1. Using differentiation strategies for gifted pupils in primary school science classesAlena Letina, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which gifted pupils receive differentiated instruction in primary school science classes, which of the differentiated instruction strategies are used by teachers and how often. The survey sample included 134 primary school teachers. The results show that teachers frequently use questioning and thinking activities but make only minor modifications in the regular curriculum to meet the needs of gifted pupils. Gifted pupils rarely engage in activities such as providing challenges and choices, differentiated reading and writing assignments, individually set work, activities involving curriculum modification, and enrichment centres. 2. Children with reduced cognitive efficiency and addition of natural numbers up to 20 : a case studyIrena Budínová, Tomáš Janík, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The study deals with teaching and learning the addition of natural numbers up to 20 in the first two years of primary school. The first part presents the theoretical background for addition of natural numbers, the procedural and conceptual approach to addition, and the theory of the additive triad. The causes of the difficulties some children have with the field of the addition of natural numbers are outlined, and the issue of reduced cognitive efficiency is briefly introduced as one of the causes. The second part of the study presents a case study of a girl (7 years old) who experienced difficulty in learning addition. The approaches to and results of remedial tutoring completed by the girl are described. In the discussion, the issue of the addition of natural numbers is incorporated into a broader pedagogical context. 3. Extensive reading and changes to reading motivation in EFL among Slovene primary school pupilsAnja Pirih, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The article provides insight into the dynamics of the EFL reading motivation of a group of Slovene primary school pupils voluntarily participating in a 9-month pilot extensive reading programme in EFL and the factors causing motivational changes. Analysis of the semi-structured interviews and book reports confirms that reading motivation in EFL is a complex and dynamic process fuelled by numerous influences, most noticeably reading materials, the influence of family members, positive attitudes towards English, and external demands, which needs to be considered when designing reading programmes and researching reading motivation. 4. Exploring pre-service and in-service teachers' perceptions about early foreign language learning and dyslexiaMilena Košak Babuder, Saša Jazbec, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This contribution addresses Slovenian in-service and pre-service foreign language and general education teachers' awareness of dyslexia in the foreign language classroom. The authors examine and analyse the levels of familiarity with dyslexia among foreign language teachers and primary school teachers (in-service teachers) and foreign language students (pre-service teachers), their perceptiveness regarding the particularly demanding areas of language learning, and their willingness to engage in additional training to obtain the appropriate skills for teaching children with learning disabilities, particularly dyslexia. The results reveal noticeable differences in answers to individual research questions provided by the participants based on their profiles. The majority of participants stated that they were familiar with dyslexia from a theoretical point of view but also indicated that they were aware of the need to further improve their individual specialist-didactic knowledge and skills in order to give successful support to dyslexic pupils engaged in foreign language learning. The authors also predict the necessary extent of additional training measures in which foreign language teachers, primary school teachers, and foreign language students should engage. 6. Discussions on school reform - a long way to the unification of schools for 10 to 14-year-oldsRenate Seebauer, 2009, pregledni znanstveni članek Opis: The beginning of the article presents a retrospect of the discussion of unifying schools in Austria with arguments for and against them. In the 2008/09 school year a few selected Austrian regions started experimental school models in an attempt to unify their school system at the level of ten to fourteen-year-old pupils. More schools will start similar experiments a year later. Particularism — mainly politically motivated — has become evident: Nine regions, nine concepts. The fact that a new school organization will need teachers that have been educated in line with the new pedagogical concepts has been discussed sporadically. It remains neglected, however, in the overall concept of educational reform — at least in current public discussions. 7. A child and the art in the first and the second grade of the primary schoolDubravka Kuščević, Marija Brajčić, Ivana Matijašević, 2009, drugi znanstveni članki Opis: The nature of the relation between the art and art teaching is dialectical. Art teaching is unthinkable and unrealizable without art substances, and a work of art can't achieve its full sense without educated person capable of experience. Starting from that fact came the idea to explore the perception of the art works at the children in the early school age, in this case at the children in the first and the second grade of the primary school, their preferences and the attitude towards the works of art. It was tried to figure out how much children of the lower school age like to view the works of art and the preferences of the pupils of the lower school age (first and second grades of primary schools) according to work of arts of traditional or modern artistic expression (controlling the influence of the variable — gender), drawings or paintings, figurative or abstract presentation. Children of early school age in a higher percentage choose paintings in relation to drawings (81 % of the pupils of the first grade and 79% of the second grade). Most of the children of the lower school age (69% of the pupils of the first grade and 76% of the second grade) prefer figurative in relation to abstract expression. Most of the children of the lower school age like to view art work. Ključne besede: pupils, the art, preferences, primary school Objavljeno v DKUM: 19.09.2017; Ogledov: 1553; Prenosov: 103

8. Physical self-concept, anthropometry and body composition in preadolescentsStojan Puhalj, Črtomir Matejek, Jurij Planinšec, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The main aim of this study was to determine the relationship of morphologic features and body composition to physical self-concepts in boys and girls separately. This research included 630 children from north-eastern Slovenia, aged 9 to 11 years (M = 10.01; SD = .810), of which 311 were boys and 319 were girls. Morphologic features of the children were measured with the use of a standardized anthropometric instrumentation; the Maltron BF-907 Body Composition Analyzer was used for the measurement of body fat, fat-free mass, and body water proportions. The gender, age, and physical self-concept data were acquired through the French version of The Physical Self-Inventory – a short form questionnaire for determining the physical self-concept of adolescents, adapted to Slovenia. The relation between individual morphological features and physical self-concept was determined by regression analysis. Statistical significance was established at 0.05. The results show that the physical self-concept is more closely connected with body composition and morphologic features in boys than in girls, whereas the body fat proportion is the strongest predictor of physical self-concept in boys. The findings show that, particularly in boys, the physical self-concept is also largely based on the morphologic features and body composition. It is necessary to give special attention to boys, as we often think that boys are not as concerned with the physical appearance as girls. 9. Comics as a literary-didactic method and their use for reducing gender differences in reading literacy at the primary level of educationMaja Kerneža, Katja Košir, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of the systematic use of comics as a literary-didactic method to reduce gender differences in reading literacy and reading motivation at the primary level of education. It was assumed that the use of comics would have a positive effect on pupils’ reading literacy and reading motivation, while also reducing the aforementioned differences between boys and girls. The dimensions of reading literacy and reading motivation were examined in experimental and control groups, before and aſter the intervention, by means of questionnaires and tests for pupils. The sample consisted of 143 pupils from second to fifth grade from two Slovenian primary schools in a rural environment, of which 73 pupils participated in the experimental group and 70 pupils represented the control group. Effects of the use of comics as a literary-didactic method were not found: using comics as a literary-didactic method did not have a statistically significant effect on pupils’ reading literacy and reading motivation. However, when the four-way structure of the research (taking into account the age and gender of the pupils) was considered, some subgroups showed a statistically significant increase in reading interest and attitude towards reading. No reduction of gender differences in reading literacy and reading motivation was found. Based on the results, guidelines for further research are established and suggestions are offered for teachers’ work.
