1. When technology meets sustainability: microplastic removal from industrial wastewater, including impact analysis and life cycle assessmentJan Puhar, Michael Toni Sturm, Erika Myers, Dennis Schober, Anika Korzin, Annamaria Vujanović, Katrin Schuhen, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Microplastics (MPs) that are ubiquitous in aquatic environments and industrial wastewater streams have been identified as key hotspots of MP contamination. It is significantly more effective to remove MPs at these points before they enter municipal wastewater streams. This study is an environmental assessment of a novel pilot plant for the removal of MPs and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) from wastewater with a high MP contamination from a plastics manufacturer in Germany. MP removal is based on physical–chemical agglomeration–fixation by organosilanes. Formed agglomerates are separated using a belt filter. The COD is removed by an adsorption process. The resulting MP removal was 98.0 ± 1.1% by mass and 99.9987 ± 0.0007% by particle count, while the COD was reduced by 96 ± 2.7%. The system’s sustainability is evaluated using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology, evaluating system construction, operation, and end-of-life considerations. The current pilot plant is also compared to an optimized circular and sustainable upgrade, where drivers of environmental burdens are eliminated and collected MPs are reused. Significant reductions in environmental impact categories are achieved and the global warming potential is reduced by 96%. This study provides a sustainability assessment of a novel technology and circular solution to remove MPs from highly polluted industrial wastewater. 2. Multicriteria assessment of the quality of waste sorting centers - ǂaǂ case studyKarmen Pažek, Jernej Prišenk, Simon Bukovski, Boris Prevolšek, Črtomir Rozman, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: In this paper, the quality of the municipal waste sorting process in seven waste management centers in Slovenia was assessed using the qualitative multicriteria analysis (MCA) method DEX (Decision EXpert) implemented in DEXi software, which is based on multicriteria decomposition of the problem and utility functions in the form of ʺif-thenʺ decision rules. The study was based on eight types of secondary raw materials. The quality of the secondary raw materials, the regularity of the delivery of secondary raw materials to recycling units based on the sorting efficiency, and the loading weight of the individual baled fractions in the transport of secondary raw materials for recycling were the main parameters used in the model. The final assessment shows good waste management service in centers A and D. Centers B, C, and F were rated ʺaverageʺ. The ʺbadʺ rating was assigned to centers E and G. 3. The impact of weather conditions on alpha-acid content in hop (Humulus lupulus L.) cv. AuroraDouglas MacKinnon, Viljem Pavlovič, Barbara Čeh, Boštjan Naglič, Martin Pavlovič, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The influence of four main weather attributes on the content of alpha-acids of the hop cv. Aurora for the period 1994-2019 was studied. By analysing correlation coefficients, specific times of the year when the weather conditions affect the alpha-acid content with the goal of creating a forecasting model in Slovenia were identified. The most significant periods of weather that impacted the alpha-acid contents throughout the growing time of year are recognised as attributes of temperatures (T), rainfall (R) and sunshine (S) calculated from the 25th to 30th week (T2530, r = -0.78, P < 0.01; R2529, r = 0.72, P < 0.01 and S2529, r = -0.81, P < 0.01) and attributes of relative humidity (RH) from the 27th to 32nd week (RH2732, r = 0.82, P < 0.01). T2530 stands for the amount of active temperatures from June 18 to July 29. Likewise, R2530 matches to the precipitation (in mm or L/m2) during the same time period. 5. Big data usage in European Countries : cluster analysis approachMirjana Pejić Bach, Tine Bertoncel, Maja Meško, Daila Suša-Vugec, Lucija Ivančić, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The goal of this research was to investigate the level of digital divide among selected European countries according to the big data usage among their enterprises. For that purpose, we apply the K-means clustering methodology on the Eurostat data about the big data usage in European enterprises. The results indicate that there is a significant difference between selected European countries according to the overall usage of big data in their enterprises. Moreover, the enterprises that use internal experts also used diverse big data sources. Since the usage of diverse big data sources allows enterprises to gather more relevant information about their customers and competitors, this indicates that enterprises with stronger internal big data expertise also have a better chance of building strong competitiveness based on big data utilization. Finally, the substantial differences among the industries were found according to the level of big data usage. 6. Optimizing laser cutting of stainless steel using latin hypercube sampling and neural networksKristijan Šket, David Potočnik, Lucijano Berus, Jernej Hernavs, Mirko Ficko, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Optimizing cutting parameters in fiber laser cutting of austenitic stainless steel is challenging due to the complex interplay of multiple variables and quality metrics. To solve this problem, Latin hypercube sampling was used to ensure a comprehensive and efficient exploration of the parameter space with a smaller number of trials (185), coupled with feedforward neural networks for predictive modeling. The networks were trained with a leave-oneout cross-validation strategy to mitigate overfitting. Different configurations of hidden layers, neurons, and training functions were used. The approach was focused on minimizing dross and roughness on both the top and bottom areas of the cut surfaces. During the testing phase, an average MSE of 0.063 and an average MAPE of 4.68% were achieved by the models. Additionally, an experimental test was performed on the best parameter settings predicted by the models. Initial modelling was conducted for each quality metric individually, resulting in an average percentage difference of 1.37% between predicted and actual results. Grid search was also per formed to determine an optimal input parameter set for all outputs, with predictions achieving an average ac curacy of 98.34%. Experimental validation confirmed the accuracy and robustness of the model predictions, demonstrating the effectiveness of the methodology in optimizing multiple parameters of complex laser cutting processes. 8. Academic general practice/family medicine in times of COVID-19 - Perspective of WONCA EuropeAdam Windak, Thomas Frese, Eva Hummers-Pradier, Zalika Klemenc-Ketiš, Sonia Tsukagoshi, Josep Vilaseca, Shlomo Vinker, Mehmet Ungan, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: COVID-19 outbreak has significantly changed all aspects of general practice in Europe. This art-icle focuses on the academic challenges for the discipline, mainly in the field of education, research, and quality assurance. The efforts of the European Region of the World Organisationof National Colleges, Academies, and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/FamilyPhysicians (WONCA Europe) to support academic sustainability of the discipline in the time ofpandemic are presented. Medical education was affected by the pandemic, threatening both itsproductivity and quality. Emerging new educational methods might be promising, but theresults of their rapid implementation remain uncertain. A relatively small number of publicationsrelated to COVID-19 and general practice is available in the medical literature. There is a short-age of original data from general practice settings. This contrasts with the crucial role of GPs infighting a pandemic. COVID-19 outbreak has opened widely new research areas, which shouldbe explored by GPs. Maintaining the quality of care and safety of all patients during the COVID-19 pandemic is the utmost priority. Many of them suffer from poor access or inadequate man-agement of their problems. Rapid implementation of telemedicine brought both threats andopportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic also challenged doctors' safety and well-being. Theseaspects will require discussion and remedy to prevent deterioration of the quality of primarycare. WONCA Europe is making a multi-faceted effort to support GPs in difficult times of thepandemic. It is ready to support future efforts to uphold the integrity of family medicine as anacademic discipline. 9. Health related QoL in celiac disease patients in SloveniaEva Turk, Dušanka Mičetić-Turk, Maja Šikić Pogačar, Alojz Tapajner, Veljko Vlaisavljević, Valentina Prevolnik Rupel, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background: Measurements of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among celiac disease patients using a validated questionnaire have been lacking in Slovenia. This study aims to measure HRQoL in celiac disease (CD) patients using EQ-5D internationally validated questionnaire and comparing it to the HRQoL of the general population.
Methods: In this cross sectional analysis all of the approximately 2000 members of the Slovenian Celiac Society were invited to take part. We used a 3 step approach for recruitment and data collection. HRQoL was evaluated through the EuroQoL EQ-5D-5L instrument (Slovenian version) and analysed using the ordinal logistic regression.
Results: Out of 321 patients who gave their consent, 247 celiac patients were included in the study (77%). 68% of the participants were female and 53% of them lived in an urban setting. Most patients originated from North-East Slovenia, whereas approximately 30% of patients came from other Slovenian regions. The EQ-5D respondents’ self-reported health status at the time of the study show that most patients have slight or no problems when living with CD. The duration of the gluten-free diet, academic education and rare (< 1 × year) doctor visits affect EQ-5D in a positive way. On the other hand, higher age and chronic rheumatic disease were negatively associated with EQ-5D also when compared to the general population.
Conclusion: This is the first Slovenian study to measure the HRQoL of Slovenian CD patients, using an internationally validated questionnaire. The results of our study show that HRQoL is slightly impaired among Slovenian patients with CD. Clinical characteristics are better determinants of their HRQoL than socio-demographic factors. Greater awareness of the impact of CD on patients’ HRQoL would improve the holistic management of CD patients. 10. The effect of supplementing pig diet with chestnut wood extract or hops on fresh meat and dry-cured productsUrška Tomažin, Martin Škrlep, Maja Prevolnik Povše, Nina Batorek Lukač, Danijel Karolyi, Matjaž Červek, Marjeta Čandek-Potokar, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Oxidation is one of the major reasons for impaired quality of meat and meat products but can be prevented by the addition of antioxidants. In the present study, the effect of dietary sweet chestnut wood extract and hop cones on the quality and oxidative stability of meat and dry-cured products was investigated. Control pigs (N = 11) were fed a commercial diet (13.1 MJ metabolizable energy, 15.5% crude protein), while the other two experimental groups were supplemented with 3% of sweet chestnut wood extract (Tannin; N = 12) or 0.4% of hop cones (Hops; N = 11). The quality of meat and dry-cured products was evaluated by means of chemical composition, water holding capacity, objective color, and lipid and protein oxidation. No major effects of sweet chestnut wood extract or of hops supplementation were observed, nevertheless, some indications of improved water holding capacity could be attributed to antioxidants supplementation. The color evolution of dry-cured bellies from Tannin and Hops groups of pigs during refrigerated storage was also indicative of an improved oxidative stability.
