Using movies to teach professionalism to medical students
Zalika Klemenc-Ketiš, Janko Kersnik, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: Professionalism topics are usually not covered as a separate lesson within formal curriculum, but in subtler and less officially recognizededucational activities, which makes them difficult to teach and assess. Interactive methods (e.g. movies) could be efficient teaching methods but are rarely studied. The aims of this study were: 1) to test the relevance and usefulness of movies in teaching professionalism to fourth year medical students and, 2) to assess the impact of this teaching method on students' attitudes towards some professionalism topics. Method: This was an education study with qualitative data analysis in a group of eleven fourth year medical students from the Medical School of University Maribor who attended an elective four month course on professionalism. There were 8 (66.7%) female students in the group. The mean age of the students was 21.9 +/- 0.9 years. The authors used students' written reports and oral presentations as the basisfor qualitative analysis using thematic codes. Results: Students recognised the following dimensions in the movie: communication, empathy, doctors' personal interests and palliative care. It also made them think abouttheir attitudes towards their own life, death and dying. Conclusion: The controlled environment of movies successfully enables students to explore their values, beliefs, and attitudes towards features of professionalism without feeling that their personal integrity had been threatened. Interactiveteaching methods could become an indispensible aid in teaching professionalism to new generations.

Developing academic vocabulary with AWL gapmaker and corpus data
Agata Križan, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: There is a growing need for the development of at least some academic vocabulary in students of EFL (studying English for teaching and non-teaching purposes), if one of the main aims of EFL study is to produce competent users of English. Students are expected to read and understand advanced professional texts, not simply to successfully complete their degrees but to become a part of educated society, and to be able to meet the demands placed upon their knowledge in a prefessional environment. The reading and understanding of professional texts can be a highly demanding activity because of the number of academic and professional terms such texts include. This paper exemplifies the usefulness of a gap-fill exercise, as one among a range of options for developing and testing academic vocabulary in a professional context. The exercise was compiled with AWL gapmaker based on a professional review text, which includes academic items of vocabulary. The gap-fill exercise was used with two groups of EFL students in the same year of study and installed at two difficulty levels for two reasons: to test students' existing knowledge of academic vocabulary, and to enrich it through the analysis of words in context/co-text relation using a concordancing program. The paper compares the answers of both groups to determine the most problematic entries (incorrect answers), and to provide the possible reasons for them. Further, contextual clues are taken into consideration as a helpful source for determining correct entries, and tested with the concordancing program. Besides the emphasis on the usefulness of such gap-fill exercises combined with corpus for the development and enrichment of academic vocabulary, the paper also emphasizes the importance of guiding students in how to search for different grammatical and other contextual clues to make correct inferences, and how to use concordances to support or reject the claims.

Cross-curricular teaching
Melita Kukovec, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The knowledge learners acquire at school has to be applicable in practice to ensure their motivation for learning. Both cross-curricular and interdisciplinary teaching provide a meaningful way in which students can use the knowledge acquired in one context as the basis for learning in other contexts in and out of school. By using interdisciplinary teaching, the instructor can present the topics in a holistic manner: this approach therefore allows us to activate more of the learners' senses and intelligences. Since Mathematics is one of the least liked subjects by our students, and English one of the favorite ones, the article will demonstrate how we can integrate activities addressing all types of intelligences in a language learning class to achieve the whole range of Bloom's levels of educational objectives on the basis of a novel which includes a wealth of references to mathematics: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, which has recently been compulsory reading in all Slovene grammar school programs.

Assessment of young learners' foreign language in Slovenian primary schools
Mihaela Brumen, Branka Čagran, Shelagh Rixon, 2005, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Assessment should regularly and systematically be integrated into the process of learning and teaching. That is, it should reflect the kinds of activity that regularly occur in class and with which pupils are famillar. It should have a strong diagnostic function that will provide useful information to teachers and learners in enabling them to take stock of where they are and if necessary to adapt their particular strategies. The research reported in this article focuses on an investigation of Slovenian foreign language teachers' experiences and attitudes toward the assessment of primary learners of a foreign language. By means of a survey questionnaire we present the characteristics of teachers' assessment in practice, and teachers' attitudes toward assessment at the primary level. The survey shows that all teachers assess their young learners of foreign languages, more often numerically than with comments. They also believe that they are responsible for assessment, just as they believe that teachers and young learners alike have the right to these the results.

Applicability and challenges of using machine translation in translator training
Melita Koletnik, 2011, strokovni članek

Opis: During the last decade, translation as well as translator training have experienced a significant change. This change has been significantly influenced by the development of the Internet and the successive availability of web-based translation resources, such as Google Translate. Their introduction into the translation didactic process and training is no longer a matter of a teacher’s personal preference and IT skills, but a necessity imposed by the ever-swifter advancement of technology. This article presents the experimental results of an ongoing broader research study focusing on the modes and frequency of use of the Internet, Google Translate and Google Translator Toolkit among translation students at the undergraduate level. The preliminary results, presented in this article, are based on a questionnaire which was prepared in relation to the use of Google Translate while considering the latest professional findings. The article concludes with the author’s observations as to the applicability of these resources in translator training and the challenges thereof.

THE USE OF MUSIC, SONGS AND SONG LYRICS IN AN ESL CLASSROOM AND THEIR MOTIVATIONAL IMPACT ON THE LEARNERS
Jaka Cafuta, 2016, magistrsko delo

Opis: This MA paper explores different ways of using music, songs and song lyrics in an ESL classroom, different experience of teachers and other researchers with this area, and the effects music and songs have on students and class work. The theoretical section includes scientific findings, experience and reports of researchers and teachers, relating to a wide spectrum of using music and songs for teaching English in many different ways. It also explores the area of motivation, its position in the learning process and the correlation between motivation and the use of music and songs in the classroom. The empirical section presents a more practical follow-up to the theoretical section, and is roughly divided into four “sub-sections”: the first sub-section was designed to research the opinions and experience of English language teachers from Maribor, Celje and Velenje (and their immediate surroundings) about using music and songs in an ESL classroom. There were 89 elementary school teachers included in the survey, which was also the instrument for data collection in this sub-section. The data shows that most of the teachers use music and songs quite often in their classrooms and have a predominantly positive experience with it. Most teachers strongly agree that music and songs enrich the lesson and activate the students. However, there are some who believe that music and songs take up too much time in the already over-stuffed schedule. Teachers use different sources to find their music and songs and also present these songs in different ways. Nevertheless, it is very uncommon for them to sing and play the songs to the students themselves- they usually use a cd or the internet. Most teachers use children’s songs and also believe that using songs is most effective with younger learners in the 1st triad. The majority of teachers also believe that music has the most powerful effect on student motivation and participation, however, they don’t see music and songs as good alternatives for standard language exercises and drills. Overall, most believe that an occasional, but regular use of music could change classroom practice in a very positive way (which is why many of them are already (more or less) including it into their English lessons). The second sub-section refers to a case-study implemented for researching the effect of using music and songs for teaching English on student learning achievement. The data was collected with the help of specially designed tests of knowledge (pre-tests and post-tests) and the case-study itself, in which 3 English lessons with music and songs were carried out in two groups of students from grade 9 (control group (9 students) and experimental group (8 students)) from one of the elementary school in Maribor. The results show that the two groups had different initial knowledge before the experiment even began- the experimental group scored higher on the pre-test of the 2nd conditional structure. Even though there were no other statistically significant differences between the two groups, the effect size measurement has shown that music has a medium to strong effect on student learning achievement. However, there was a statistically-significant difference in scores on the 1st conditional tests in the experimental group relating to progress within the group. I believe that same progress would have been seen in with the 2nd conditional structure too, but the students had already “aced” the pre-test, so it was almost impossible to achieve a statistically significant difference with the post-test. The third sub-section deals with researching the effects that using music and songs in the classroom has on student engagement, student motivation and classroom atmosphere. The data here was gathered with the help of a specially designed observational checklist with a chronological scale for observing classes/lessons. The results here were unanimous and show that all three categories under study were rated much high

High school English grammar knowledge and the influence of English coursebook use in the Celje region
Tjaša Zupan, 2016, magistrsko delo

Opis: In this thesis we were writing about teaching foreign languages in Slovenian schools and about the methods and approaches used. We were talking about the lesson structure and lesson planning in general and later focused more on teaching grammar in schools. We were trying to answer the questions about what grammar is, why teach grammar and how to do it. We were also interested in syllabi and the fact how grammar learning is defined in them. Our theoretical part finishes with a chapter about the English coursebook selection. In our empirical part of the thesis we mainly focused on investigating the 2nd year students’ grammatical knowledge of Present tenses and were looking for possible correlation between their grammatical knowledge and the quality of the English coursebooks used in schools, frequency of students’ use of English coursebooks and students’ self-evaluation of their English grammar knowledge.
