Time delays shape the eco‑evolutionary dynamics of cooperation

Opis: We study the intricate interplay between ecological and evolutionary processes through the lens of the prisoner’s dilemma game. But while previous studies on cooperation amongst selfsh individuals often assume instantaneous interactions, we take into consideration delays to investigate how these might afect the causes underlying prosocial behavior. Through analytical calculations and numerical simulations, we demonstrate that delays can lead to oscillations, and by incorporating also the ecological variable of altruistic free space and the evolutionary strategy of punishment, we explore how these factors impact population and community dynamics. Depending on the parameter values and the initial fraction of each strategy, the studied eco-evolutionary model can mimic a cyclic dominance system and even exhibit chaotic behavior, thereby highlighting the importance of complex dynamics for the efective management and conservation of ecological communities. Our research thus contributes to the broader understanding of group decision-making and the emergence of moral behavior in multidimensional social systems.

Challenges that need to be addressed before starting new emergency remote teaching at HEIs and proposed solutions

Opis: Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) aims to swiftly adapt conventional face-to-face educational methods to alternative (typically virtual) formats during crises. The recent COVID-19 pandemic accentuated the vulnerability of traditional educational systems, revealing limitations in their ability to effectively withstand such unprecedented events, thereby exposing shortcomings in the adopted ERT strategies. The goal of this study is to discuss the establishment of resilient, sustainable, and healthy educational systems in non-crisis times, which will enable teachers and students to make a smoother and less stressful transition to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) when necessary. A comprehensive hybrid approach, combining quantitative (interviews) and qualitative (online survey) methods has obtained data from 276 professors in 29 countries. These data have been used to identify a range of challenges related to ERT and their perceived level of difficulty. The methodological and social challenges (overshadowed by technical issues at the beginning of the crisis) identified in this research—such as the lack of personal contact or poor feedback from students—have been found to be the most demanding. From the collected insights regarding the perceived level of difficulty associated with the identified challenges, the present study aims to contribute to making higher education systems more robust in non-crisis times.

Integrating social dimensions into future sustainable energy supply networks

Opis: Environmental protection and sustainable development have become an inevitable trend in many areas, including the energy industry. The development of energy supply networks is strongly correlated with the economics of energy sources as well as ecological and socio-political issues. However, the energy supply network is often distant from the social perspective. This paper therefore combines examination of perceptions and awareness of general public (web-based questionnaire) and top energy experts (a Delphi survey) on the energy supply network and identifies their potential integration in energy supply decision making processes. The results showed that public should be better informed as well as integrated into designing energy supply network as the prosumers gain power and the energy suppliers will no longer dominate the market. Public actors are ready to shape sustainable energy supply and also willing to pay 5.8% more for a sustainable energy supply. The majority are prepared to invest in renewable energy supply network close to their place of residence. Another result is that the public is calling for a shift in priority towards more sustainable and socially friendlier energy supply rather than focusing mainly on the economic and technical perspectives.

Physical health conditions and political participation in Europe : the moderating efects of age

Opis: Unequal political participation is widely considered a problem of democratic representation. Citizens with fewer resources typically report lower levels of participation. Lack of good health has been identifed as one barrier to participation. However, poor health may have heterogeneous impacts on participation, depending on the type of health issue. Moreover, poor health may afect participation patterns differently, depending on age. Previous research has not yet systematically examined these issues. We address these gaps by using European Social Survey data, which includes self-reports of a variety of physical health conditions and engagement in diferent forms of political participation. The results show that most physical health conditions are related to political participation; however, except for turnout, physical health problems mobilize individuals into action. This efect is strongest among younger individuals, and the health gap in participation evens out in later life. The condition-specifc efects are similar across diferent forms of physical health conditions. Our fndings are consistent with the grievance and identity theories of political participation. Younger citizens, in particular, may experience poor health or physical impairment as unjust and are then mobilized into political action. We discuss the implications for the broader understanding of mechanisms behind political behavior and suggest that health problems are often a motivator for political action rather than an obstacle.

Role of tourism in promoting geothermal energy : public interest and motivation for geothermal energy tourism in Slovenia

Opis: From household geothermal heat pumps to industrial geothermal heating and electricity production, geothermal energy is one of the most promising future climate change mitigation areas. This paper aims to analyse the potential role that the tourism industry has in the promotion of geothermal energy. Although general knowledge and understanding of geothermal energy is often relatively low, geothermal energy tourism has the potential to encourage the public to use and learn about geothermal energy and its applications. The paper first provides a theoretical conceptualisation of geothermal energy tourism at the energy production level and energy usage level. Empirical results from an online survey amongst a sample of the Slovenian population show that there is a reasonably strong interest in geothermal energy tourism, correlating with the public image of geothermal energy. The study furthermore identified three main motivational factors for energy tourism: the first is "Knowledge," followed by "Having fun," with the lowest level on the motivational factor being "Self-recognition." The paper finally provides future recommendations on geothermal energy tourism as a tool for wider public acceptance but also knowledge on the potential risks of geothermal energy as a sustainable energy source.

The Influence of English on the Language of Croatian Influencers on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok Social Media : master's thesis

Opis: The rapid spread of the English language, which is frequently referred to as a lingua franca, has had a significant impact on other languages and the peculiar language of computer-mediated communication. What is more, the Internet, social media and digital influencers are the key agents of both language change and changes in the modern society. Due to the globally growing popularity of social media influencers, the purpose of this thesis is to explore the ways in which their language use is affected by the globality of English, with a focus on Croatian influencers. Therefore, data for this paper are drawn from altogether 270 social media posts published by the eight most successful Croatian influencers on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. The research methods include linguistic, thematic and content analysis. The results reveal that the use of ‘ad hoc loanwords’ and intra-sentential code-switching are more common among Croatian influencers in comparison with outdated Anglicisms and inter-sentential code-switching. While the most frequently used loanwords among Croatian influencers belong to the categories of cyberculture and popular culture, the use of loanwords belonging to particular semantic fields is not strongly related to their thematic content categories. The importance and originality of this thesis are that it is the first study to provide new insights into the language use of Croatian influencers in relation with English as a global and leading online language. However, due to practical constraints, it is limited in terms of the research sample size and generalizability, which offers implications for further research.

Promoting Social Skills in Young Autistic Learners through Story Reading in Inclusive Settings : m. a. thesis

Opis: Using storybooks as a teaching tool has proved an effective teaching and learning technique that aids in developing and enhancing vocabulary, promotes reading and comprehension skills and even fosters social skills in learners with different needs and abilities. Developing and enhancing key social skills is all the more important for learners diagnosed with autism. Autistic learners experience deficits in social interaction and communication, struggle with fear of the unknown, have constant need for sameness, and might encounter sensory hypo- and hypersensitivities. Promoting social skills has been shown to significantly alleviate social difficulties in children with autism, and one of the successful social skills teaching and intervention methods for learners diagnosed with autism is – according to Amy Bohlander et al. and other researchers in the field – storybook reading. The theoretical part of the thesis aims at presenting key features of autistic behavior correlated with the neuroimaging findings on the irregular functioning of certain parts of the autistic brain; addressing effective inclusion strategies for teaching (young) autistic learners enrolled in general education settings, and discussing the characteristics that constitute a potentially appropriate storybook for use with young autistic learners in inclusive story reading lessons. The empirical part provides a descriptive analysis of ten storybooks, which offer a step-by-step guidance on how to cope with (a) socially challenging situation(s) and were not specifically adapted for learners with autism. The results of the storybook analysis have shown that the storybooks are mainly appropriate for promoting social skills in young autistic learners, whereby the number of storybooks classified as fully appropriate equals the number of partially appropriate items. However, to ensure a quality inclusive story reading experience that allows for effective, autism-friendly social skills teaching, the teacher or story reader needs to consider meeting the adaptation requirements for each storybook, irrespective of its classification, and identify the autistic individual´s unique set of weaknesses, enhanced abilities and (anti-)social behavior patterns prior to selecting a storybook for a group story reading.

Instagram in Tiktok kot orodji marketinškega komuniciranja blagovnih znamk z ženskimi športnimi oblačili

Opis: Družbeni omrežji Instagram in TIkTok sta v zadnjih nekaj letih, zaradi vse večje digitalizacije sveta, postali nadvse priljubljeni in vse pogosteje uporabljeni spletni platformi. Ker je število dnevnih aktivnih uporabnikov iz dneva v dan naraščalo so podjetja in blagovne znamke pričele opažati izjemen potencial v uporabnosti Instagram-a in TikTok-a tudi za poslovne namene – med drugimi dokaj enostaven in učinkovit način doseganja željene ciljne skupine z minimalnimi finančnimi vložki, možnost aktivnega spremljanja odzivov, potreb ter želja posameznikov in posameznic, prilagajanje vsebin glede na demografske dejavnike ciljnih skupin itd. V okviru našega magistrskega dela smo se skladno z izbrano tematiko poglobili v svet ženskih športnih oblačil in skozi teoretični in praktični del raziskali uporabnost Instagram-a in TikTok-a kot orodji marketinškega komuniciranja blagovnih znamk z ženskimi športnimi oblačili. V teoretičnem delu smo najprej predstavili temeljna izhodišča in pojme, nato pa smo se v osrednjem delu osredotočili na podrobno predstavitev, opredelitev in analizo posamičnega družbenega omrežja, kjer smo definirali prednosti in slabosti ter navedli in opisali različne načine, ki jih blagovne znamke z ženskimi športnimi oblačili lahko izkoristijo za namene učinkovitega marketinškega komuniciranja z izbrano ciljno skupino. Z namenom pridobitve resničnih in verodostojnih informacij iz prakse smo tekom zaključnega dela oblikovali tudi strukturiran anketi vprašalnik, s pomočjo katerega smo v prvi vrsti podkrepili teoretični del, in nadalje, na podlagi prejetih rezultatov potrdili oz. zavrnili zastavljene hipoteze.

Opis: In the midst of industries being reshaped by the emergence of technologies our attention is drawn to the increasing trend of AI and its potential integration, in the work environment. At present, we recognise the swift evolution of technology and the necessity to align with current trends. In this thesis we delve into the world of content creation in tourism social media marketing. We specifically focus on how AI tools, like ChatGPT transform the way we generate content across social media platforms. Through the thesis we highlight the importance of content marketing in boosting brand visibility and engagement. We further explore how generative AI models can create content, enhance personalization and streamline marketing strategies. Additionally, we investigate the newly emerging field of prompt engineering, which focuses on improved interactions with generative AI models. While AI tools offer efficiency, we emphasize the need to strike a balance between automation and human driven creativity. In the evolving landscape of digital marketing, this study contributes insights into leveraging AI-powered content creation for enriching the tourism industry's social media endeavours.
