collected within the framework of a country-wide survey. Through the analysis of the research results, the paper provides deeper insights into knowledge about professionalization trends in the nonprofit sector. It proves that organizational development positively impacts nonprofit organizations’ improvement of their professionalization level and the members of these organizations.
