Unobtrusive monitoring of human vital functions based on speckle interferometry with plastic optical fiber
Dejan Lešnik, Peter Podbreznik, Boris Cigale, Damjan Zazula, Denis Ðonlagić, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In this paper, a speckle interferometer with a plastic optical fiber system is reported for unobtrusive monitoring of heartbeat and respiration. The sensor consists of a laser diode butt-coupled to the plastic optical fiber, whose exit face projects speckle patterns onto a linear optical sensor array, which leads to a simple and cost-effective construction. Speckle images are acquired in a sequence and transformed into a 1D signal by using a phase-shifting method. Band-pass filtering and Morlet-wavelet-based multiresolutional approaches were used to analyze signals for the detection of cardiac and respiratory activities, respectively. Ten young, healthy persons participated in system testing, by lying supine on a mattress with embedded plastic optical fiber. Experimental results show the proposed system and detection algorithms are highly efficient. Sensitivities of 99.4 0.6% and 95.3 3%, precisions of 98.8 1.5% and 97.9 2.3%, and mean delays between interferometric detections and corresponding referential signals of 116.6 55.5ms and 1299.2 437.3 ms were computed for heartbeat and respiration, respectively.

Contribution of non-troglobiotic terrestrial invertebrates to carbon input in hypogean habitats
Franc Janžekovič, Tone Novak, Saška Lipovšek Delakorda, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Eleven of the most important terrestrial invertebrate species in Slovenian caves were analyzed for differences in their fresh and dry biomass, energy content and carbon bulk during winter. These data were combined with the species abundance in 54 caves and adits in order to estimate their organic carbon bulk and carbon input into these habitats. In Central European caves, Troglophilus cavicola, T. neglectus, Faustina illyrica, Amilenus aurantiacus and Scoliopteryx libatrix are the most important vectors of carbon between the epigean and hypogean habitats. In contrast to the general assumption, carbon total contribution to caves via dead bodies is only 0.15% of total migratory biomass, and it is not directly available to troglobionts because of infection with entomopathogenic fungi. In winter, together with predated migratory specimens, carbon input does not exceed 0.3% of the total migratory biomass. This situation should be carefully examined in every karstic region inhabited by distinctive fauna.

Regulation of metabolic changes in shredded cabbage by modified atmosphere packaging
Andrej Plestenjak, Tomaž Požrl, Janez Hribar, Tatjana Unuk, Rajko Vidrih, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The influence of different storage conditions on the storability of packaged shredded cabbage has been studied. The cabbage cultivar Fieldrocket was cut and packaged in glass jars and in polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) film. Several initial atmospheres were established within the packaged cut cabbage: 100 % N2, 5 % O2/95 % N2, 10 % O2/90 % N2, normal atmosphere (NA), 70 % O2/30 % N2 and 100 % O2. Samples were stored at two different temperatures of 0 and 10 °C for 7 days. Variation in CO2 and O2 concentrations was higher at 10 °C compared to 0 °C and the highest at the atmosphere consisting of 70 % O2/30 % N2. A decrease of O2 below 3–5 % and an increase of CO2 above 2–5 % in the packed product resulted in the appearance of anaerobic metabolism. An initial atmosphere consisting of 100 % O2, and a storage temperature of 0 °C resulted in delayed anaerobic metabolism compared to other atmospheric conditions and storage temperature of 10 °C. Rinsing of fresh cut cabbage also resulted in lower accumulation of acetaldehyde and ethanol. A higher variation in CO2 and O2 concentrations, and consequent accumulation of anaerobic metabolites had a negative influence on the sensorial properties of the cut cabbage. The higher permeability of PE film compared to PP and glass enabled faster exchange of CO2 and O2, which resulted in lower accumulation of anaerobic metabolites. However, a higher O2 concentration had a negative influence on the colour of fresh-cut cabbage. The best results were achieved by packing the fresh-cut cabbage in PE film with an initial atmosphere of 100 % O2 and stored at 0 °C.
