Promoting Social Skills in Young Autistic Learners through Story Reading in Inclusive Settings : m. a. thesis
Tjaša Tomše, 2023, magistrsko delo

Opis: Using storybooks as a teaching tool has proved an effective teaching and learning technique that aids in developing and enhancing vocabulary, promotes reading and comprehension skills and even fosters social skills in learners with different needs and abilities. Developing and enhancing key social skills is all the more important for learners diagnosed with autism. Autistic learners experience deficits in social interaction and communication, struggle with fear of the unknown, have constant need for sameness, and might encounter sensory hypo- and hypersensitivities. Promoting social skills has been shown to significantly alleviate social difficulties in children with autism, and one of the successful social skills teaching and intervention methods for learners diagnosed with autism is – according to Amy Bohlander et al. and other researchers in the field – storybook reading. The theoretical part of the thesis aims at presenting key features of autistic behavior correlated with the neuroimaging findings on the irregular functioning of certain parts of the autistic brain; addressing effective inclusion strategies for teaching (young) autistic learners enrolled in general education settings, and discussing the characteristics that constitute a potentially appropriate storybook for use with young autistic learners in inclusive story reading lessons. The empirical part provides a descriptive analysis of ten storybooks, which offer a step-by-step guidance on how to cope with (a) socially challenging situation(s) and were not specifically adapted for learners with autism. The results of the storybook analysis have shown that the storybooks are mainly appropriate for promoting social skills in young autistic learners, whereby the number of storybooks classified as fully appropriate equals the number of partially appropriate items. However, to ensure a quality inclusive story reading experience that allows for effective, autism-friendly social skills teaching, the teacher or story reader needs to consider meeting the adaptation requirements for each storybook, irrespective of its classification, and identify the autistic individual´s unique set of weaknesses, enhanced abilities and (anti-)social behavior patterns prior to selecting a storybook for a group story reading.

The Use of Storybooks in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at Primary Level (2nd AND 3rd Grade) in Slovene Primary Schools : master thesis
Barbara Maher, 2022, magistrsko delo

Opis: This Master’s Thesis deals with the topic of teaching English as a foreign language to young language learners with the use of storybooks/a story-based approach. It has been produced with the intent to encourage and persuade English teachers of young language learners (in Slovenia) to introduce this approach to their early foreign language lessons, by offering a detailed overview of the advantages a story-based approach brings to the context of foreign language instruction, and to serve as a handbook, guiding them through the recommendations for the selection of appropriate storybooks, the preparation for storytelling/storyreading and its implementation, with additional emphasis on the importance of choosing and incorporating suitable story-related activities to each stage of the storytelling/reading act. Moreover, concerns teachers might have when first starting to use this approach, such as whether or not the learner's first language should be used in the story-based lessons, and how many times the same story can be presented to the learners, have been touched on, as well. Furthermore, the Master’s Thesis provides a selection of ready-to-use story-based lesson plans, prepared around chosen storybooks, all made to fit the goals/aims of foreign language instruction at primary level in the 2nd and 3rd grade in Slovene primary schools.

Modern Aspects of the Labyrinth in Literature
Klavdija Gredin, 2020, magistrsko delo

Opis: The purpose of this study is to define the labyrinth as a physical structure as well as analyse its symbolic use. I will determine, in my analysis of the works, the authors themselves, their other works and their lives, what the role of the labyrinth and whether we can find similaritie I included four works of different lengths in the research, including short stories and novel, which at first glance have only one thing in common - the labyrinth. I will determie, in my analysis of the works, the authors themselves, their other works and their lives, what the role of the labyrinth and whether we can find similarities in real life. In order to understand the meaning of the labyrinth we have to understand the meaning of certain terms and why did the labyrinth become so popular in the certain literature style, the magical realism. Although it was firstly associated in art it soon became used in literature in order to see everyday things in a magical, extraordinary way. The word labyrinth can be found in many civilisations all over the world, such as the Greeks, Romans, Scandinavians, Egyptians and so on. The meaning is not always the same. We cannot discuss the purpose of a labyrinth, if we do not explain the most known myth, the myth about the Minotaur. The symbolical meaning in the story of the Minotaur is clear, it represents a prison, but this is not the only meaning a labyrinth can have. Although one cannot be certain of the real purpose people build and draw labyrinths, we can speculate that they were made in order to protect certain people, capture the sun’s energy even to bring good weather, to be used in games and dances. Nowadays, it is a tool to help patients to heal spiritually and restore their wholeness. The meaning, in which we are the most interested is the symbolical meaning in literature. Considering all the analysed works and the acquired and analysed literature, I was able to determine that the labyrinth is used not only as a structure from which it is necessary to find a way, but also that it is enough, for the purposes of literature, if we get lost in it. It represents a tomb, where one can rest in peace. Making choices which way to take in a labyrinth is similar to making choices in our everyday life. An interesting fact is, that labyrinths were already found in literature in medieval manuscripts. Three classical authors stood out: Virgil, Ovid and Pliny the Elder. They defined the labyrinth for writers of modern day. The authors chosen in my work Jorge Luis Borges, J.K.Rowling, James Dashner and Guillermo del Toro included their ideas of the labyrinth and with a modern twist making it interesting to read and to explore several possibilities for the reader before one finishes the reading. They mixed the traditional with modern in order to get closer to everyday life, therefore the reader can identify himself with the main character, dream or escape from the reality. The selected works start with a description of the authors, following with the plot and last but not least analysed individually. Later on, the focus is on the labyrinth and his meaning in selected works. We can conclude that we, the readers are set on a journey as well as the characters in our selected works. The physical labyrinth in the work and the conceptual labyrinth intertwine and can confuse the reader, but just the right amount of facts are given in order to stay curious to keep reading. The authors made sure the reader can identify himself with the main character or better yet, they can feel his pain, try to solve the mystery with them and try to find the way out of the labyrinth not knowing that all labyrinths are not meant to be solved, not every way out of the labyrinth ends happily and that sometimes one just need to get lost in order to find a way out. The meaning of the labyrinth, therefore, has not significantly changed throughout the years. It has remained a symbol of admiration, for everyone, the creator, reader or walker.

The Modernized Characters of the Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood in Neil Gaiman's Picture Book The Wolves in the Walls
Silvija Kunst Berčič, 2016, diplomsko delo

Opis: The aim of this thesis is to investigate the influence of traditional fairy tales to contemporary stories for children and to compare their features. The thesis mainly focuses on the characters of Little Red Riding Hood and Lucy who is the protagonist in Gaiman’s picture book The wolves in the walls. Furthermore, the thesis discusses two Slovene variant versions of the fairy tale of Little Red Riding and deals with the issue of fear in modern stories. Another focus of interest are the stylistic devices which the author uses to increase and decrease the tension in the narrative. Since The Wolves in the Walls is a picture book, the thesis is interested in illustration and deals with the question how pictures and words act upon each other in this picture book.

Updating Romance: Women in Traditional Romance Fiction Vs Women in Contemporary Romance Fiction
Nina Košir, 2016, diplomsko delo

Opis: Romance fiction is one of the popular fiction genres. It focuses on the romantic relationship of two characters and it must have a satisfactory ending, the ‘happily-ever-after’. While the genre follows the familiar plot line, it has also depicted the current society and social norms. The graduation thesis is an insight on the historical development of romance fiction, the emergence of its subgenres, its popularity with readers and gradual acceptance by the critics. Considering that it is a genre mainly written for and by women, the thesis focuses on women readers and women characters. In order to present the similarities and difference between a Traditional Romance novel and a Contemporary Romance novel, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and the Austen Addicts series by Victoria Connelly are compared.

VIRTUALNA RADIJSKA NOVINARSKA REDAKCIJA
Milan Gačar, 2009, diplomsko delo

Opis: Osrednja tema diplomske naloge so sodobni postopki priprave radijskega informativnega programa.
