Interdependence of nursing staff work engagement, quality of workplace relationships and patient safety
Hilda Maze, Sanja Zorić, Bojan Rosi, Branko Lobnikar, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background and Purpose: Quality within a healthcare system does not comprise only actions defined through certificates or required by law, standards and protocols; it is also defined by the well-being of healthcare workers on the one hand and patients on the other. The purpose paper is to analyse the link between the engagement of nurses and factors related to enhancing patient quality and safety. Methods: The research involved 206 nursing employees from Slovenia’s general hospitals. The questionnaire con-sists of four sections: employee engagement, the measure of self-efficacy, statements referring to various tools and methods that are used in nursing in daily work and that contribute to the quality of work, interpersonal relationships in the workplace between different professional groups within medical treatment, and attitude towards changes. Results: Compared to other professions, nursing employees showed an above-average level of engagement. Younger respondents were more engaged in their work, and their self-efficacy level was higher. The frequency of using tools intended to enhance the quality of nursing correlates statistically typically and positively with self-effica-cy, engagement and willingness to accept change. The analysed factors are interdependent. Engagement results from workplace interactions; employees who feel better in their workplace will be more oriented towards the future, be more open to innovation, and use various tools and approaches to enhance the work’s quality. Conclusion: Analysed concepts are closely connected and interdependent. The findings are essential for the suc-cessful and efficient management of hospitals and for ensuring patient quality and safety.

Implementation of sustained silent reading at a Slovene grammar school : attitudes, outcomes, tools and materials
Karel Šipec, 2025, magistrsko delo

Opis: This master’s thesis examines the implementation of Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) in a Slovenian grammar school, focusing on student perceptions, effectiveness, tools, and material preferences in English (EFL) and German (GFL) classes. Over three weeks, 41 students participated in SSR, with their responses showing strong enjoyment (70% EFL, 60% GFL) but differing views on efficacy, where GFL students reported greater improvements. While SSR had a limited impact on home reading habits and attitude towards reading, smartphones significantly aided comprehension in GFL but distracted EFL learners. Students preferred physical books, particularly paperbacks, and genres like romance and crime. The findings emphasize that SSR was well-received in the new setting but requires much adaptation based on proficiency levels.

Umut Arioz, Urška Smrke, Valentino Šafran, Maja Ravnik, Matej Horvat, Vojko Flis, Izidor Mlakar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Cancer survivors face numerous challenges, and digital health interventions can empower them by enhancing self-efficacy and patient activation. This prospective study aimed to assess the impact of a mHealth app on self-efficacy and patient activation in 166 breast and colorectal cancer survivors. Participants received a smart bracelet and used the app to access personalized care plans. Data were collected at baseline and follow-ups, including patient-reported outcomes and clinician feedback. The study demonstrated positive impacts on self-efficacy and patient activation. The overall trial retention rate was 75.3%. Participants reported high levels of activation (PAM levels 1–3: P = 1.0; level 4: P = 0.65) and expressed a willingness to stay informed about their disease (CASE-Cancer factor 1: P = 0.98; factor 2: P = 0.66; factor 3: P = 0.25). Usability of the app improved, with an increase in participants rating the system as having excellent usability (from 14.82% to 22.22%). Additional qualitative analysis revealed positive experiences from both patients and clinicians. This paper contributes significantly to cancer survivorship care by providing personalized care plans tailored to individual needs. The PERSIST platform shows promise in improving patient outcomes and enhancing self-management abilities in cancer survivors. Further research with larger and more diverse populations is needed to establish its effectiveness.

Long-term control of hedge bindweed (Calystegia sepium L.) with single, tank mixture, and sequential applications of glyphosate, 2,4-D, and dicamba
Aleš Kolmanič, Robert Leskovšek, Mario Lešnik, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Hedge bindweed (Calystegia sepium L.) is a widespread troublesome perennial weed species that has strong rhizome regenerative capacity. Four pot trials with randomised, complete block designs were conducted in 2015 to evaluate long-term control of hedge bindweed using individual, tank mixture, and sequential applications of selected herbicides. Two different formulations of N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine (glyphosate; isopropylamine, trimesium salts) were applied at 2000 g active ingredient (a.i.) ha−1. Additionally, two synthetic auxins were applied as 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid (dicamba) at 500 g a.i. ha−1 and the dimethylamine salt of (2,4 dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid (2,4-D) at 1000 g a.i. ha−1. Tank mixtures and sequential applications (12/24 h separation) of these different herbicides were also included. Long-term control of hedge bindweed, Calystegia sepium L., growth was evaluated 8 months after treatments, as comparisons of shoot and rhizome growth (biomass) between untreated and treated plants. There were no differences between the two formulations of glyphosate alone, with shoot and rhizome biomass reductions of 83% and 42%, respectively. Dicamba alone inhibited shoot and rhizome biomass by 86% and 67%, respectively. By itself, 2,4-D provided the greatest reductions in shoot and rhizome biomasses, 93% and 79%, respectively. Antagonism was seen in the tank mixtures of glyphosate and dicamba or 2,4-D. Tank mixtures were generally comparable to treatments of glyphosate alone, and were less effective compared to dicamba or 2,4-D alone. The greatest reduction of bindweed rhizome biomass was for sequential glyphosate trimesium salt followed by 2,4-D 12 h later, thus showing significantly greater efficacy over glyphosate isopropylamine salt (94% vs. 84%; p ≤ 0.05). These data for reductions of the growth of the rhizome biomass show that the sequential application of glyphosate followed by 2,4-D significantly improves long-term control of hedge bindweed.

Predictive power of biology teacher's self-efficacy on acceptability and application of virtual and hands-on dissections
Veronika Havlíčková, Andrej Šorgo, Martin Bilék, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Hands-on dissections of animals are traditionally regarded as an essential part of biology education. Nowadays, regardless of the reported educational benefits, there is a gradual change in the concept and acceptance of hands-on dissection, leading in many cases to its abandonment in schools and its replacement with alternatives such as 3D models, figurines, plastination and computer-based alternatives. However, the position of hands-on dissection has recently been challenged, mostly by computer-supported alternatives. The aim of the study was to explore whether teacher self-efficacy can be recognized as a predictor of the application of the different kinds of animals in hands-on and virtual dissections in Biology lessons. Based on responses from 405 Czech Biology teachers there are differences in the acceptability and implementation of organisms for hands-on and virtual dissection. It was established, that self-efficacy is not a predictor of either the acceptability of organisms or actual behaviour in both variants of dissection.

How to strengthen employee engagement among Slovenian criminal investigators?
David Smolej, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: In terms of providing security, employee engagement may be defined as an important contribution by individual criminal investigators or their physical, cognitive and emotional dedication to their work. Employee engagement positively correlates with one’s work, as reflected in the dedication, absorption, and psychological state accompanied by personal energy invested in the work. A fundamental question for the criminal investigation police thus arises of how to achieve maximum engagement and commitment in police work, which in turn will contribute to greater security in Slovenia. Design/Methods/Approach: The article is based on empirical research conducted among 160 Slovenian criminal investigators. We used Gallup’s Q12 Employee Engagement Survey to measure employee engagement. Findings: The research encompassing 160 Slovenian criminal investigators shows that most criminal investigators are disengaged. The research also reveals that employee engagement is statistically significantly correlated with self-efficacy, social undermining by one’s supervisor, social support by one’s supervisor and colleagues, as well as cynicism. To raise employee engagement among the Slovenian criminal investigators, we propose several measures affecting the conduct of the police, labour legal matters, operational issues and the leadership. Research Limitations / Implications: The first limitation is social desirability bias. The second limitation is a labour strike that was underway while we were collecting the data from the police officers. Practical Implications: The proposed actions should raise the level of employee engagement of Slovenian criminal investigators, while also enhancing the police service’s reliability. Originality/Value: This is the first paper to research employee engagement among Slovenian criminal investigators.

Nanoliposome encapsulation with donkey milk bioactive proteins and its possible application in dermatology and cosmetics
Hristina Kocić, Milica Stanković, Ivana Arsić, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Nanoliposomes represent natural or synthetic nanoparticles made of phospholipids, which may spontaneously aggregate in an aqueous medium. Their use in dermatology and for cosmetic purposes may offer facilitated delivery in skin via enhanced opening of the tight junctions between the epithelial cell monolayers. As far as their use in dermatology is concerned, both transdermal and local application may offer successful release profile. Donkey milk may have special therapeutic properties when used in cosmetology for skin treatment. The aim of our study was to establish encapsulation efficacy of nanoliposome loaded with skimmed donkey milk and to explore the efficiency of encapsulation of different skimmed donkey milk concentrations in nanoliposomes. In our experimental study, it was documented that 1%, 2% and 5% solutions of skimmed donkey milk were almost equally effectively encapsulated, more than 80% in 1% solution of nanoliposomes, while 10% solution of skimmed donkey milk was encapsulated more efficiently, with 88.9% in 1% of nanoliposome solution. Encapsulation can lead to greater efficiency by enabling the use of lower administration doses and preventing the corresponding side effects, which may be the result of higher doses. Skimmed donkey milk is a suitable encapsulation solution.

The social acceptance of secondary school students with learning disabilities (LD)
Teja Majcen, Majda Schmidt, Karin Bakračevič, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper aims to shed light on the level of social acceptance among students with learning disabilities (LD4 ) in various secondary school vocational programs in comparison with their peers without disabilities. Our findings are based on an empirical study that comprised 417 students, 5 of whom 85 were students with LD. Based on sociometric analyses of all participating classes, we determined that students with LD were less integrated into the classroom in comparison to their peers without LD. The results of the sociometric analysis show statistically significant differences in the sociometric position between students with LD and students without LD. While students with LD were most frequently perceived as rejected, students without LD were seen as popular or average. In addition, students with LD see themselves as less socially self-efficient compared to their peers. The results of our study mostly refer to boys, because the sample comprised 359 boys and 58 girls. We believe that pro-inclusion teachers with appropriately developed strategies for strengthening students' social skills, as well as positive attitudes and sufficient knowledge about the special needs of students can have a significant impact on the social acceptance of students with special needs in the classroom community.

Relation between entrepreneurial curiosity and entrepreneurial self-efficacy : a multi-country empirical validation
Mitja Jeraj, Miha Marič, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The main purpose of this paper is to present empirical analysis of the relation between entrepreneurial curiosity and entrepreneurial self-efficacy. A detailed literature review in a broad field of entrepreneurship, narrow field of entrepreneurship psychology, and organizational sciences revealed, at one hand different connections between determinants influencing entrepreneurs, and latest scientific research trends on the other hand. Although the significance of curiosity in motivating and learning has received expressive scholarly support, like also entrepreneurial self-efficacy as one of the most studied personal attributes among entrepreneurs, no study to our knowledge existed in relation to entrepreneurial curiosity connected with entrepreneurial self-efficacy. An online multi-country survey was conducted in Slovenia and USA among entrepreneurs and results of structural equation modelling showed that entrepreneurial curiosity and entrepreneurial self-efficacy are related. Entrepreneurial curiosity has a positive impact on entrepreneurial self-efficacy of running entrepreneurial tasks. The findings of this research have both theoretical and practical implications.
