Enhanced photothermal based-heat retention in regenerated cellulose fibers via ceramic particles and polyelectrolyte binders-based surface functionalization
Özkan Yapar, Ajra Hadela, Alenka Ojstršek, Aleksandra Lobnik, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: : There has been growing interest and increasing attention in the field of functional clothing textiles, particularly in product and process development, as well as innovations in heat-generating, retaining, and releasing fibers to maintain a healthy body temperature without relying on unsustainable energy sources. This study, for the first time, reports the various physio-mechanical properties of surface-functionalized regenerated cellulose fibers (RCFs) coated with ceramic particles. The coating imparts photothermal conversion-based heat generation and retention properties with the aid of polyelectrolyte binders. In this design, ZrC enables the conversion of light energy into thermal energy, providing heat for the human body. A feasible coating process was employed, utilizing industrially feasible exhaustion methods to deposit the ZrC particles onto the RCF surface in conjunction with two distinctive polymeric binders, specifically polyethyleneimine (PEI) and polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (polyDADMAC). The morphological characteristics and tensile properties of the coated RCFs were analyzed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and single-fiber tensile testing. Heat retention and release behaviors of a bundle of fiber samples were assessed using infrared (IR) imaging and an IR emission lamp setup. The SEM results confirmed the successful coating of the ZrC particles on the surface of the RCF samples, influencing negligible on their physical–mechanical properties. The heat retention of the coated RCFs with ZrC and both binders was higher than that of reference regenerated cellulose fibers (RCFs), demonstrating their effective heat generation, retention, and heat release properties. Based on the highlighted prominent results for the coated RCFs, these findings highlight the suitability of the developed functional clothing textiles for targeted applications in non-extreme thermal conditions, ensuring thermo-physiological comfort by maintaining body temperature within a tolerable thermal range (36.5–37.5 ◦C), in contrast to studies reporting significantly higher temperatures (50–78 ◦C) for extreme thermal conditions.

Hydrophilic/hydrophobic characteristics of different cellulose fibres monitored by tensiometry
Zdenka Peršin Fratnik, Karin Stana-Kleinschek, Tatjana Kreže, 2002, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Wettability and sorptivity improvements for different textile materials are the major tasks during textile finishing. In order to improve the sorption characteristics of a cellulose fabric, different pre-treatment processes are applied, usually washing, bleaching and mecerisation. Differences in the sorption properties of untreated and pretreated (washed and bleached) regenerated cellulose fibres were obtained using tensiometry and compared with the classical method for determining moisture adsorption. Results show that compared to raw fibres, viscose fibres have the highest moisture and the smallest contact angle whilst modal fibres have the biggest contact angle. Pretreatment increases the sorption abilities and makes the material more accessible to chemicals used in the finishing process. Using the conventional method, it can be confirmed that fibres with the highest moisture have the smallest contact angle (tensiometry).

Modification of non-woven cellulose for medical applications using non-equlibrium gassious plasma
Karin Stana-Kleinschek, Zdenka Peršin Fratnik, Tina Maver, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents the use of a non-equilibrium gaseous plasma technique for the activation of regenerated non-woven cellulose, as used in the preparation of wound-dressing materials. Plasma technology provides surface modification according to the required quality in terms of speed, homogeneity, process stability, and efficiency. In this study the non-woven cellulose was exposed to oxygen plasma (O2) in order to acquire the natural polymer's super-hydrophilicity which, among others, defines the materials' usability forwound-dressing. The influence of the plasma parameters on the material's hydrophilicity was studied; and the optimal plasma conditions defined. Combinations of different experimental techniques (contact angle, water retention value, and moisture content) were studied and correlated with the mechanical properties, as a function of plasma modification. The specific adsorption capacity of the non-woven cellulose using oxygen plasma treatment was achieved. In the next step, this material with increased hydrophilicity and improved mechanical properties will be used in the preparation of multilayered wound-dressing materials for specific functionalities (incorporation of drugs, specific functional properties).

Antimicrobial medical textiles based on chitosan nanoparticles for gynaecological treatment
Tijana Ristić, 2014, doktorska disertacija

Opis: The aim of this dissertation was to develop a novel medical tampon for alternative gynaecological treatment using chitosan nanoparticles as an antimicrobial agent or as a drug delivery system. For this purpose viscose tampon band was used and functionalized with chitosan and trimethyl chitosan nanoparticles. A comprehensive of interactions between chitosan and cellulose as well as characterization of prepared materials were done. At the beginning, chitosan (CS) and trimethyl chitosan (TMC) solutions, as well as nanoparticles synthesised by ionic gelation were studied. Their characterization was focused on determining the charge and antimicrobial properties against common pathogenic microorganism. The influence of cationic charge on the inhibition of microbial growth was confirmed. Since CS and TMC solutions and nanoparticles dispersions exhibited antibacterial activity against Lactobacillus, a detailed investigation in chitosan’s antimicrobial mode of action was performed using a novel diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance (D-NMR). D-NMR allowed the monitoring of intra- and extracellular water exchange from the cells indicating the membrane alteration and leakage of intracellular constituencies. Further, in order to study the adsorption phenomena and molecular interactions between CS/TMC (solution or nanoparticles) and cellulose material, model cellulose surfaces were used, and adsorption was studied by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation. CS and TMC were favourably deposited onto cellulose model surface at higher ionic strength, higher pH values, i.e. factors causing lower solubility, where the presence of electrostatic interactions was negligible and non-electrostatic interactions were dominant. The knowledge gained from the model surfaces was extremely helpful in characterization of real systems, i.e. functionalized cellulose fibres and for understanding the obtained results. Immobilization of CS and TMC (in the form of solution and/or nanoparticles) onto cellulose viscose fibres was confirmed with several analytical methods. The attachment of chitosan onto fibres was reversible, as endorsed with desorption studies mimicking the conditions of vaginal usage. Evaluation of antimicrobial properties was performed using two different techniques, both revealing a high inhibition of the tested microorganism. In addition, Lactobacillus susceptibility testing has shown that chitosan-coated fibres do not have any negative influence on the resident microbiota. Assessment of in-vitro cytotoxicity demonstrated that samples do not cause a cytotoxic effect in direct contact. Additionally, model drug was incorporated into chitosan nanoparticles and subsequently attached onto fibres in order to create modern, vaginal drug delivery systems. Antimicrobial medical textiles investigated in the scope of this dissertation show the potential for their exploitation in gynaecological field as preventive or curative treatment without triggering any adverse effects for the user.

X-ray study of pre-treated regenerated cellulose fibres
Majda Sfiligoj-Smole, Zdenka Peršin Fratnik, Tatjana Kreže, Karin Stana-Kleinschek, Volker Ribitsch, Susanne Neumayer, 2003, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Regenerated cellulose fibres have had an important role to play in the man-made fibre field. The very special characteristics of different types of regenerated cellulose fibres, e.g. mechanical properties, sorption characteristics, and aesthetics were conditioned by the differences in their fine structure due to fibre formation processes. Additionally, the finishing processes could influence the fibre structure. A study was done of the crystalline structures of a solvent-spun cellulose fibre type (Lenzing Lyocell), made according to the NMMO process, and two conventional cellulosic fibre types, made by the viscose process (Lenzing Viscose and Lenzing Modal). The fibres were pre-treated (bleached and slack mercerised) and structural changes were followed by wide angle and small angle x-ray scattering (WAXS and SAXS), respectively. The periodical structure, determined by long spacing, was nearly the same in all the different types of fibres. A slight increase was observed after the treatment of viscose and modal fibres, but an unpronounced fall of a long period accompanied the pre-treatment of lyocell fibres. Some changes in crystallinity and crystalline orientation occurred due to the treatment conditions. The structural changes were correlated to the iodinesorption and mechanical properties.

The interaction ability of cellulosic materials as a function of fine structure and Helmholtz surface energy
Tatjana Kreže, Karin Stana-Kleinschek, Volker Ribitsch, Zdenka Peršin Fratnik, Majda Sfiligoj-Smole, 2005, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Many chemical or physical modification processes significantly influence the accessibility of fiber forming polymers by causing structural changes. The wettability and sorption ability improvements of polymeric materials are major tasks during finishing processes. Different pre-treatment processes are used in order to improve the accessibility of dissociable groups, hydrophilicity, dyeability, and whiteness. These are usually alkaline purification, chemical bleaching and mercerization. In a previous paper we presented the data for structural characteristics (density, crystallinity index, molecular orientation, void volume, diameter and the specific inner surface of void, etc.) of untreated regenerated cellulose fibers (viscose, modal and lyocell) [41]. We now compare the influence of different pre-treatment processes on fiber structure and the accessibility of the chemical groups of these fibers. In order to improve the accessibility, two pre-treatment processes were used: chemical bleaching of fibers and tensionless alkali treatment. The influence of these pre-treatment processes on the structure parameters was evaluated using viscosity measurements (determination of polymerization degree (DIN 54 270)) and iodine sorption ability measurements according to the Schwertassek method (determination of crystallinity index) [13, 16]. The reactivity and accessibility in a polar environment was determined using tensiometry. Contact angles between the fibers and liquids of different polarities were determined using the powder contact angle method and calculated from a modified Washburn equation [26, 28]. The surface free (Helmholtz) energy of differently treated fibers was determined from the contact angle data using the Owens-Wendt-Raeble-Kaelble approximation [30, 33, 35]. The differences in the accessibility of raw and pre-treated regenerated cellulose fibers obtained using tensiometry are compared with the results of the conventional method used to determine moisture adsorption (DIN 54 351, DIN 53 802). In regard to raw fibers, viscose shows the most hydrophilic characteristic: adsorbs the highest amount of moisture, has the fastest penetration velocities (Fig. 6), the smallest contact angle, and the highest SFE (Fig. 8). Modal fibers have the largest contact angle, the lowest SFE, and they adsorb the smallest amount of water vapor. Pre-treatments increase the sorption ability and the surface free (Helmholtz) energy while they decrease the contact angle. This makes the material more accessible to water and chemicals used in the finishing processes although the crystallinity index increases. The main modification in polymer properties caused by the treatments is an increase in the fiber SFE caused by an increase of the fiber surfaces because of swelling in the alkaline medium (washing, slack-mercerization), and due to an increase of accessible OH- and COOH-groups (bleaching). This enables the formation of an increased number of hydrogen bridges between the water molecules and the OH- and COOH-groups. Our investigations confirm the results published earlier thatthe main property necessary for the proper sorption behavior of cellulose materials are the accessible, less ordered regions and not the degree of crystallinity.
