Quality evaluation information support in higher education

Opis: Background and Purpose: The objective of this research was to develop a proposal of the evaluation information support in higher education that encompasses the Quality Assessor’s and Quality Analyst’s work support. Furthermore, the proposal also includes the fields evaluated in the processes of external evaluation of the higher education institutes by the Slovenian National Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (hereinafter referred to as »NAKVIS«). Methodology: The method called the “Multi-Attribute Utility Theory” (hereinafter referred to as “MAUT”) and MS Excel were used for the work support of the Quality Assessors, while the expert modelling in the Decision Expert programme (hereinafter referred to as “Dexi programme”) was used for the work support of the Quality Analysts. Results: The identified criteria allow a uniform evaluation, regardless of the Assessor. The MS Excel template with automatic calculation was made as the technical support for an evaluator and the expert model in Dexi programme was designed for a Quality Analyst. Conclusion: The model of the Higher Education Institute quality evaluation, as presented in this article, can provide a comprehensive and transparent consideration of quality at the Faculty, and, in particular, facilitate the evaluation process due to its information and technical support.

XML Schema metrics for quality evaluation

Opis: In XML Schema development, the quality of XML Schemas is a crucial issue for further steps in the life cycle of an application, closely correlated with the structure of XML Schemas and different building blocks. Current research focuses on measuring complexity of XML Schemas and mainly do not consider other quality aspects. This paper proposes a novel quality measuring approach, based on existing software engineering metrics, additionally defining the quality aspects of XML Schemas using the following steps: (1) definition of six schema quality aspects, (2) adoption of 25 directly measurable XML Schema variables, (3) proposition of six composite metrics, applying 25 measured variables and (4) composite metrics validation. An experiment was conducted using 250 standard XML Schemas collected from available e-business information systems. The results illustrate the influence of XML Schemaʼs characteristics on its quality and evaluate the applicability of metrics in the measurement process, a useful tool for software developers while building or adopting XML Schemas.

Predictors of health-related quality of life and disability in patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain

Opis: Background: The quality of life in patients with chronic low-back pain is lower in comparison with that in general population. This seriously affects the functional ability and working status of young and adult population. The aim of this study was to determine the level of disability and the health-related quality of life in patients with chronic non-specific low back pain. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study in 187 patients (45.5 % of men, mean age 50.1 years) with chronic non-specific low back pain attending physical therapy program. We used Visual Analog Pain Scale (VAS), Euroqol questionnaire (EQq), and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Results: Mean ODI score SD was 14.6 9.0. Mean score of EQ-5D was 3.6 1.6 points and of EQ-VAS 55.4 18.3 points. Mean score on VAS was 6.0 2.1 points. An independent factor associated with lower quality of life on EQ-VAS was higher level of chronic pain. Independent factors associated with a lower quality of life on EQ-5D were the presence of anxiety and depression, higher level of chronic pain, and the presence of chronic disease. Independent factors associated with greater disability measured on ODI were the presence of signs of anxiety and depression, higher level of chronic pain, and the presence of any chronic disease. Conclusions: Chronic low back pain can be the cause of greater disability and lower quality of life, especially in patients with somatic and mental co-morbidities, in female patients and in patients with higher levels of chronic pain. Doctors should focus on active search for signs of depression and anxiety and better pain management in patients with chronic low back pain, especially if somatic co-morbidities exist.

High school English grammar knowledge and the influence of English coursebook use in the Celje region

Opis: In this thesis we were writing about teaching foreign languages in Slovenian schools and about the methods and approaches used. We were talking about the lesson structure and lesson planning in general and later focused more on teaching grammar in schools. We were trying to answer the questions about what grammar is, why teach grammar and how to do it. We were also interested in syllabi and the fact how grammar learning is defined in them. Our theoretical part finishes with a chapter about the English coursebook selection. In our empirical part of the thesis we mainly focused on investigating the 2nd year students’ grammatical knowledge of Present tenses and were looking for possible correlation between their grammatical knowledge and the quality of the English coursebooks used in schools, frequency of students’ use of English coursebooks and students’ self-evaluation of their English grammar knowledge.
