A cloud-based system for the optical monitoring of tool conditions during milling through the detection of chip surface size and identification of cutting force trends
Uroš Župerl, Krzysztof Stępień, Goran Munđar, Miha Kovačič, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This article presents a cloud-based system for the on-line monitoring of tool conditions in end milling. The novelty of this research is the developed system that connects the IoT (Internet of Things) platform for the monitoring of tool conditions in the cloud to the machine tool and optical system for the detection of cutting chip size. The optical system takes care of the acquisition and transfer of signals regarding chip size to the IoT application, where they are used as an indicator for the determination of tool conditions. In addition, the novelty of the presented approach is in the artificial intelligence integrated into the platform, which monitors a tool’s condition through identification of the current cutting force trend and protects the tool against excessive loading by correcting process parameters. The practical significance of the research is that it is a new system for fast tool condition monitoring, which ensures savings, reduces investment costs due to the use of a more cost-effective sensor, improves machining efficiency and allows remote process monitoring on mobile devices. A machining test was performed to verify the feasibility of the monitoring system. The results show that the developed system with an ANN (artificial neural network) for the recognition of cutting force patterns successfully detects tool damage and stops the process within 35 ms. This article reports a classification accuracy of 85.3% using an ANN with no error in the identification of tool breakage, which verifies the effectiveness and practicality of the approach.

Can large-language models replace humans in agile effort estimation? Lessons from a controlled experiment
Luka Pavlič, Vasilka Saklamaeva, Tina Beranič, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Effort estimation is critical in software engineering to assess the resources needed for development tasks and to enable realistic commitments in agile iterations. This study investigates whether generative AI tools, which are transforming various aspects of software development, can improve effort estimation efficiency. A controlled experiment was conducted in which development teams upgraded an existing information system, with the experimental group using the generative-AI-based tool GitLab Duo for estimation and the control group using conventional methods (e.g., planning poker or analogy-based planning). Results show that while generative-AI-based estimation tools achieved only 16% accuracy—currently insufficient for industry standards—they offered valuable support for task breakdown and iteration planning. Participants noted that a combination of conventional methods and AI-based tools could offer enhanced accuracy and efficiency in future planning.

Vojislav Ivetić, Špela Martinjak, Alem Maksuti, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: ntroduction Primary care physicians use various tools and methods to identify medically unexplained symptoms (MUS). The main purpose of our study is to determine the views of Slovenian family medicine trainees (FMT) about using the “Careful Assessment” tool for managing patients with MUS. Methods A qualitative study using open survey questions focused on the experience of family medicine trainees in managing patients with MUS. The sample consisted of surveys from 184 family medicine trainees. These trainees analysed a total of 702 patients with MUS. Manual coding was used for quantitative content analysis. Results In the coding process, 49 codes were developed that included broader research fields about using the “Careful Assessment” tool for managing patients with MUS. The codes were grouped into four theoretically grounded, logical categories in accordance with the elaborated theoretical concept: multi-purpose utility; improved patient management; in-depth knowledge and new skills; and patient response. Conclusion The study demonstrated that, in the view of Slovenian FMT, the “Careful Assessment” tool has multi-purpose utility. The study showed that FMT felt that this tool helps them in systematic patient management. Their opinion is that it helps them establish a trusting relationship with patients, which is a precondition for providing further treatment.

Tool condition monitoring using machine tool spindle current and long short-term memory neural network model analysis
Niko Turšič, Simon Klančnik, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In cutting processes, tool condition affects the quality of the manufactured parts. As such, an essential component to prevent unplanned downtime and to assure machining quality is having information about the state of the cutting tool. The primary function of it is to alert the operator that the tool has reached or is reaching a level of wear beyond which behaviour is unreliable. In this paper, the tool condition is being monitored by analysing the electric current on the main spindle via an artificial intelligence model utilising an LSTM neural network. In the current study, the tool is monitored while working on a cylindrical raw piece made of AA6013 aluminium alloy with a custom polycrystalline diamond tool for the purposes of monitoring the wear of these tools. Spindle current characteristics were obtained using external measuring equipment to not influence the operation of the machine included in a larger production line. As a novel approach, an artificial intelligence model based on an LSTM neural network is utilised for the analysis of the spindle current obtained during a manufacturing cycle and assessing the tool wear range in real time. The neural network was designed and trained to notice significant characteristics of the captured current signal. The conducted research serves as a proof of concept for the use of an LSTM neural network-based model as a method of monitoring the condition of cutting tools.

CSR EMAT is an opportunity for responsible decision-making
Nora Berkes Rodek, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Corporate social responsibility is an expected behaviour in Western countries, but the approach still does not have a clear interpretation in Hungary. As a result of the increasing prestige of the CSR approach, socially responsible thinking and action also are expected from the companies operating in Hungary. Company executives carry out CSR activities in many cases – but not consciously. The objective of this research therefore was the development of a guidance and evaluation criteria that can support managers in responsible decision-making and applying the CSR approach to a strategic level. On the other hand, this management tool allows the measurement of CSR excellence in companies; therefore, they become comparable in their CSR performance, which offers opportunities for further research. The study presents the development of CSR EMAT and the results achieved through the measurements.

Estimating truck operating costs for domestic trips : case studies from Greece
Eleftherios Sdoukopoulos, Maria Boile, Afroditi Anagnostopoulou, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The transport sector represents a vital component of national economies and has significant impacts on productivity and social welfare. In 2012, the transport sector in Europe was estimated to account for 3.7% of the European Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 5.1% for employment. Road transport proves to be the predominant mode for moving goods within Europe holding a share of approximately 45.8% in 2012 (in ton-kms). In Greece, the share of road freight transport is significantly higher (98%) indicating the importance of this sector for the Greek economy. To this end and considering the existing needs of road freight transport operators in Greece, the objective of this research is to establish an analytical and documented basis for estimating the operating cost of a truck on specific urban or national freight transport routes. To achieve this goal, an extended literature review has been conducted resulting in the identification of the main components comprising the total truck operating cost, which were then updated and validated through a series of personal interviews with selected road freight transport professionals. An excel-based application tool was also developed in order to facilitate operating cost estimates for different cases, through selection of the proper values of the relevant parameters. The resulting tool was used to analyse four test cases, which demonstrate the tool’s usability and applicability. Results from this analysis have been also validated by industry experts and they reflect real-world transport scenarios.

The development of spatial representation in the world of new media
Bea Tomšič Amon, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: With the development of spatial perceptions being one of the most important goals of visual art education, we analysed the influence of different didactic tools – dynamic or static in the development of pupils’ spatial perception. After an initial testing, we formed groups considering three different levels in their abilities to represent spatial organizations. In experimental groups pupils were introduced with the contents of the lesson using moving images while in control groups we used static images. Pupils had to make a drawing using the cues to represent space. While pupils from the advanced level did not show differences, in the second group they showed more detailed drawings in the case of the use of dynamic didactic means. Among the less talented pupils, the results showed a difference: improvement in the case of static images while dynamic images produced a kind of insecurity that did not allow the free development of pupils’ expression. We concluded that it is important to use the adequate didactic tools taking into account the goals we wish to achieve: dynamic images foster a unique experience of space but they can create insecurity and negative feelings in pupils that find it difficult to express themselves in terms of two dimensional representations of space.

Web based education tool for neural network robot control
Jure Čas, Darko Hercog, Riko Šafarič, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper describes the application for teleoperations of the SCARA robot via the internet. The SCARA robot is used by students of mehatronics at the University of Maribor as a remote educational tool. The developed software consists of two parts i.e. the continuous neural network sliding mode controller (CNNSMC) and the graphical user interface (GUI). Application is based on two well-known commercially available software packages i.e. MATLAB/Simulink and LabVIEW. Matlab/Simulink and the DSP2 Library for Simulink are used for control algorithm development, simulation and executable code generation. While this code is executing on the DSP-2 Roby controller and through the analog and digital I/O lines drives the real process, LabVIEW virtual instrument (VI), running on the PC, is used as a user front end. LabVIEW VI provides the ability for on-line parameter tuning, signal monitoring, on-line analysis and via Remote Panels technology also teleoperation. The main advantage of a CNNSMC is the exploitation of its self-learning capability. When friction or an unexpected impediment occurs for example, the user of a remote application has no information about any changed robot dynamic and thus is unable to dispatch it manually. This is not a control problem anymore because, when a CNNSMC is used, any approximation of changed robot dynamic is estimated independently of the remote's user.
