Sprache und Stil im Werk von Alma M. Karlin
2023, znanstvena monografija

Opis: Alma Maksimiliana Karlin (1889–1950) was born in Celje 130 years ago. Since the mid 1920s, she was considered an important world traveler and by the end of World War II Alma Karlin became a very popular and notable German writing author. The volume provides research findings on the linguistic and stylistic aspects as well as some others specific features of Karlin’s literary heritage. The papers are classified according to theoretical, methodological and empirical background and devided into three sections. The contributions in the first part discuss the possibilities of different ap-proaches to studing literary and aesthetic characteristics in Karlin’s select-ed works. Dejan Kos (Maribor) illustrates how Alma M. Karlin’s texts are characterized by an empathetic tendency to transcend the boundaries of her own world through aesthetics and spirituality. The discussion by Sylvia Brä-sel (Erfurt) shows that Karlin does not merely convey knowledge about the world and reflects on entertaining, foreign, and exotic, but also systematically re-presents herself. Alenka Jensterle-Doležal (Prague) describes the ways in which women’s roles and identities are constructed in the novel Svetlikanje v mraku. The analysis of style and language reveals that the author critically asseses woman’s life in a patriarchal society, while advocating racist judgments and prejudices of the time. The article by Melania Larisa Fabčič (Maribor) focuses on Karlin’s autobiography and her style, which is primarily constructed through reflection of emotions, recognized by the reader even when the text does not explicitly demonstrate them. The texts in the second part focus on different approaches of Alma M. Karlin’s textual style. Vida Jesenšek (Maribor) transparently presents the complexity of the author’s style. By implying linguistic, pragmatic and cognitive aspects, the research identifies the connections and mutual correlations between general principles of text’s structure, specific stylistic »meanings« and substantive textual aspects. Inge Pohl (Schwieberdingen) presents the first comprehensive linguistic analysis of the novel Windlichter des Todes, focusing on the archi-tectonic, structure and composition of literary characters and highlightening the function of the narrative perspective and the narrative structure. One of the most outstanding feautres of Alma M. Karlin’s literary texts is conveing emotions. In her research, Hana Bergerová (Ústí nad Labem) demonstrates that Karlin’s describes emotions in different, explicit and implicit, ways. The papers in the third part examine the creative use of language in Alma M. Karlin’s selected works. The reader notices linguistic creativity when rec-ognizing those linguistic meanings or devices in a text which seem unusual, unexpected, or deviating from expected. Urška Valenčič Arh (Ljubljana) studies the use of phraseological expressions in Der blaue Mond’s and compares the original to the Slovene translation. Alja Lipavic Oštir (Maribor) resarches travel texts with a particular emphasis on geographical names. Simona Štavbar (Ma-ribor) proceeds from the assumption that Karlin’s geobiographical texts contain evaluating statements which reinforce social prejudices. It is not surprising, therefore, that there are numerous euphemisms and dysphisms which Karlin uses to »indirectly« denote things, people, and events, concealing or empha-sizing certain judgments. Karlin’s creativity is also reflected in the effective use of word-formations. Inge Pohl (Schwieberdingen) studies neologisms in the novel Windlichter des Todes and describes the word-forming patterns used by Karlin to attract readers’ attention but which also demonstrate her exceptional knowledge of German. The volume offers a scholarly insight into a number of previously unexplored topics related to language and style of Alma M. Karlin’s literary works and outlines possibilities for further researches.

The effectiveness of a psychoeducative group programme regarding relationships in the treatment of sexual offenders : a preliminary study
Nuša Crnkovič, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: At a high-security psychiatric hospital in the UK, the Understanding Intimacy and Relationships (URI) psycho-educative group therapy was developed in an attempt to provide a therapeutic input for interpersonal difficulties displayed by patients with sex offending history. This study aimed to conduct a preliminary evaluation of the URI group effectiveness for sex offenders. Design/Methods/Approach: A longitudinal study with three groups of participants – sex offenders (n = 9) and non-sex offenders (n = 9) that completed the URI group, and the control group (n = 10), which were assessed at two time points was conducted at a high-security psychiatric hospital. Each group filled out three questionnaires at both timepoints – IIP-C, UCLA Loneliness Scale, and ECR-R. Findings: The results suggest a decrease in feelings of loneliness for both groups of patients that completed the URI programme, and a limited reduction of interpersonal difficulties. Results of within-subject changes regarding interpersonal difficulties among patients in URI group did not statistically significantly differ from the result of the control group. Research Limitations/Implications: The most evident limitation of the study is a very small sample size and lack of objective measurement of patients’ difficulties in interpersonal relations. Practical Implications: The findings suggest that the URI programme might have a limited effect on sex offenders due to the unsuccessful implementation of the Risk, Need, Responsivity Model, although several study limitations were present potentially affecting the outcome. Originality/Value: Longitudinal evaluation effectiveness of a clinical intervention for patients with sex offending history at a high-secure psychiatric hospital.

Mind Style Analysis of Emma Donoghue's Protagonist in the Novel Room
Valerija Tominc, 2018, magistrsko delo

Opis: Emma Donoghue’s main character and narrator in Room is a literary construct with a severely deviant mind style that portrays a unique outlook on the world. The protagonist is a five-year-old boy who has been living in extreme social isolation his whole life. His mother was kidnapped, locked in a room and repeatedly raped and gave birth to a son named Jack. The dissertation analyses and outlines the deviant features of his mind style. The analysis later focuses on the underlying reason that inspired or even provoked the author to construct such a deviant mind style. Two possible phenomena are introduced as the basis for the analysis. The first theory that is researched and then compared to the constructed mind style, is the theory of feral people, individuals living in extreme social isolation. Certain cases were supposedly raised by animals, others contained in small spaces without human contact. The second possible theory explaining Donoghue’s unique mind style construction, is an autistic disorder. Characteristics of feral and autistic individuals are often similar and sometimes even overlap, which is why this phenomenon was chosen as an alternative option for the basis of the construction of Jack’s mind style. The dissertation finally tries to determine, whether a feral or autistic nature can be ascribed to the protagonist, and to what extent he pertains to either theory.

Transformational leadership styles in Slovenian Police
Džemal Durić, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: The purpose of this research was to examine leadership styles among managers at different organizational levels in Slovenian Police organization and to examine relationships between leadership styles and outcomes criteria (effectiveness, satisfaction, and extra effort). Design/Methods/Approach: The study took a quantitative approach to test the Full Range Leadership Model (FRLM) with Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). Survey included police managers at local (290), regional (122), and state (74) level of Slovenian Police organization. Findings: There are more transformational leadership styles than transactional leadership styles and laissez-faire leadership styles demonstrated among Slovenian Police managers. Transformational leadership styles are expressed especially at higher organizational levels. Relationship between transformational leadership and outcomes criteria is stronger than relationship between transactional leadership and outcomes criteria. There is negative relationship between laissez-faire leadership styles and outcome criteria. Research limitations: The results are comparable with similar studies which used MLQ for self rating or measuring self perceptions of leadership styles. Future research should include subordinate’s perception of police manager’s leadership styles. That would reflect more realistic picture about leadership practice and performance. Practical implications: Results indicate which leadership styles have positive relationships with outcome criteria and can be a useful input for police leadership training and development process. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the Police Leadership literature. Paper extends understanding of leadership styles in police organizations and supports the propositions of the Full Range Leadership Model that transformational leadership extends the results of transactional leadership toward results beyond expectations.

Gender-Based Conversational Styles in Reality TV
Vesna Videmšek, 2019, magistrsko delo

Opis: This master’s thesis deals with differences in conversational styles between men and women in American reality TV show Big Brother. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the conversations in order to find out whether there exist any differences between male and female speakers in the use of minimal responses, hedges, questions, swear words, overlapping speech and topics in mixed-gender and same-gender conversations. Nine conversations between ten different contestants of the reality TV show Big Brother were randomly selected, transcribed and analyzed. The results of this master’s thesis reveal that women use more hedges and minimal responses than men. There are, however, no gender differences in the placement of minimal responses. Both men and women produce the majority of minimal responses at non-transition relevant places. Furthermore, women swear less than men and use milder swear words. Men, on the other hand, are more inclined to use competitive overlapping speech. They also ask more expressive style questions than women, whereas women ask more relational questions than men. Lastly, there are no significant differences in topic choice between men and women.

Examining determinants of leadership style among Montenegrin managers
Anđelko Lojpur, Ana Aleksić, Sanja Vlahović, Mirjana Pejić Bach, Sanja Peković, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: As a leader’s behavior can have a strong impact on different employee work- related outcomes, various approaches have been put forth in an effort to determine the most effective form of leadership and determinants of individuals’ choice of leadership style. This paper analyzed whether one’s choice of leadership style is due more to personal or organizational characteristics. We used survey data to investigate the determinants of leadership style among Montenegrin managers. Our analysis showed that, although demographic characteristics such as gender, age, and education do not influence the choice of leadership style, internal organizational characteristics such as hierarchical level, managerial orientation to tasks/people, and decision-making characteristics such as decision- making style and decision-making environment are positively associated with the choice of democratic leadership style. This contributes to recent research in leadership that shows how some personal characteristics are considered to be less important in developing certain styles and that the choice of style is more dependent and contingent on external influences and situations.

Cultural dimensions and leadership styles perceived by future managers : differences between Slovenia and a cluster of Central European countries
Danijel Pučko, Tomaž Čater, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The article contributes to the body of knowledge about the perceptions of future managers (i.e. business and engineering students) in both Slovenia and a cluster of Central European (CE) countries regarding actual cultural practices in their social environments, the value systems they possess and their attitudes to leadership styles. The main question addressed is whether future Slovenian managers are good representatives of the average future manager from CE (transitional) countries as far as their value system and attitudes to individual leadership styles are concerned. The research results confirm that the Slovenian (potential) future managers perceive actual cultural practices in their environment rather differently from their counterparts from the cluster of CE countries. Two decades of transition from socialist/communist socio-economic systems were apparently not long enough periods to achieve a higher level of harmonisation of existing cultures. The relevant value systems held by the Slovenian (potential) future managers and the CE cluster's future managers still differ significantly. The Slovenian future managers have (statistically) significantly different attitudes to individual leadership styles than their counterparts in the CE countries' cluster. The smallest differences in perceptions between the two stated groups of (potential) future managers exist regarding their views on what are the most important traits and skills of managers.

Ivan Grohar and Oskar Dev : an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary fragment comparison of their artistic works in Škofja Loka/Slovenia (1905-1911)
Franc Križnar, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The new Grohar’s room in the Škofja Loka Museum that is located in a more than a thousand years old town, some kilometres northwest of Ljubljana, Slovenia, represents one of the new possibilities to popularize old local history. Ivan Grohar (1867−1911) is one of the four well-known Slovenian painters from the beginning of the 20th century, together with Rihard Jakopič, Matija Jama and Matej Sternen. These Slovenian painters are the founders of Impressionism within the modern style. Škofja Loka became the so called Slovenian “Barbizon” (i.e. French village near Fontainebleau, once the settlement of painters) and this art and old tradition inspired another Slovenian (music) artist Oskar Dev (1868−1932), who composed some of his musical works (songs and choirs) in Škofja Loka, too. His and Grohar’s period in Škofja Loka resulted in some extraordinary art works i.e. paintings and musical works. They both were inspired by the countryside that reflected on their works. This is now one of the new Slovenian’s challenges of museology and musicology in an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach so the art of painting and music could be a benefit for the visitors of this and other museums.

First-Person Narrator's Mind Style in Slovenian Translations of the Novel To Kill a Mockingbird
Tadeja Tement, 2017, magistrsko delo

Opis: The Master’s thesis explores the first-person narrator's mind style in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird (1960) and its first Slovenian translation entitled Ne ubijaj slavca (1964). The second Slovenian translation with the title Če ubiješ oponašalca (2015) is used as a means of comparison and illustration of different translations. Mind style is concerned with how a literary character perceives the fictional world and it can be studied through linguistic categories. In the case of To Kill a Mockingbird, the features of the narrator’s mind style can be observed in three main areas: lexical choices, particularly the use of complex and evaluative adjectives, adverbs and numerous different verbs of movement; a frequent use of epistemic modality; and in the type of cohesive devices. A detailed analysis of the first translation revealed consistent translation shifts on the microstructural level in all these categories. As a result, the narrator’s lexical repertoire seems to be less varied and more child-like, she conveys a higher degree of objectivity and certainty in her utterances because many epistemic modality markers are omitted, and she sounds more explicit and repetitive than the “same” narrator in the original. The cumulative effect of these translation shifts does not only alter the narrator’s perceptions of the fictional world, but also influences the target readers’ perception of the narrator. The analysis of mind styles in both Slovenian translations demonstrated that the second Slovenian translation remained much more faithful to the original in terms of rendering these features of mind style.

The examination of factors relating to the leadership style of nursing leaders in hospitals
Mateja Lorber, Sonja Treven, Damijan Mumel, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Theories often describe leadership with different classifications, based on personality and behaviour, and have been used to establish the traits and behaviours that determine an effective leadership style. We used the quantitative methodology to investigate the determinants of the leadership style among nursing leaders in Slovene hospitals. Based on the results, we determined that demographic characteristics such as gender, age, length of employment, and level of education do not affect the choice of the leadership style. Internal organizational characteristics such as job position, emotional intelligence, communication, personal characteristics, and the decision-making process are positively associated with the leadership style. Personal characteristics are considered important when it comes to using specific leadership styles, regardless of the choice of the leadership style, which also depends on the situation and external influences.
