Treatment of occupational health risks in criminal prosecution of abuse of prostitution in Slovenia
Neža Kogovšek Šalamon, Tjaša Učakar, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The paper explores how occupational and health rights of sex workers are dealt with by courts in criminal proceedings related to the crime of abuse of prostitution under Article 175 of the Slovenian Criminal Code. The authors find that judicial decisions on the crime of abuse of prostitution invariably include considerations regarding occupational health risks, access to health care, and the health rights of sex workers. The paper builds upon the authors’ previous research publications, where they established that in Slovenia, while the restrictive approach to dealing with prostitution prevails, elements of both repressive and integrative approaches are present. Stressing the health rights of sex workers constitutes an integrative approach to prostitution.

Suckling behaviour of piglets affected by body weight and sex
Martina Dobaj Gomboc, Janko Skok, Dejan Škorjanc, Maja Prevolnik Povše, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Piglet suckling behaviour has been extensively studied, but surprisingly, there are not many studies that specifically consider body weight and sex in this context. These two basic individual characteristics have been considered more as supporting data but not as main factors. Therefore, the objective of the present research was to examine the effect body weight on suckling behaviour of piglets during lactation separately by sex. The study comprised 14 litters with a total of 158 piglets (85 male, 73 female, litter size 6−15 piglets). Suckling behaviour was described in terms of suckling position (the teat at which the piglet suckled during suckling), suckling territory (the range two outermost suckling positions of the piglet encompasses) and suckling stability (the tendency to suckle successively at the same position), and was observed in six periods: 0−3, 4−7, 8−10, 11−14, 15−21 and 22−32 days of age. In each period, piglets were also weighed. The udder was divided into three areas: anterior (1st-2nd teat pair), middle (3rd-5th teat pair) and posterior (6th-8th teat pair). Body weight affected suckling behaviour differently in male and female piglets (i.e., all traits in females, suckling stability only in males). The relative body weight of females decreased significantly from the anterior towards the posterior part. Heavy females (but not males) suckled considerably more frequently on the anterior area. Heavier piglets (male and female) established more stable suckling order. Suckling territory of males was quite large, but did not differ among body weight classes. Interestingly, light females visited significantly larger suckling territory than heavy females. The present results fill a gap in the otherwise broad knowledge of pig suckling behaviour, which is of great importance for litter management during lactation, especially when cross-fostering is implemented. In this context, knowledge of the detailed role of sex and body weight is of particular importance because breeders rely mainly on basic body traits when managing litters.

Pre-conception nutrition estimated from milk composition characterises the sex ratio of offspring in cattle
Janez Belšak, Janez Jeretina, Maja Prevolnik Povše, Dejan Škorjanc, Janko Skok, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In livestock breeding, offspring of a particular sex are often favoured. Various biological mechanisms influence the offspring sex ratio (OSR). It has been hypothesised that maternal bodycondition/nutritional status influence OSR. We analysed the relationship between the nutritional status of the cow and OSR. The analysed dataset contained 40,913 milk recordings of 39,192 cows from 3625 farms. Nutritional status was estimated based on the fat-to-protein (F:P) ratio and urea content in milk in the seven to fourteen days prior to conception. Somatic cell count (SCC) was also considered. Cows with > 150,000 SSC were analysed separately. When SSC was normal (≤150,000), high urea with high F:P resulted in a higher probability of male offspring (61 %), with OSR significantly deviating towards male (1.47). Conversely, a high urea level and low F:P resulted in a higher probability of female offspring (57 %), with OSR significantly in favour of females (0.79). At normal or low milk urea, the sex of the offspring did not change within F:P classes. The sex ratio did not deviate from 1:1 when F:P and urea were in the normal range. When SCC was high, the probability of particular sex did not change significantly in either combination of F:P and urea, but OSR showed a tendency toward males (OSR>1) when F:P and urea were low or normal. Our results confirmed the influence of maternal nutritional status on the offspring sex. Thus, adjusting nutrition in the pre-insemination period seems to be a way to influence the sex ratio of offspring in dairy cows.

Disaggregated data on age and sex for the first 250 days of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bucharest, Romania
Marian-Gabriel Hâncean, Maria Cristina Ghiţǎ, Matjaž Perc, Jürgen Lerner, Iulian Oană, Bianca-Elena Mihǎilǎ, Adelina Alexandra Stoica, David-Andrei Bunaciu, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Experts worldwide have constantly been calling for high-quality open-access epidemiological data, given the fast-evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disaggregated high-level granularity records are still scant despite being essential to corroborate the effectiveness of virus containment measures and even vaccination strategies. We provide a complete dataset containing disaggregated epidemiological information about all the COVID-19 patients officially reported during the first 250 days of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bucharest (Romania). We give the sex, age, and the COVID-19 infection confirmation date for 46.440 individual cases, between March 7th and November 11th, 2020. Additionally, we provide context-wise information such as the stringency levels of the measures taken by the Romanian authorities. We procured the data from the local public health authorities and systemized it to respond to the urgent international need of comparing observational data collected from various populations. Our dataset may help understand COVID-19 transmission in highly dense urban communities, perform virus spreading simulations, ascertain the effects of non-pharmaceutical interventions, and craft better vaccination strategies.

Factors of hospital mortality in men and women with ST-elevation myocardial infarction - an observational, retrospective, single centre study
Martin Marinšek, David Šuran, Andreja Sinkovič, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: There are well-known gender differences in mortality of patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Our purpose was to assess factors of hospital mortality separately for men and women with STEMI, which are less well known. Patients and Methods: In 2018– 2019, 485 men and 214 women with STEMI underwent treatment with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We retrospectively compared baseline characteristics, treatments and hospital complications between men and women, as well as between nonsurviving and surviving men and women with STEMI. Results: Primary PCI was performed in 94% of men and 91.1% of women with STEMI, respectively. The in-hospital mortality was significantly higher in women than in men (14% vs 8%, p=0.019). Hospital mortality in both genders was associated significantly to older age, heart failure, prior resuscitation, acute kidney injury, to less likely performed and less successful primary PCI and additionally in men to hospital infection and in women to bleeding. In men and women ≥ 65 years, mortality was similar (13.3% vs 17.8%, p = 0.293). Conclusion: Factors of hospital mortality were similar in men and women with STEMI, except bleeding was more likely observed in nonsurviving women and infection in nonsurviving men.

Representation of gender through visual imagery in primary school English textbooks from Slovene and English publishers : master's thesis
Elin Kamenšek Krajnc, 2022, magistrsko delo

Opis: Textbooks are the foundation for teaching. Even though the use of interactive online materials is increasing, most teachers base their lessons on printed materials, most frequently textbooks, since these offer well-structured, organized and ready-made materials. However, textbooks also include cultural beliefs and values that impact children’s perception of the world and themselves. This thesis focuses on how textbooks present gender through visual imagery and what message they deliver to developing young individuals that rely on school and textbooks to provide models they can follow. The research is based on a comparison of 8 textbooks – Slovene publisher’s textbooks and those published by English publishing houses – concerning their use of stereotypical and sexist illustrations. We provide a theoretical background to the problem and highlight the importance of school and textbooks for forming gender identity. The empirical part of the thesis offers a descriptive analysis supported by feature coding and shows whether the attempts to eliminate gender differences in the classroom have been successful.

Could sex/gender differences in ACE2 expression in the lungs contribute to the large gender disparity in the morbidity and mortality of patients infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus?
Gregor Majdič, 2020, drugi znanstveni članki

Opis: COVID-19 morbidity and mortality have significant gender disparities, with higher prevalence and mortality in men. SARS-CoV-2 enters the lungs through the ACE2 enzyme, a member of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). Although there are no data for the lung, the expressions of RAS components in other tissues are modulated by sex hormones, androgens, and estrogens. However, there are no data on sex-specific differences in ACE2 expression. If there is a sex difference in the expression of ACE2 in the lung, this could theoretically explain the gender disparity in COVID-19 disease. More importantly, although modulation of ACE2 will certainly not provide a cure for the COVID-19 disease, modulation of ACE2 by sex hormone modulators, if they affect the expression of ACE2, could potentially be developed into a supportive therapy for COVID-19 patients.

Robust sex differences in jigsaw puzzle solving : are boys really better in most visuospatial tasks?
Vid Kocijan, Marina Horvat, Gregor Majdič, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Sex differences are consistently reported in different visuospatial tasks with men usually performing better in mental rotation tests while women are better on tests for memory of object locations. In the present study, we investigated sex differences in solving jigsaw puzzles in children. In total 22 boys and 24 girls were tested using custom build tablet application representing a jigsaw puzzle consisting of 25 pieces and featuring three different pictures. Girls outperformed boys in solving jigsaw puzzles regardless of the picture. Girls were faster than boys in solving the puzzle, made less incorrect moves with the pieces of the puzzle, and spent less time moving the pieces around the tablet. It appears that the strategy of solving the jigsaw puzzle was the main factor affecting differences in success, as girls tend to solve the puzzle more systematically while boys performed more trial and error attempts, thus having more incorrect moves with the puzzle pieces. Results of this study suggest a very robust sex difference in solving the jigsaw puzzle with girls outperforming boys by a large margin.
