Caring is fundamental to quality nursing education, fostering effective nurse-patient relationships, empathy, and holistic care. Globally, including in Slovenia, nursing institutions struggle to integrate caring behaviors into curricula due to a lack of culturally sensitive assessment tools. This limits the measurement and development of caring competencies, potentially affecting education quality and patient outcomes.
Objectives
To translate and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Caring Assessment Tool-educational version (CAT-edu).
Design
A cross-sectional, descriptive study design was used to evaluate the CAT-edu's psychometric properties.
Setting
Four nursing faculties, with data collected from October 2021 until February 2022.
Participants
A convenience sample of 703 undergraduate student nurses enrolled in first-cycle Bologna degree programs.
Methods
The CAT-edu was translated using forward- and back-translation. Content validity indices were calculated to evaluate content validity by nine experts, and ten educators assessed face validity. Construct validity was evaluated through principal component analysis and internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and RStudio.
Results
Content validity was strong, with most items achieving high content validity indices; however, three items (26, 52, and 74) scored slightly lower. Construct validity was confirmed through principal component analysis, with Bartlett's test of Sphericity (p < 0.001) and a Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value of 0.974 indicating suitability. Seven components explained 59.70 % of the variance. The 62-item version showed high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.97).
Limitations
The study lacked a test-retest reliability assessment and may have limited potential generalizability due to convenience sampling and specific sample demographics.
Conclusions
The first Slovenian version of the CAT-edu for assessing caring behaviors in nursing education is a culturally sensitive and relatively psychometrically robust instrument. It supports faculty development, curriculum enhancements, and institutional policies. Addressing gaps like noncaring behaviors can foster caring competencies and improve patient outcomes. 2. Psychometric properties of the Slovenian version of the Cancer Survivors' Unmet Needs (CaSUN-SL) measure in post-treatment cancer survivorsŠpela Miroševič, Polona Selič-Zupančič, Judith B. Prins, Vesna Homar, Zalika Klemenc-Ketiš, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background: As the number of cancer survivors is growing, valid instruments for assessing cancer survivors' needs are required. Thus, the aim of this study was to translate and validate the Cancer Survivors Unmet Needs (CaSUN) scale.
Methods: Cancer survivors were recruited from 30 family medicine practices and separated into two samples (sample 1, n = 147; sample 2, n = 148). Factor structure was explored with an exploratory analysis in sample 1 and determined with a confirmatory analysis in sample 2. Psychometric properties were assessed with internal consistency, test-retest reliability and construct validity.
Results: A translation and cultural adaptation of the CaSUN scale resulted in 34 items being included in the final version. The factor structure confirmed the five-factors solution of the CaSUN-SL. Cronbach's alpha was 0.94 for the CaSUN-SL and ranged from 0.71-0.88 for specific domains. Test-retest reliability showed moderate-high stability over time. The CaSUN-SL significantly and positively correlated with anxiety (r = 0.49), depression (r = 0.44), health-related quality of life (r = 0.36), and negatively with self-perceived health (r = - 0.36) and resilience (r = - 0.47), which confirms the construct validity. In addition, we found a significant correlation between unmet needs and age (r = - 0.29), gender (r = 0.14), cancer stage (r = 0.20), cancer type (r = 0.19), and time since treatment (r = - 0.20).
Conclusions: Results indicate that CaSUN-SL is a valid and reliable measure to assess the Slovenian cancer survivors' unmet, met and total needs and can be used for further prospective studies. 3. The KIDSCREEN-27 scale: translation and validation study of the Slovenian versionLeona Cilar Budler, Majda Pajnkihar, Ulrike Ravens-Sieberer, Owen Barr, Gregor Štiglic, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background: There are many methods available for measuring social support and quality of life (QoL) of adolescents, of these, the KIDSCREEN tools are most widely used. Thus, we aimed to translate and validate the KIDSCREEN-27 scale for the usage among adolescents aged between 10 and 19 years old in Slovenia.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2852 adolescents in primary and secondary school from November 2019 to January 2020 in Slovenia. 6-steps method of validation was used to test psychometric properties of the KIDSCREEN-27 scale. We checked descriptive statistics, performed a Mokken scale analysis, parametric item response theory, factor analysis, classical test theory and total (sub)scale scores.
Results: All five subscales of the KIDSCREEN-27 formed a unidimensional scale with good homogeneity and reliability. The confirmatory factor analysis showed poor fit in user model versus baseline model metrics (CFI = 0.847; TLI = 0.862) and good fit in root mean square error (RMSEA = 0.072; p(χ2) < 0.001). A scale reliability was calculated using Cronbach's α (0.93), beta (0.86), G6 (0.95) and omega (0.93).
Conclusions: The questionnaire showed average psychometric properties and can be used among adolescents in Slovenia to find out about their quality of life. Further research is needed to explore why fit in user model metrics is poor. 4. Internal structure of an alternative measure of burnout : study on the Slovenian adaptation of the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI)Nataša Sedlar, Lilijana Šprah, Sara Tement, Gregor Sočan, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This study evaluates the factorial validity and reliability of the Slovenian adaptation of the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) in a sample of 1436 Slovenian employees of various occupations. Confirmatory factor analyses were used to evaluate alternative structural models of OLBI, and reliability of variant scales was estimated. The results reveal a different structure of the Slovenian adaptation compared with the original one and a very notable difference in reliability between positively and negatively framed items. The results could be explained with a response bias or the specific nature of burnout and work engagement that OLBI promises to assess simultaneously. Therefore, we believe that the internal structure of the original inventory needs to be reconsidered.
