Opis: The study material provides a comprehensive overview of health tourism as an important and rapidly developing segment of the tourism industry. It begins with a historical perspective, from ancient civilizations and pilgrimages to the democratization of spa culture, the rise of medical tourism, and today’s integrated approaches to health and wellness. The text defines key concepts such as health, illness, quality of life, happiness, well-being, and wellness, introducing models like the Wellness Wheel and PERMA. A central part of the material examines the relationship between well-being and tourism, highlighting how travel contributes to physical, psychological, and social health. Different types of health tourism are presented, particularly the distinction between medical and wellness tourism, supported by comparative models. Detailed chapters cover spas, wellness centres in hospitality, hot springs, and natural therapeutic waters, outlining their definitions, typologies, benefits, and contemporary applications. The material also discusses market segmentation in wellness tourism, identifying motives and profiles of tourists, as well as management aspects, including customer experience, site-level management, and broader geographical considerations. Special emphasis is given to stakeholder structures and their interactions, which shape the functioning of health tourism systems. Trends such as sustainability, digitalization, personalization, and the impact of COVID-19 are analysed as forces transforming the sector. Adapting the wellness offer in Slovenian spas to the new COVID-19 pandemic conditions*

Opis: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a markedly negative impact on global tourism and, on the other hand, has offered new opportunities for researchers to analyze the resilience of the tourism industry in such conditions. Recently, several scientific articles have emerged claiming that the COVID-19 pandemic could represent an opportunity for significant changes in tourism. This refers to changing practices at several levels and spreading new ethical principles. The pandemic has also made people aware of the importance of “well-being”. Even without a pandemic, wellness tourism has been one of the fastest-growing types of tourism in recent years. In all parts of the world, including Slovenia, natural spas have tried to adapt to new conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our analysis confirms that visitors to Slovenian spas strongly support introducing new/alternative activities and thus the dispersion of visitors to several locations. They showed the greatest interest in visiting nature in the vicinity of spas, which is also expected as a result of the closure during the pandemic. The purpose of our article is to give suggestions for offering alternative activities in Slovenian natural spas. However, adapting the wellness offer in spas should ensure that the basic traditional principles of wellness are maintained.

Spas as health literate organizations with a focus on educational value

Opis: This master thesis is focused on health literacy in health tourism settings. Health literacy is a concept connected to an individual’s responsibility to understand and act on health information in modern environments. Our assumption is that health tourism is one of the main stakeholders in processes of increasing health literacy levels in the population. For that reason, we questioned what level of health literacy the guests report and whether they recount any cases of improved health literacy during and after their visit. The main goal of the research was discovering whether Slovene health spas are organizations that promote health literacy and what steps they must take for future improvements. For the empirical research we conducted semi-structured interviews with previous guests of Slovene spas that have undertaken stationary rehabilitation due to various health concerns. The analysis method was qualitative content analysis by Philipp Mayring. The transcripts were coded with ATLAS.ti 8 software. The results indicate that guests gain useful information about how they should behave after rehabilitation in everyday life. This information is directly linked to increasing the health literacy of the patient as it is essential for successful rehabilitation and future behavior. The most common process in increasing health literacy levels are the lectures organized for the patients. The topics covered are a healthy diet, suitable exercise and sports, and common medical procedures. With these processes health resorts directly target the health literacy level of their patients.
