In search of good science teaching with hands-on and minds-on computer-supported activities
Andrej Šorgo, 2011, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: In maximizing the effect of emerging technologies pre-service teachers should receive assistance in building complex knowledge of how to meaningfully integrate content, pedagogy and technology into the construct of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCTK). Teaching by design was found to be a promising strategy in order to support prospective teachers in finding ways to introduce hands-on and mind-on computer-supported activities into their teaching practice.

The creativity competence : teaching the unteachable at the Faculty of Arts, Maribor
Michelle Gadpaille, 2011, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: The paper presents one model for a first-year lesson in the Department of English Studies, a lesson that encourages creativity among students in a class combining literature, language and cultural studies. Against a background of theoretical support for such student-centered pedagogy, the author argues for the importance of releasing student voices, both spoken and written, as a prerequisite for producing students competent in and confident of creative problem-solving.

Knowledge about and acceptance of genetically modified organisms among pre-service teachers: a comparative study of Turkey and Slovenia
Andrej Šorgo, Jana Ambrožič-Dolinšek, Muhammet Usak, Murat Özel, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Genetically modified organisms cannot be regarded as merely a topic for academic debate, since these have serious implications as a research field and for production based on genetic engineering. Public debates rarely base their arguments on elements rooted in scientific arguments and knowledge but are heavily loaded with emotions, opinions and informal reasoning. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge and acceptance of genetically modified organisms among prospective teachers in Slovenia and Turkey. Knowledge of genetic modification was measured with a two-tier instrument. The level of acceptance of genetic modification was measured with a 17-item instrument. Findings revealed that knowledge of genetics and biotechnology barely influenced the acceptability of genetic modification, and correlations are low. The relationship between knowledge and acceptance was not significant among Slovenian students and while significant for the Turkish or combined groups, the r values were only 0.179 and 0.244. It was found that differences in the acceptability of clusters of different kinds of genetically modified organisms do exist between the two countries. In both countries, participants recognized microorganisms and plants that produce something useful as the most acceptable organisms, while at the other end were animals used for consumption or as donors of organs. Practical implications for teaching are discussed and implications for further studies are drawn.

False reality or hidden messages: reading graphs obtained in computerized biological experiments
Andrej Šorgo, Slavko Kocijančič, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Information and communication technology (ICT) has become an inseparable part of schoolwork and a goal of education to prepare scientifically literate and digitally competent citizens. Yet the introduction of computers into school work has been much slower than its introduction in other spheres of life. Teachers' lack of knowledge/skills and difficulty in integrating ICT into instruction affect the realization of computer-related goals in schools. Another hidden obstacle that can affect the introduction of computers into the Biology laboratory can be discomfort with the interpretation of graphs obtained by data-loggers. We can group these difficulties with graph outcomes into 4 areas: 1) Explanations of the curves that lie beyond the domain of Biology, in Physics, Chemistry or some other discipline; 2) Hardware properties; 3) Unknown properties of experimental components; 4) Occasional equipment breakdowns or crashes.

SVONAR : a new quantitative method for studying learner satisfaction
Peter Kokol, Slavko Cvetek, Marko Kokol, Petra Kokol, Matej Urbas, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: We investigated studentsʼ feelings and well-being during the lesson. We were working on a problem of how to adjust teaching in the secondary school and achieve that students will feel as good as possible and better follow the instruction. A hypothesis was set that, by measuring the desired length of lesson and factors which influence lesson length, we can measure and influencestudent satisfaction. Based on this hypothesis we investigated the factors which have influence on lesson length in a particular subject. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire. The subjects were students of II. gimnazija (secondary grammar school). The responses were analysed to obtain correlations between the factors (average grade in a subject, boredness and likableness of the teacher, length and level of boreness of lesson content, fear of the teacher) and lesson length. Results suggest that, by modifying these factors we could change studentsʼ opinions, that is, increase their willingness to attend classes. The set hypothesis was confirmed and it was shown that by using simple diagrammatic models built on the basis of linear regression we can identify and study the influence of these factors on lesson length.

PRIMER ICT : a new blended learning paradigm for teaching ICT skills to older people
Peter Kokol, Gregor Štiglic, 2011, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: As the `third age' of human life becomes noticeably longer, the opportunity for elderly to obtain new skills reduces the tendency to consider this period of life as being disadvantaged. Hence, the fundamental aim of the project PRIMER-ICT was to educate older people in four participating countries (Slovenia, Ireland, UK and Austria) in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) skills/practice by using an inter-generational and multisectoral approach empowering elderly to use ICT on everyday basis to improve their quality of live and to re-engage them in the society. To achievethis aim, students, primarily from health and ICT related fields have been recruited to become `trainers/teachers'. These students in turn have and will utilise acquired skills and knowledge to help train multipliers (community nurses, nurses in elderly homes, family members, volunteers from different sectors/ages, elderly), who in turn help training elderly.

Modeling and simulation of wireless radio networks: a case of student seminar work
Žarko Čučej, Karl Benkič, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In high education of telecommunication and automatic control, modeling and simulating complex systems of distributed monitoring and control are proven methods how to teach, learn and comprehend their essentials. The complexity oftheir use requires students to integrate knowledge from different courses and thatćs why they fit very well within the individual student project, as part of the seminar work. The importance of modeling and simulation in modern engineering is very well known. Recently, with development of new tool, which incorporates parts of real equipment, for xample telecommunication nodes with preprocessing of acquired data or controllers with integrated communication nodes, modelling and simulation have become not only useful to engineers, evelopersor researches but also very attractive to students. This article presents a case of modeling and simulation of wireless sensors networks using professional simulation tools from OPNET and open-code tools developed by our Ph. D. students.
