1. Digital transformation reduces costs of the paints and coatings development processTomaž Kern, Eva Krhač Andrašec, Benjamin Urh, Marjan Senegačnik, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: An essential characteristic of the new product development process is to develop a new marketable product in the shortest possible time with the lowest reasonable costs. Therefore, the key factor of the process is efficiency. The paints and coatings industry development process contain numerous laboratory tests to determine the appropriateness of new formulation. It is proven that digital transformation can reduce the number of laboratory tests and consequently shorten the throughput time of the development process. This raised the question of whether the faster development process also reduces the process’ cost, or they even increase due to information and communication technology implementation. Therefore, the research’s purpose was to determine whether reducing the number of laboratory tests, based on the implementation of information and communication technology (ICT), affects reducing costs in the paints and coatings development process. The conventional process and the redesigned process of paints and coatings development were used as the basis of the research. The comparative analysis of the costs incurred during the development process was made. The analysis compares the types and amount of incurred costs. The article proves that digital transformation has a significant impact on up to 48% on reducing costs of the paints and coatings development process. 2. Emotional intelligence of engineering students as basis for more successful learning process for Industry 4.0Slavica Mitrović Veljković, Ana Nešić, Branislav Dudić, Michal Gregus, Milan Delić, Maja Meško, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The purpose of this paper is creating analyses for understanding the personality characteristics related to emotional intelligence and how can this define the development program of personal characteristics in the processes of education for Industry 4.0. The main research goal is to measure dimensions of emotional intelligence in the student population based on a quantitative survey (Emotional Competence Inventory) through dimensions of emotional intelligence: self-regulation, self-awareness, and attitude towards changes. Since the student population was the research target, a group of 338 engineering students was selected. The group was characterized by highly diversified geographic origin, having previously completed school and achieved success. The results show that there are statistically significant differences between all three dimensions of emotional intelligence. Namely, self-regulation and attitude towards changes (both directly and indirectly through self-regulation) are positively affected by self-awareness, while attitude towards changes is positively affected by self-regulation. Developing student emotional potential is one of the most important actuators of business for Industry 4.0, especially in countries with low educational attainment and low social and economic indicators. 3. Implementation of the digital sales channel in the coatings industryEva Krhač Andrašec, Marjan Senegačnik, Benjamin Urh, Tomaž Kern, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The development process in the coatings industry can be shortened by digital transformation, and its costs can be reduced using a technical enabler. However, formulators need up-to-date and comprehensive data on existing and potential ingredients to develop the formulation. We were curious about how to supply formulators with data. The idea was that suppliers of ingredients provide data using the “common enabling technology”. We hypothesize that direct data entry compensates suppliers because they can shorten the sales process and increase sales. We used a survey to select key sales channels in the industry. Detailed process models were designed using structured interviews. We analyzed models using structural and operational indicators. Finally, we formed a new digital sales process and verified it. The results show that the digitally formatted sales process can be shortened by up to 32%. Simultaneously, more potential customers can be accessed using the common technology. Existing sales channels would not be closed down. Nevertheless, the digital sales channel is expected to prove its worth over time and gradually increase its share. The suppliers of ingredients can thus avoid a radical process transformation and the immediate integration of additional information technology into the company information system in such an evolutionary way. 5. Investigations of the structure and process parameters of sewing operationDaniela Zavec Pavlinič, Zvonko Dragčević, Dubravko Rogale, Jelka Geršak, 1999, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: An original measuring equipment and a system for investigating process parameters of the sewing operation structure and for establishing optimal working methods and real working conditions of the man-machine system in garment sewing are presented. The measuring equipment consists of a process parameter measuring and data storing system and a bi-plane video recording system. The measuring and data storage system is equipped with four sensors which measure the rotation speed of the main shaft, the movements of arms in the picking-up and laying-off zones, and the movements of the pedal regulator used to control the sewing dynamics. The bi-plane video recording system is used to record simultaneously the working movements (working methods) performed at the discussed workplace. From the process parameter measurements graphs for the technological operation structure are obtained, including the duration of individual suboperations and changes occuring due to pedal regulator movements. The bi-plane video recording system investigates the working method employed, the basic movements and and the optimal logical sets of movements, as well as the cyclograms of the movements used to define space and time values. The results obtained are compared with the MTM results, and the differences between them are presented. 6. Process integration of a steam turbineAndreja Goršek, Peter Glavič, 2003, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Cogeneration consists of combined production of electricity and heat using only one fuel which allows remarkable energy savings in comparison with a system producing electricity and heat separately. The possibilities for integrating a cogeneration system with chemical processes has been studied in this paper. Improvement in the systems where high temperature streams exist can be achieved by direct integration of steam turbine with them. Hot reactor utility was used instead of fuel to produce electricity and steam for further process heat requirements. A thermodinamics oriented approach to identify and preliminary design a cogeneration plant that completely satisfies process heat and power demand is highlighted. Pinch analysis with extended grand composite curve enables rational choice of utilities. The acrylic acid process was used to illustrate the procedure proposed. Economic attractiveness based on payback time and net present worth indicated that the steam turbine based cogeneration system would yield return period of less than 3 months, showing that the investment in cogeneration could be of interest for this plant. 7. Fuzzy Logic Model for the performance benchmarking of sugar plants by considering best available techniquesDamjan Krajnc, Miro Mele, Peter Glavič, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This paper deals with the problem of performance benchmarking of traditional beet sugar plants, by considering Best Available Techniques (BAT) for beet sugar production, as determined by the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive. A Fuzzy Logic Model, based on fuzzy set theory, was constructed for this purpose, in order to compare the performances of sugar plants within the sector's best standards, as expressed in the Reference Document on BAT. The effectiveness of the model was tested in the case study,in which three sugar plants were benchmarked against the BAT regarding the consumption of energy, water, raw materials and the production of wastes, wastewater, by-products and the main product. The model was recognized as helpful for the benchmarking needs of sugar plants. In addition, by integrating BAT Reference Document analysis into the model, it provides IPPC permitting authorities with an objective method and uniform BAT benchmarks to manage permitting process. 8. Dynamic effects of international fragmentation of production : empirical analysis of Slovenian manufacturing firmsAnže Burger, 2009, doktorska disertacija Opis: An increasing number of firms outsource peripheral functions in order to stay focused on their core capabilities. This dissertation contributes to a limited body of theoretical and empirical research on the relationship between intermediate inputs offshoring and firm productivity. The main aim of the dissertation is to study the effects of vertical fragmentation on firm productivity. In tight relation to the primary aim, I attempt to provide evidence for the focusing on core capabilities as one of the transmission channels through which imports boost firm productivity. Namely, the main hypothesis of the dissertation states that firms can exploit international outsourcing not only as an efficient means to cutting production costs and enhancing the quality of the inputs, but can use it as a leverage to direct scarce resources on their core business activities. By outsourcing standardized, peripheral components and activities, firms can better concentrate on activities such as research, innovation, sales and marketing, and increase their energies on matters that directly affect competitive positioning.
