The impact of cross-border tourism in Ulcinj : a study of tourism development between Montenegro and Albania : a study of tourism development between Montenegro and Albania
Ajla Bajramspahić, 2025, diplomsko delo

Opis: This thesis investigates how Ulcinj's growth within the Montenegro–Albania corridor is influenced by cross-border tourism. First, a theoretical analysis demonstrated the connections between demand for tourism, employment, and investment; the significance of cooperation and governance; the interdependence of tourism and mobility; and the consequences of seasonality and sustainability. Next, we interviewed emergency services, public administration, local politicians, and business sector stakeholders in lodging and hospitality. The results show distinct advantages for turnover, employment, and small-scale investment, but they also show enduring drawbacks, such as poor public transportation and car-free accessibility, border lines and procedural unpredictability, disjointed governance, irregular electronic payments and taxi rates, noticeable summer peaks, and peak-season strain on municipal services. Targeted last-mile infrastructure improvements planned off-season events, operational mayor/DMO collaboration, direct cross-border public transportation links with basic one-stop/digital facilitation, and harmonized coastal standards were all recommendations made by interviewees. In order to establish a more stable, higher-value, year-round destination system, the thesis concludes by highlighting the necessity of strengthening operational environmental management, integrating mobility and border facilitation, improving governance coordination, and packaging and jointly marketing cross-border products.

Health tourism : study material for students
Milica Rančić Demir, 2025, drugo učno gradivo

Opis: The study material provides a comprehensive overview of health tourism as an important and rapidly developing segment of the tourism industry. It begins with a historical perspective, from ancient civilizations and pilgrimages to the democratization of spa culture, the rise of medical tourism, and today’s integrated approaches to health and wellness. The text defines key concepts such as health, illness, quality of life, happiness, well-being, and wellness, introducing models like the Wellness Wheel and PERMA. A central part of the material examines the relationship between well-being and tourism, highlighting how travel contributes to physical, psychological, and social health. Different types of health tourism are presented, particularly the distinction between medical and wellness tourism, supported by comparative models. Detailed chapters cover spas, wellness centres in hospitality, hot springs, and natural therapeutic waters, outlining their definitions, typologies, benefits, and contemporary applications. The material also discusses market segmentation in wellness tourism, identifying motives and profiles of tourists, as well as management aspects, including customer experience, site-level management, and broader geographical considerations. Special emphasis is given to stakeholder structures and their interactions, which shape the functioning of health tourism systems. Trends such as sustainability, digitalization, personalization, and the impact of COVID-19 are analysed as forces transforming the sector. A separate focus is given to health tourism in Slovenia, its natural healing factors, spas, and the role of the Slovenian Spas Association. Altogether, the material combines theory, history, practical examples, and future trends, offering students an in-depth but structured introduction to health and wellness tourism.

Romina Alkier Radnić, Vedran Milojica, Vasja Roblek, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The paper includes an exploratory qualitative research study on the impact and consequences of Covid-19 on business and organisational changes in the hotel industry in the Opatija Riviera area, which will have a medium- and long-term impact on the design of resilience and sustainable growth policies. The disruption caused by the pandemic is also important for hotel managers and management from the point of view of introducing crisis management processes, the results of which can be seen in the protection of the well-being of guests, employees and the general reputation of hotels. Therefore, hotel management needs to emphasise the importance of identifying business strategies and practices in business strategies and thus form the basis for effective crisis management.

Navigational regime issues on the Soča river compared to the Douro river in Portugal: Challenges of tourism and environmental protection
Matevž Poklukar, 2025, magistrsko delo

Opis: This thesis examines the economic, environmental and governance challenges of river tourism, focusing on the Soča river in Slovenia and the Douro river in Portugal. The study aims to analyse how sustainable tourism management strategies can be optimised to balance environmental conservation and economic benefits in river-based tourism. To achieve this, we employ a comparative case study approach, combining survey data from local stakeholders in the Soča Valley and extensive literature of tourism policies and environmental regulations. Findings reveal that the Douro river benefits from a structured governance model, effectively integrating tourism with conservation and agriculture. On the other hand, the Soča river faces fragmented policies, environmental degradation, and seasonal overcrowding, leading to economic volatility and stakeholder dissatisfaction. The study identifies key areas for policy improvement, including the introduction of a unified navigation authority, increased reinvestment in conservation, a tiered permit system differentiating between kayaking and rafting and infrastructure improvements. Additionally, case studies on the Zambezi river and Little Yampa Canyon demonstrate the benefits of controlled permit systems and reinvestment models. The research concludes that effective governance is crucial for achieving sustainable river tourism. By adopting structured management strategies, the Soča Valley could enhance economic resilience while mitigating environmental risks. The findings offer practical recommendations for tourism operators, local stakeholders and policymakers, providing a framework for balancing long-term sustainability with tourism growth.

The study addresses gaps in understanding the comprehensive implementation of digital technologies in tourism. Research methodology –The research employed a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews with eight tourism industry experts holding positions as hotel managers, sales and reservations managers, and marketing managers. Data was collected in January 2025 and analysed using thematic coding based on the theoretical framework. Findings –reveal that digitalisation significantly enhances operational efficiency, enables precise audience targeting, facilitates personalised customer communication, and improves strategic decision-making through data analytics. While social media and online booking platforms are widely adopted, advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) face implementation barriers due to cost constraints and knowledge gaps.

Opis: The purpose of the study is to examinewhether two differentwork commitment profiles influence service quality in the hospitality sector in Slovenia and Serbia and how the implications of the differences can be used in the tourism and hospitality industry. Combining a qualitative and quantitative approach, two new instruments were developed for this study. The first instrumentwas created on the basis of short, structured interviews with employees. Two factors explaining the two different commitment profiles were determined with statistical analysis and with themethod of clustering, four dimensions of commitment profiles formingwere extracted. The second instrument was developed on the basis of existing evaluation forms for employees in the tourism industry and interviews with leading and middle managers of hotels. The findings of the study show that there is a small proportion of professionallyoriented employees in the tourism sector, and the difference among employees is evident in the ranking of working values. These results could be useful formanagers in planning and organising their human resources and also in planning further development of their companies% human resource policies. Integration as a tool of destination management : the case of rural and rural fringe areas
Emil Juvan, Rok Ovsenik, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: It is well known that the organizational structure of the Slovenian tourism industry is changing. Tourist companies are merging, but unfortunately only a few companies empowered their capital structure and market position, so in a way we can talk about an oligopoly. The situation does not favor rural and rural fringe areas, where an underdeveloped tourism economy cannot represent a solid source of income for many tourist farms and other tourist companies. Integration is a scientifically and professionally proven method for empowering businesses. Integrative destination management, which provides the tool for tourist destinations development, aims at sustainable tourism where the community collectively develops and runs the tourism economy. This paper examines the possibilities for the development of business integration as a basis for the successful implementation of destination management in the Mislinja Valley. A survey has been conducted, where two thirds of the tourist companies in the area were investigated in relation to the destination management and tourism opportunities in the area. Analysis shows that the business environment accepts the idea of integration as a tool for empowering the regional tourism industry, however only interest integration appeares to be acceptable at this time.
