Development of a local event 'Summer in Samobor'

Opis: Events are one of the main factors of tourism development of a destination. Also, local events are one of the biggest factors that influence tourism in every town, city or community, and they are of great importance for a tourist destination. Summer in Samobor is a particularly successful new event that is in the process of development. In the theoretical part of the graduate thesis, the following topics are explained: the significance of the event, the type and size of the event, the planning and realisation of the event and the sustainability of the event. In the first part of our research, we presented the theoretical knowledge on the subject. Then we presented the event Summer in Samobor taking into account the following factors: aims and visions of the event, programme of the event, place and time of the event, registrations and permits, financial management, sponsors, media and promotion, food and beverages, and finally the sustainability of the event. As part of our research, we conducted interviews with the representative of the external agency Wanderlust Events and the representative of the Samobor Tourist Board. Using the interviews mentioned, we found out how the event developed, what factors influenced the success of the event and how sustainable the event is. The results of this research show that this event is developing every year and that the quality of the event is constantly being raised. Also, as some of the main success factors of the event Summer in Samobor, the following were emphasized: improvement of socio-cultural awareness, strong promotion of sustainable events, rich and high-quality content,uniqueness, cooperation and support of partners, good organization and creative ideas.

Slow tourism in the post-Covid era : the case of Montenegro

Opis: This chapter explores slow tourism as a sustainable tourism concept with the potential for slow tourism offers in Montenegro. Namely, the post-Covid tourist faces an accelerated pace of life and often a stressful daily routine. They need relaxation and a vacation that cannot be found in the tourist offers containing lots of sightseeing tours in as short a time as possible. Accordingly, a new concept of travel has been developing in recent years, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, one which promotes relaxation and "deep" exploration of the tourist destination - slow tourism. The slow tourist is usually not attracted to the established routes and ready tourist products. Instead, the focus is placed on traveling to the destination, using slow means of transportation, as well as on avoiding large hotels. Slow tourists are trying to get to know the local culture and establish contacts with the locals. Montenegro enables all that.

Assessment of environmental sustainability integration into higher education for future experts and leaders

Opis: The environmental and climate crisis is gaining priority among critical human concerns; therefore, environmental knowledge and sustainable solutions play a significant role and gaining global popularity as an academic discipline. Additionally, United Nations Sustainable Development Goal no. 4 acknowledges education's role in promoting sustainable development, sustainable lifestyles, human rights, social responsibility, circular economy, and greening our economy and society. In this paper new conceptual framework that focuses on systematically analyzing environmental sustainability integration in study programs and subjects is developed. The main aim is to reflect the conceptual basis of education related to environmental sustainability topics such as sustainable development, social responsibility, circular economy, ecology, environmental protection, and greening to boost future environmental management practices in industry and services. Defining the level of integration of environmental and sustainability-related topics is divided by research field classification and study cycles (BSc, MSc, PhD). The specific added value of the developed conceptual framework is reflected by defining cross-sections and inter-and trans-disciplinary of sustainability topics integrated within specific programs and subjects. The conceptual framework was tested by assessing 1051 programs in progress in Slovenia. It was revealed that the highest share of study programs has an intermediate level of environmental sustainability with 2–3 subjects (392 study programs). These are represented mainly by integrating environmental protection, ecology, and “greening” but less with circular economy and social responsibility. Significant differences among specific study programs and study fields reflect that young intellectuals will not be equally educated and qualified for future managerial challenges. Master students gain the best insight into core sustainability and environmental topics needed for future environmental managers.

Business IT alignment impact on corporate sustainability

Opis: Business-IT alignment (BITA) has become crucial for effective organisational management in today's interconnected global economy. This article investigates the relationship between BITA and corporate sustainability, exploring how businesses can leverage BITA for sustainable growth and development. The study employs a case research approach in a multinational manufacturing organisation, utilising a mixed methods research (MMR) design. In the quantitative part of the research, the PLS-SEM technique was used to examine the influence of six BITA factors on employees' self-perceived action competence for sustainability (SPACS). This study confirmed that all six BITA factors strongly influence all three SPACS factors. In the qualitative part of the research, semi-structured interviews were used to measure the BITA maturity level of the organisation and the influence of BITA factors on corporate sustainability. Based on quantitative and qualitative research results, it can be confirmed that BITA strongly influences corporate sustainability. Results also confirm that there is no universal approach to BITA and its influence on corporate sustainability. Organisations must focus on all factors of BITA equally to achieve better levels of BITA and ensure its influence on corporate sustainability.

Customising tourism experiences with use of advanced technologies, example of collaboration impact token and digital online tourist identity

Opis: Nowadays, data on tourist profiles are created by large platforms that exchange and trade the collected data with each other without sharing it with service providers (hotels, restaurants, etc.). Providers are thus increasingly becoming mere "executors" and cannot devote themselves to the guest as they once did. Using the example of Collaboration Impact Token and Digital Online Tourist Identity, the article suggests the development of a sys-tem with use of key enabling technologies from Industry 4.0 that will offer guests a personalised service, reward them for positive behavior if they are contributing to the positive effects of tourism and redirect them on less burdened areas with the aim to offer a significantly better tourist experience and the development of more balanced sustainable development.

Natural disasters and tourism : Are the risks taken into account?

Opis: The tourism sector can be severely affected by unforeseen events, such as natural disasters, which are characterized as events with low probability but high impact. The COVID-19 pandemic came as an unprecedented shock to the tourism sector, with numerous reports appearing in many media outlets showing industry experts and directors calling for outside help to avoid worst-case scenarios for their businesses, even in the early days of the pandemic. We therefore wonder whether the approach of tourism companies to risk was inappropriate. Given the number of natural disasters that have occurred over the past few decades, we cannot argue that there have not been enough warning signs to encourage tourism companies to prepare for unforeseen events. A comprehensive review of natural disasters in recent years can be a valuable tool for tourism companies to assess such risks and develop strategies and action plans to increase resilience and sustainability. The latter should become key components of regular business.

Preserving and presenting heritage through sustainable energy tourism : the case of Kobarid in Slovenia

Opis: Energy tourism, which is quite recent despite the fact that the practice of tourists visiting power plants, very often for educational purposes, has a long tradition in Slovenia due to power plants on the Drava River. Particularly, the oldest Fala power plant is an area where the technical field of electric power production and transmission overlaps with tourism. The article that employs the methods of participant observation, interviews with some stakeholders and content analysis focuses on some possibilities of including electric power production and transmission infrastructure into various tourist and educational programmes, including through storytelling, which is a useful tool also when it comes to presenting sustainable and socially responsible project design, considering the needs of all stakeholders involved in the process and, consequently, raising awareness and responsibility towards the environment. Based on a case study of the Kobarid substation, which is a modern sustainably designed power facility built in a Natura 2000 protected area, this article focuses on the possibilities of creating new energy tourism products by employing storytelling, new media and new technologies.

Optimal positioning of mobile cranes on construction sites using nonlinear programming with discontinuous derivatives

Opis: Mobile cranes represent conventional construction machinery that is indispensable for the erection of most prefabricated buildings, especially those containing heavy components. However, it is also common knowledge that the engagement of these machines has a significant influence on the environment, various social aspects of the construction process, and its economic benefits. Optimal positioning of the mobile crane on the construction site, primarily driven by the contractor’s interest to perform assembly operations with expensive machinery as effectively as possible, considerably reduces not only the costs of engaging such a machine but indirectly also its negative impacts on construction sustainability. This paper discusses an exact nonlinear model for the optimization task. The optimization model consists of a cost objective function that is subject to various duration and positioning constraints for the mobile crane, including bounds on its degrees of freedom of movement and stop positions. Because the model formulation includes discontinuous and non-smooth expressions, nonlinear programming with discontinuous derivatives (DNLP) was employed to ensure the optimal solution was reached. The model provides the mobile crane operator with exact key information that enables the complete and optimal assembly of the building structure under consideration. Additionally, the information gained on the optimal distribution of the mobile crane rental period to assembly operations allows for a detailed duration analysis of the entire process of building structure erection, which can be used for its further improvement. An application example is given in this study to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed approach.

Barriers to applying last-mile logistics in the Egyptian market : an extension of the technology acceptance model

Opis: Drawing on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), this research aims to investigate the impact of social, environmental, and technological barriers on adopting the last-mile logistics application. This research used a self-administrative questionnaire to collect 1060 respondents from the Egyptian market and analysed it using partial least square structural equation modeling. The findings revealed that some elements could obstruct the implementation of last-mile delivery technologies, namely complexity, collaboration efforts between users and application developers and the impact of technical knowledge and expertise on the potentially involved users. The sharing economy helps organisations reduce contaminants, emissions and carbon footprints, and last-mile logistics is one of the tools of the sharing economy that can enhance the productivity and competitiveness of logistics and boost consumer fulfillment. This research will help enhance organisations’ performance in Egypt as a developing country and push towards applying environmental sustainability practices, as it introduces a tool to enhance customer satisfaction and reduce emissions by illustrating how last-mile logistics can be implemented. This is particularly important as last-mile logistics face some implementation barriers, especially in developing countries. In addition, it will help in extending the theory through conceptualising its abstract ideas with the research variables and applying it in a different context.
