1. From zero to one: a new perspective on the fuzzy front end of innovation and the Stage-Gate® modelPeter Alešnik, Igor Vrečko, Iztok Palčič, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The Stage-Gate® model has historically provided a systematic framework for New Product Development (NPD). However, the evolving landscape of innovation necessitates continuous enhancement. This paper redefines the model's foundational structure by advocating for the recognition of the Discovery Phase as Stage 1, emphasizing its essential role in aligning initial ideation with strategic goals, streamlining processes, and enhancing NPD efforts. Using a mixed-methods approach, including a systematic literature review, synthesis of illustrative examples and secondary data and case study analysis, the research demonstrates that formalizing the Discovery Phase improves earlystage decision-making, enhances alignment between front-end exploration and downstream execution and mitigates risks by supporting more informed project development. Synthesised sectoral examples show that incorporating the Discovery Phase improves feasibility, reduces risk, and boosts efficiency. For example, simulation planning early in innovation process increased manufacturing throughput by 52 %, while early IP checks lowered infringement risk. The proposed revision boosts the Stage-Gate® model's adaptability and integration with modern methodologies such as AI, Agile, Lean Startup, Design Thinking and TRIZ. The findings highlight how this change promotes a comprehensive approach to NPD. The implications extend to practical applications and future research, offering organizations a flexible framework that meets modern market and technological demands. It specifically focuses on issues where the authors critically analyze and discuss the protection of children's rights in the context of sustainable development and digital transformation, as well as the challenges posed by both environments. 3. Impact of grassland management system intensity on composition of functional groups and soil chemical properties in semi-natural grasslandsUrška Lisec, Maja Prevolnik Povše, Miran Podvršnik, Branko Kramberger, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Semi-natural grasslands are some of the most species-rich habitats in Europe and provide important ecosystem services such as biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration and soil fertility maintenance. This study investigates how different intensities of grassland management affect the composition of functional groups and soil chemical properties. Five grassland management systems were analyzed: Cut3—three cuts per year; LGI—low grazing intensity; CG—combined cutting and grazing; Cut4—four cuts per year; and HGI—high grazing intensity. The functional groups assessed were grasses, legumes and forbs, while soil samples from three depths (0–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm) were analyzed for their chemical properties (soil organic carbon—SOC; soil total nitrogen—STN; inorganic soil carbon—SIC; soil organic matter—SOM; potassium oxide—K2O; phosphorus pentoxide—P2O5; C/N ratio; and pH) and physical properties (volumetric soil water content—VWC; bulk density—BD; and porosity—POR). The results showed that less intensive systems had a higher proportion of legumes, while species diversity, as measured via the Shannon index, was the highest in the Cut4 system. The CG system tended to have the highest SOC and STN at a 0–10 cm depth, with a similar trend observed for SOCstock at a 0–30 cm depth. The Cut4, HGI and CG systems also had an increased STNstock. Both grazing systems had the highest P2O5 content. A tendency towards a higher BD was observed in the top 10 cm of soil in the more intensive systems. Choosing a management strategy that is tailored to local climate and site conditions is crucial for maintaining grassland stability, enhancing carbon sequestration and promoting long-term sustainability in the context of climate change. 6. Born globals and born sustainables : motives of accumulating wealth and of making a difference in the worldKarin Širec, Mahsa Samsami, Thomas Schøtt, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background/Purpose: This study investigates the distinct entrepreneurial motivations driving export activities and sustainability pursuits in Slovenian businesses, with a particular focus on differences between newborns and mature enterprises. The study proposes that entrepreneurs who prioritize wealth accumulation are more likely to engage in export activities, particularly those running startups, under the pressures of global trade. Conversely, in light of the shifting cultural values towards sustainability, it is hypothesized that entrepreneurs who are committed to making a difference in the world will be more inclined towards sustainability engagement, a tendency that may be more pronounced in startups. Methods:To test these hypotheses, linear regression modelling, using data collected from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor survey of businesses in Slovenia was employed. Results: Newborns, in comparison to mature businesses, are more engaged in both exporting and sustainability pursuits. Interestingly, the motives behind these activities differ significantly. Exporting is primarily driven by the pursuit of wealth accumulation, while sustainability engagement is motivated by the desire to make a positive difference in the world. Conclusion: These findings provide valuable insights into the unique characteristics of internationalization and sustainability pursuits in startups versus mature businesses. They highlight the role of distinct entrepreneurial motivations in shaping business practices, contributing to the literature on entrepreneurship and business sustainability. 7. Circular economy implementation in the electric and electronic equipment industryMargaret Zoka, Romana Korez-Vide, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The circular economy (CE) encourages sustainability by shifting towards business models that prolong resource use. The quantity of waste generated by electric and electronic equipment (WEEE or e-waste) is rapidly rising and is one of the fastest-growing waste streams. Our paper explores the awareness, benefits, barriers, incentives, and implementation of CE in the electric and electronic equipment (EEE) industry in Slovenia and Croatia. In the theoretical section, we review the existing literature on CE, the EEE industry in both countries, and their policy frameworks for developing CE. Based on primary research through a survey and inferential statistical analysis in the empirical section, we investigate the implementation of CE in the EEE industry in both countries. This paper identifies which CE practices companies in the EEE industry implement, how company size affects CE implementation, how companies evaluate institutional support to CE, and their plans regarding CE. The results highlight some differences between the two countries. Drawing on the empirical findings, we determine key challenges and opportunities for increasing CE adoption in this sector and formulate some European suggestions for policymakers, industry practitioners, and researchers. 9. Aligning business solutions and business requirements for digital transformation – case research : V.Uroš Zabukovšek, Simona Sternad Zabukovšek, Samo Bobek, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: This study explores how Business and IT Alignment (BITA) influences business performance (PERFO) and corporate sustainability (SPACS) using a mixed-methods case study of an international manufacturing enterprise. The quantitative analysis (PLS-SEM) indicated BITA affects PERFO indirectly through IT service quality (ITSQ), while remote work (EWORK), despite its relation to BITA, showed no significant impact. BITA strongly predicted SPACS by enhancing employees’ sustainability knowledge, confidence, and willingness to act. Qualitative findings from semi-structured interviews revealed a BITA maturity of 3.3 (on a 5-point scale), highlighting its role in sustainability via better decision-making, process optimization, and IT-enabled transparency. Notable discrepancies between managerial and employee perceptions of BITA maturity were identified. Results suggest successful BITA fosters sustainability-oriented behaviour and IT-driven performance improvements, though continuous reinforcement within organizations is required. The study emphasizes the value of integrating qualitative and quantitative methods for comprehensive insights into BITA's impact. 10. We analyse collaborative workplaces where humans and collaborative robots (CR) work together, emphasizing the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. The research work focuses on how personalized CR parameters and optimized work environments contribute to improved productivity, well-being, and sustainability. Through simulations, the paper evaluates the operational efficiency of both manual assembly and human-robot collaborative (HRC) setups, providing insight into the economic, environmental, and social impacts of Industry 5.0 manufacturing systems.
