The Phenomenon of (Sustainable) Tourism Activities on Farms in Slovenia During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Maja Borlinič Gačnik, Boris Prevolšek, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic is the reason why the development trends of the tourism industry are changing today. The purpose of this article is to address issues of future tourism industry development, linking it to elements of sustainable development trends. The article presents the main elements of the sustainable concept of rural and farm tourism. Using the method of compilation and description, we want to check, based on statistical data related to farm tourism activities in Slovenia (before and during the COVID-19 pandemic), whether it is possible to detect development trends in Slovenia, in the direction of sustainability that are linked to the concept of farm tourism. This study also aims to identify a number of measures that can improve sustainability at the farming tourism level in Slovenia, in a post-COVID phase. According to the findings of numerous comparisons and statistical analysis, it can be stated that the future development trends show a great need to develop the decarbonisation of the industry, digitalisation of industry, and the involvement of the local population in the provision of services. In the present global situation, we have reached a point where it will be necessary to focus on sustainable and digital forms of the industry, in order to further post-COVID development of the tourism industry.

Cultural events as tools of developing sustainable tourism in rural areas : the case of Sevnica in Slovenia
Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The purpose of this article is to identify cultural tourism as one of the best practices that can help in the implementation of the Strategy for Sustainable Growth of Slovenian Tourism (2017 - 2021) and to examine the role of cultural events as tools for the development of sustainable tourism. The latter is one of the main trends in the tourism sector, at least in the European context and also in Slovenia as a member country of the European Union. The challenge of developing sustainable tourism destinations is considerable in rural areas, where local communities must be closely observed and by all means included in the decision-making process on future tourism development. This is of the utmost importance as tourism is much more than an economic activity. Therefore, key decision-makers need to be aware that tourism activities affect all local people and many areas of their life and that the role of tourism in rural areas is to improve the quality of life of the local population. Since at least some form of culture can be found in every village, small (rural) tourist destinations often find important opportunities for sustainable tourism development in organizing cultural events, which lead to greater community visibility, cultural branding of the destination, which is significant and also several business opportunities. On the case of Sevnica, this article aims to demonstrate that there is great potential for further development of cultural tourism and its subtypes in Slovenia by further developing cultural tourism and various tourism products based on rich cultural heritage.

The role of performance and environmental sustainability indicators in hotel competitiveness
Zorica Đurić, Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Environmental protection and environmental sustainability are becoming increasingly important factors in the hotel business and their competitiveness, in a market that brings numerous benefits. Environmental sustainability is, increasingly, considered one of the most important functions of the hotel business, as well as communication and marketing, which attracts a larger number of guests. Some of the key aspects of hotel environmental sustainability are performance and environmental sustainability indicators, as well as hotel management of environmental performance in order to establish efficiency in that process. The principal question arising is how environmentally sustainable business affects hotel performance, and what are the most important indicators of the environmental hotel business. The aim of this article is to offer an insight into, and analysis of, performance and indicators of the environmental sustainability of hotels through the relevant literature. A case study from Serbia is used to point out the complexity and the significance of these indicators in the hotel business, as well as to emphasise the importance of environmental reports in the case of Serbia. The findings of our study are significant because they help hotel managers identify new opportunities for employing more sustainable processes for saving resources.

The impacts of adventure tourism in mountain regions – a review
Tomi Špindler, Ksenija Vodeb, 2022, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Recently, mountain regions have become highly attractive and important areas for tourism (Beedie & Hudson, 2003; WTO & UNEP, 2008; Rama et al., 2019). One of the most dynamic components of tourism in mountains is adventure tourism, which combines travel, sport and outdoor recreation (Beedie & Hudson, 2003). Since mountains represent sensitive areas in terms of sustainability, it is important to approach them appropriately, in order to apply measures to optimize the impacts of tourism. This study covers a review of the impacts of adventure tourism on mountain areas and an examination of measures that might optimize the impacts of such tourism. The purpose of this paper is to present the latest findings in the field of the impacts of adventure tourism in mountain areas, and certain measures that can be taken to balance the positive and negative impacts. The findings show that the impacts of adventure tourism in mountain destinations vary, and therefore each destination must be treated individually. Furthermore, a thorough approach to achieve balance is needed on a case by case basis, since there is no universal formula for sustainable development of destinations due to their different characteristics. The implications and further research opportunities are given.

5.
Sustainability in tourism determined by an asymmetric game with mobility
Manuel Chica, Juan M. Hernández, Matjaž Perc, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Many countries worldwide rely on tourism for their economic well-being and development. But with issues such as over-tourism and environmental degradation looming large, there is a pressing need to determine a way forward in a sustainable and mutually rewarding manner. With this motivation, we here propose an asymmetric evolutionary game with mobility where local stakeholders and tourists can either cooperate or defect in a spatially structured setting. Our study reflects that sustainable tourism is primarily determined by an optimal trade-off between economic benefits of the stakeholders and their costs related to the application of sustainability policies. In contrast, the specific benefits and costs of the tourists are comparatively less relevant. The reader can also observe that allowing for greater tourist mobility decreases cooperation and leads to faster polarization among local stakeholders. In agreement with observations worldwide, we identify decreasing population densities in tourist areas in terms of both, stakeholders and tourists, to be a key aid to greater cooperation and overall sustainability of tourism. These results are rooted in spatial formations and complex alliances that manifest spontaneously through the evolutionary dynamics in a structured population.

Role of rural tourism and agriculture for development of rural, protected areas
Olga Baranyai, Gábor Baranyai, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The main challenge in rural areas currently is facing migration and unemployment. Inhabitants of the traditional Őrség region also face this serious problem. The aim of this paper is to reveal problems in the region highlighting the two pillars of local rural development solutions; the current situation and opportunities for tourism and agriculture development. The opinion of local inhabitants acquired through questionnaires bare a special role in this search for solutions. Given its geographic location, success of the region’s rural development may also be achieved through cross-border initiatives and cooperation.

Business plan for a Zen garden
Maja Žibrat, Karmen Pažek, Vesna Mila Meden, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The placement of a theme park in the form of a Zen garden, as a business opportunity in the Slovenian rural area, is discussed. The design of the garden, with all the major points of a standard business plan, is accurately presented, with a description of the business, branch, and services, market analysis, marketing strategy, financial projections, and a plan of the work and activities. The financial aspect is presented as the amount of investment, net present value, and internal rate of return. The amount of investment is estimated at € 14.891, which should be reimbursed within 4 years of operations. The estimated internal rate of return is estimated at 16.86%. Part of the study is the market analysis - conduction of a survey into knowledge of, and interest in, Zen and Zen gardens. The principles of landscape ecology are respected, as the Zen garden would be set in the woods and will blend seamlessly into the landscape.

Heritage trails through Dolenjska and Bela Krajina in Slovenia : a multi-stakeholder approach to tourism development
Marko Koščak, 2016, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: One of the crucial methodologies for growing and developing a level of tourism which is sustainable and enhances the totality of local and regional environments is a multi-stakeholder approach to tourism development. In this paper, we present the case of the 'Heritage trails through Dolenjska and Bela krajina in SE Slovenia' in which sustainable rural development (we take this to include cultural & heritage, vinicultural & gastronomic, as well as ecological tourism) is one of the key elements of the integral mix of business economy, viz. development of the region in the SE of Slovenia. The integral approach showed from the very beginning of project activities, within the Novo Mesto chamber of commerce, its long-time implementation until the present, as one of the key products within the tourist destination of Dolenjska, Bela Krajina and Kočevsko-Ribniška. It takes an integrated approach in terms of start-up, implementation and development and is supported by and benefits from the notion of a core of multiple stakeholders.

Hydroelectric powerplant Kablić - Impact on the environment and spatial development
Ljubomir Mioč, 2017, magistrsko delo

Opis: Hydro energy is simply energy that is taken from water and converted into electricity. The most common method of producing energy from water is taking place in hydropower plants. These facilities represent industrial architecture where water coming down through an area causes turbines to rotate and the energy is captured to run a generator. When creating a hydropower plant for producing hydropower, in some cases, areas must be flooded, which largely affects spatial development during the planning process. In the 21st century, people are becoming increasingly interested in obtaining electricity through hydro potential, especially since water is a clean and renewable source of energy that does not emit toxins and does not pollute the environment. Due to this fact, hydroelectric plants are becoming places of education and receive more visitors, which is developing a new branch of sustainable tourism.
