Effect of drying parameters on physiochemical and sensory properties of fruit powders processed by PGSS-, vacuum- and spray-drying

Opis: Aim of this experimental work was to investigate the possibility of producing fruit powders without employing drying aid and to investigate the effect of drying temperature on the final powder characteristics. Raw fruit materials (banana puree, strawberry puree and blueberry concentrate) were processed using three different drying techniques each opera- ting at different temperature conditions: vacuum-drying (–27–17 °C), spray-drying (130–160 °C) and PGSS-drying (112–152 °C). Moisture content, total colour difference, antioxidant activity and sensory characteristics of the proces- sed fruit powders were analysed. The results obtained from the experimental work indicate that investigated fruit pow- ders without or with minimal addition of maltodextrin can be produced. Additionally, it was observed that an increase in process temperature results in a higher loss of colour, reduced antioxidant activity and intensity of the flavour profile.

Experimental investigation review of biodiesel usage in bus diesel engine

Opis: This paper assembles and analyses extensive experimental research work conducted for several years in relation to biodiesel usage in a MAN bus Diesel engine with M injection system. At first the most important properties of the actually used neat rapeseed biodiesel fuel and its blends with mineral diesel are discussed and compared to that of mineral diesel. Then the injection, fuel spray, and engine characteristics for various considered fuel blends are compared at various ambient conditions, with special emphasis on the influence of low temperature on fueling. Furthermore, for each tested fuel the optimal injection pump timing is determined. The obtained optimal injection pump timings for individual fuels are then used to determine and discuss the most important injection and combustion characteristics, engine performance, as well as the emission, economy, and tribology characteristics of the engine at all modes of emission test cycles test. The results show that for each tested fuel it is possible to find the optimized injection pump timing, which enables acceptable engine characteristics at all modes of the emission test cycles test.

Programmable ultrasonic sensing system for targeted spraying in orchards

Opis: This research demonstrates the basic elements of a prototype automated orchard sprayer which delivers pesticide spray selectively with respect to the characteristics of the targets. The density of an apple tree canopy was detected by PROWAVE 400EP250 ultrasound sensors controlled by a Cypress PSOC CY8C29466 microcontroller. The ultrasound signal was processed with an embedded computer built around a LPC1343 microcontroller and fed in real time to electro-magnetic valves which open/close spraying nozzles in relation to the canopy structure. The analysis focuses on the detection of appropriate thresholds on 15 cm ultrasound bands, which correspond to maximal response to tree density, and this was selected for accurate spraying guidance. Evaluationof the system was performed in an apple orchard by detecting deposits of tartrazine dye (TD) on apple leaves. The employment of programmable microcontrollers and electro-magnetic valves decreased the amountof spray delivered by up to 48.15%. In contrast, the reduction of TD wasonly up to 37.7% at some positions within the tree crown and 65.1% in the gaps between trees. For all these reasons, this concept of precise orchard spraying can contribute to a reduction of costs and environmental pollution, while obtaining similar or even better leaf deposits.

Morphology, aggregation properties, cytocompatibility and anti-inflammatory potential of citrate-stabilized AuNPs prepared by modular Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis

Opis: Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis (USP) possesses a great potential for production of higher quantities of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), thus overcoming the problem of batch-to-batch variations in their properties. Recently, we demonstrated that USP with an additional evaporation chamber (modular USP) led to a better size control of AuNPs. However, their morphology, stability, toxicity, and immunomodulatory properties have not been investigated completely. Here, two types of spherical AuNPs were produced by using different USP parameters, followed by their stabilization in Na-citrate solution. No significant changes in their size, agglomeration, and -potential occurred 3 months after their initial production in citrate solution. However, the conditioning of AuNPs in serum-containing cell culture media for 24 h induced an increase in the AuNPs’ hydrodynamic size and a red shift in their Surface Plasmon Resonance, pointing to their instability in biological media. Cytocompatibility tests showed that the produced AuNPs were internalized by L929 cells and primary human monocytes and were not cytotoxic at the concentrations lower than 200 μg/mL, but they exhibited antiproliferative and anti-inflammatory effects, respectively. AuNPs reduced the percentage of CD14+CD16+ but not CD14lowCD16+ monocytes in vitro and reduced the expression of CD86, HLA-DR, TNF-α, and IL-12/IL-23 by these cells. These results indicate that the anti-inflammatory effects of citrate-capped AuNPs produced by modular USP could be beneficial for their application in the treatment of inflammatory conditions.

Synthesis of NiTi/Ni-TiO[sub]2 composite nanoparticles via ultrasonic spray pyrolysis

Opis: In this paper we present the production of NiTi/Ni-TiO2 composite nanoparticles via the synthesis method called ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP). The precursor solution for the synthesis of spherical NiTi particles was prepared from an orthodontic wire with a chemical composition of Ni (amount fraction x = 51.46 %) and Ti (x = 48.54 %). TEM microscopy, in combination with EDX analyses, was used for a detailed characterization of the obtained NiTi nanoparticles. The results showed the nanoparticle sizes ranging from 60 nm to 600 nm, depending on the parameters of the production procedure. This showed the versatility of the new USP synthesis procedure, proving its usefulness for different materials and applications.

Au-nanoparticle synthesis via ultrasonic spray pyrolysis with a separate evaporation zone

Opis: Some experiments were conducted in connection with the gold-nanoparticle production in an effort to produce a more accurate model for determining the gold-nanoparticle synthesis with a modified ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP). As previous experi- ments with gold nanoparticles yielded nanoparticles of various shapes (spherical, triangular, cylindrical, etc.), a focus on synthesizing only spherical nanoparticles is underway, as a mixture of different shapes is difficult to characterize and utilize. One of the factors for the particle formation is droplet evaporation. In an attempt to produce the optimum conditions for droplet evaporation with the solvent diffusion and precipitation, a separate furnace and a separate reaction-gas inlet were used. This modification separates the evaporation stage from the reaction stage, compared to the standard USP set-up. Using relatively low temperatures, from 60 °C up to 140 °C, for the evaporation stage provides for more time and better conditions for the diffusion of the solvent into the center of a droplet and a higher probability of forming a spherical particle.

Synthesis of Au nanoparticles prepared with ultrasonic spray pyrolysis and hydrogen reduction

Opis: Golden nanoparticles of different sizes and shapes (spherical, cylindrical, triangular and round) where prepared during a synthesis of gold with ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) and hydrogen reduction. The experimental investigations of the (USP) method were performed with an ultrasonic source of 0.8 MHz and 2.5 MHz, acting on the water solution of HAuCl4 forming aerosols with micron-sized and nanosized droplets. The results of the investigation show that the final shape and size of the Au particles depend on the characteristics of the solution and the frequency of the ultrasound. The second step of synthesizing the Au nanoparticles includes the subsequent thermal decomposition of the aerosol droplets in a hydrogen atmosphere between 260°C and 500°C. The investigations showed that the Au nanoparticles prepared in this way are smaller and more homogeneous.

Water sorption characteristics of a new type of gelatine powder, produced by a new high-pressure micronisation process

Opis: A new high-pressure micronisation process for Gelatine has been developed. By applying this process to gelatine, a new type of Gelatine was produced: Dry and pure Gelatine powder of high molecular mass. This powder was investigated,regarding its sorption behaviour and compared to its feedstock material. The feedstock Gelatine was of type B 200 Bloom, 6 mesh, having a molecular mass of 150,000 g $mol^{-1}$. The produced Gelatine powder's molecular mass was around 130,000 g $mol^{-1}$, while its mean particle size was 300 μm. Their sorption isotherms were investigated at 30 °C, 40 °C and 60 °C and water activities in the range from 0.055 to 0.836. At given water activities the Equilibrium Moisture Contents (EMC) decreases with increasing temperature.The measured sorption isotherms were fit with the Brunauer- Emmet-Teller (BET)- model and the Guggenheim- Anderson- deBoer (GAB)- model. Both models described the adsorption behaviour well in their range of validity, while only the GAB-model was adequate for describing the desorption behaviour. Hysteresis effect occurred in each adsorption-desorption pair. The isosteric heat of sorption of both substances was determined for adsorption, desorption respectively. Slight differences in the sorption behaviour occurred due to processing, while quality of the gelatine was not affected.
