1. Genre and Multimodality in Primary School EFL Textbooks : master's thesisSara Škerget, 2023, magistrsko delo Opis: The master's thesis examines the features of textual and visual material included in primary school EFL textbooks. The genre theory according to the Sydney School is introduced in the theoretical part. The features of authentic and simplified texts are also presented. The principles of discourse and multimodal analysis, which served as a basis for our analysis, are outlined. The analysis includes twenty texts with the accompanying visual material selected from the Messages (EFL) textbooks for lower-secondary students aged 11 to 14 years created by English authors Diana Goodey and Noel Goodey in cooperation with others. The study presented in this thesis focuses on the analysis of selected texts from these textbooks with regard to three dimensions of register: field, i.e., the entities, objects, concepts, and activities represented in the texts and their accompanying images; tone, i.e., the formality or informality of texts and images; and mode, i.e., the dependence of texts and images on the context. The study also examines the prevailing genres and text-image relations in the analysed material. 2. Spolni stereotipi v učbenikih angleščine: primerjava dveh izdaj serije učbenikov messages : master's thesisVeronika Mešić, 2022, magistrsko delo Opis: The Master’s Thesis focuses on gender stereotypes in English language coursebooks with special emphasis on the comparison between two editions of the coursebook series Messages. The analysis of coursebook series consists of descriptive, qualitative, and quantitative analysis of gender stereotypes in the linguistic (text) and visual (photographs, illustrations) forms. The Master’s Thesis classifies gender stereotypes as those instances in which women and men are portrayed stereotypically e. g. in their profession, through physical appearance, assumed binary traits etc. The found stereotypes are represented descriptively and statistically. Both editions of the coursebook series Messages are compared in terms of gender stereotypes in them. The findings of the study show an increase in gender stereotypes in the visual imagery between the two editions, unequal male to female characters ratio, and underrepresentation of women in occupational roles and activities. 3. Representation of gender through visual imagery in primary school English textbooks from Slovene and English publishers : master's thesisElin Kamenšek Krajnc, 2022, magistrsko delo Opis: Textbooks are the foundation for teaching. Even though the use of interactive online materials is increasing, most teachers base their lessons on printed materials, most frequently textbooks, since these offer well-structured, organized and ready-made materials. However, textbooks also include cultural beliefs and values that impact children’s perception of the world and themselves. This thesis focuses on how textbooks present gender through visual imagery and what message they deliver to developing young individuals that rely on school and textbooks to provide models they can follow. The research is based on a comparison of 8 textbooks – Slovene publisher’s textbooks and those published by English publishing houses – concerning their use of stereotypical and sexist illustrations. We provide a theoretical background to the problem and highlight the importance of school and textbooks for forming gender identity. The empirical part of the thesis offers a descriptive analysis supported by feature coding and shows whether the attempts to eliminate gender differences in the classroom have been successful. 4. Teaching Culture Through English in Slovenian Primary and Secondary Schools: An Analysis of the Intercultural Element in TextbooksEva Hršak, 2019, magistrsko delo Opis: Our thesis begins by discussing the concept of culture. Next, it considers the importance of incorporating culture into foreign language teaching and developing intercultural communicative competence. We have discovered that culture is an inevitable part of our everyday lives. It shapes our identities and helps in explaining our actions. Therefore, being unaware of the characteristics of other cultures may result in misunderstandings. As teachers, we must be aware of the importance of culture and should be able to familiarize our learners with its elements. By incorporating elements of culture into lessons, our learners will not only become competent English speakers, but will also know how to appropriately and effectively adjust to a variety of situations, and how to maintain and establish personal relationships. In the empirical section of the thesis, we have studied primary and secondary school English teachers’ views on teaching culture. The results showed that the teachers are aware of the importance of culture teaching since all the participants include various cultural elements into their English lessons. In addition, we have analysed the eight most frequently used English textbooks the teachers use in Slovenia in terms of the cultural elements they contain. We have decided to analyse textbooks as the main resource for teaching culture since textbooks are an indispensable and also a mandatory resource for every English teacher. The analysis showed that the textbooks contain a variety of cultural elements and are taught with the help of multiple strategies. 5. Web graphic organizers as an advanced strategy for teaching science textbook reading comprehensionMarija Ropič Kop, Metka Kordigel Aberšek, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This paper presents the results of the 5 months experiment in which the influence of using a web graphic organizer in the science literacy curriculum was observed. The interest of the study was focused on the quality and quantity of learning/understanding the explicatory text description from the science textbook. The experiment included students at the age of 8-9 years. Science and L1 class were integrated for this purpose: teachers were instructed to use web graphic organizer as a tool for visualizing the text structure on the level of concrete cognitive operations. The results show the effect of using the web graphic organizer on students' competence to find out what in the science textbook text is important, on the level of text comprehension and on the competence of comparing new information with the previous knowledge. 6. The challenges of complete informatization of educationMagdalena Šverc, Igor Pesek, Andrej Flogie, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Since the methods of teaching and learning are currently changing, Slovenian society is challenged to respond. Ministries responsible for the development of the educational system encourage informatization of education by launching strategically oriented tenders. This research presents three such projects, which together propose guidelines on how to further develop the Slovenian educational system with an emphasis on the introduction of information and communication technologies into everyday life in Slovenian schools at all levels (teaching, learning, management, etc.). There are three main areas that are covered: (1) technical assistance and support, (2) development and deployment of e-learning materials and e-textbooks and (3) teacher training. Using these approaches it would be possible to achieve an increase in digital competences and a change in our pedagogical paradigm. Results show a better motivation, communication and improved teamwork among students. This is a consequence of changes in the way of thinking and teaching by both teachers and other school participants, especially the headmasters who put the student in the centre of activities. The whole process of school informatization depends on a coherent development of various fields. The focus is on a change of pedagogical paradigm and the consequential teacher and managerial staff training. Recently, the proposed introduction of electronic textbooks (e-textbooks) has become a major topic nationwide in Slovenia. There are multiple dilemmas to be solved, e.g. what a modern e-textbook is, what it should include, in what way should it differ from conventional textbooks, what tools and technologies should be used for its creation, etc. This paper attempts to make recommendations, which we believe should be followed by all the authors of e-textbooks. 8. Comparison of the Methods Used for Expanding Vocabulary in ELT TextbooksSandra Ažman, 2016, magistrsko delo Opis: The aim of this master’s thesis was to research the emphasis that is given on assimilating new vocabulary in the chosen textbooks, which were approved by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport and are currently being used to teach/learn English as a foreign language in the ninth grade of primary schools.
In the theoretical part the focus has been given on different methods for learning or teaching new vocabulary, the appropriate amount of new vocabulary regarding the level of students’ language competences, the effect of methodology on vocabulary learning and communication, the role of repeating and refreshing of new vocabulary and the role of a textbook in foreign language learning.
The empirical part of the thesis includes two separate analyses of the questionnaire conducted among ninth grade students and teachers of English as a foreign language in the ninth grade of primary school. 48 students and 73 teachers participated in the research. With the help of these analyses we tried to establish whether the texts in the chosen textbooks are authentic enough to enhance automatic learning of vocabulary, whether the method for expanding vocabulary, which was named as the most successful in the theory, is also used in the textbooks that were analyzed and whether the textbooks include sufficient exercises to assimilate and refresh new vocabulary.
The research showed that the texts in the coursebooks are at least nearly authentic pieces of language according to students and teachers of English as a foreign language. However, slight adaptations of the texts are possible and also approved by the researches. One of the most successful methods for expanding vocabulary is, according to literature, reading. The analysis has also proven it in practice, since teachers named it as the most successful one. The results of the analysis showed that the textbooks include sufficient exercises to assimilate and refresh new vocabulary.
