Integrating computer science and informatics education in primary schools : insights from a Slovenian professional development initiative
Andrej Flogie, Alenka Lipovec, Jakob Škrobar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In this study, we present a professional development programme for teachers launched to introduce Computer Science and Informatics (CSI) in primary education in Slovenia. The study aims to examine which CSI core concepts teachers most frequently choose to integrate into their lessons when given the freedom to select the topics within the framework, and to explore how students engage with and respond to these activities, as reported in teachers’ reflections. This study is based on reflective feedback from forty-seven teachers from seven primary schools who implemented interdisciplinary lessons that integrate CSI content into existing primary school curricula. Qualitative data from 152 reflections were used to support our research findings. The results show that teachers most frequently introduced the concepts from the content area of algorithms and programming. In contrast, content areas such as computing systems, networks and the internet, data and analysis, and impacts of computing received less attention. Teachers reported that students were motivated and engaged, although some challenges emerged, including difficulties in solving tasks or following instructions. As this pilot study reports on the first year of a two-year initiative, the findings provide preliminary insights into how a structured professional development programme for teachers can support interdisciplinary approaches in CSI education.

The inclusion of children with special needs in folklore activities in Slovenian schools with a special educational programme
Bojan Kovačič, Nejc Černela, Marta Licardo, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Using a representative sample (240 professionals from all 28 Slovenian primary schools with a special educational programme), we partially confirmed the hypothesis, which states that professionals who teach in schools with a special education programme agree with the statements about the inclusion of students with special needs in folklore activities. The hypothesis, which asserts that there are statistically significant differences between groups of professionals (special and rehabilitation pedagogues, special needs teachers, inclusive pedagogues, social pedagogues, teachers with special pedagogical qualifications and other pedagogical staff) regarding their agreement with statements referring to the inclusion of students with special needs in folklore activities in schools with a special education programme, was rejected based on the results obtained.

3.
Attitudes of teachers towards the inclusion of children with special needs in primary and secondary schools
Majda Schmidt, Ksenja Vrhovnik, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Many researchers emphasize teachers' attitudes as a decisive component in ensuring successful inclusion of students with special needs (SN students). The empirical research that is presented in the main part of this article analyzes the attitudes of primary and secondary teachers towards the inclusion of SN students with respect to the type of school, the teachers' age, the number of SN students in the class, and the teachers') acquired skills. A questionnaire was devised for the study, based on two previous questionnaires: the Questionnaire on Attitudes towards Integration and the Teacher Stress and Coping Questionnaire. The secondary teachers showed more positive attitudes towards SN students than did their primary colleagues, as well as towards teaching and adaptation with respect to the students' SN and towards the psychophysical strain related to such work. The youngest group of teachers, those aged from 20 to 30, shows a higher level of agreement related to the provision of adequate support. Teachers with fewer SN students in class (up to two students) show a higher degree of support for inclusion of SN students than do other groups of teachers. Teachers without training for work with SN students in comparison with their colleagues who had it show a lower level of agreement with respect to support and assistance at educational work with SN students.

Study of different forms of peer violence in primary and secondary schools – a systematic literature review
Teja Primc, Teja Lobnikar, Blažka Tratnik, Miha Dvojmoč, 2021, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: The purpose of this article is to review the literature on peer violence in primary and secondary schools, and to present key findings of these studies. Design/Methods/Approach: The systematic literature review was performed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases, using the PRISMA method. Findings: A total of 81 articles were selected for the final review. The issue of bullying and cyberbullying is extensive and complex, yet there is still no single definition of this phenomenon. Traditional bullying in primary schools reaches up to 76%, while the prevalence of cyberbullying varies below 10%. The perpetrators are more often boys, while girls are often in the role of victims. Violence is more common in younger children. Risk factors for exposure to violence include belonging to an ethnic minority and the lower economic class. Well-developed emotional intelligence is highlighted as a protective factor. There is more cyberbullying in secondary schools (67%), while traditional bullying is as high as 97%. Male students are more often perpetrators, while female students are more often victims. Students with low self-esteem, members of ethnic minorities and lower economic classes are more exposed to violence. Risk factors for causing violence include a previous history of violence, substance abuse, bad associations, and a poor family environment. Research Limitations/Implications: The findings of the article provide a starting point for the compilation of a comprehensive plan for researching the phenomenon of peer violence in primary and secondary schools in Slovenia, and serve as a basis for the development and implementation of a programme for establishing a safe educational environment. Originality/Value: The article is the starting point for an empirical study that will address peer violence in primary and secondary schools in Slovenia.

Coordination of school science classroom furnishings with anthropometric parameters for 11-12 year-old children
Nataša Rizman Herga, Samo Fošnarič, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The aim of the research was to explore the size suitability of school furnishings with the help of anthropometric measurements established on 11-12 year-old pupils. These pupils who have switched from single classroom teaching to teaching by subject and have lessons in specialized classrooms that are designed for a specific school subject. We were interested in the discrepancies between pupils' anthropometric dimensions and the size of school furniture in science classrooms. The study included 192 pupils (N=192) in the 6th and 7th grades of primary schools in North-Eastern Slovenia. Readings were made of the pupils' anthropometric dimensions, including stature, popliteal height, buttock-popliteal length, elbow height sitting, thigh thickness, subscapular height and hip width. Measurements of the school furniture showed that the dimensions of desks designed according to ISO 5970 correspond to a size 6 (for those between 173 and 184 cm tall). Results of the anthropometric measurements have shown that 6th grade pupils are on average 152 cm tall, 7th grade pupils 160 cm. The research thus indicated a serious mismatch between school furnishings and the anthropometric dimensions, an issue which can have serious consequences for pupils' development.

6.
Preference for visual motifs in first grades of primary school
Matjaž Duh, Jerneja Herzog, Špela Ros, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: A visual motif is an important component of an art project and is the thing initially detected in the visual art. A suitable introduction into visual motifs is provided by art education classes. A teacher can enable a successful execution of an art project to a pupil, only with a detailed introduction into visual motifs. These are not defined with the curriculum; instead, they are freely chosen by the teacher himself. The motifs should be more unusual, out of the ordinary, colourful and original. With the right approach and the selection of artworks, the teacher can develop artistic creativity in his pupils. At the same time, pupils can develop the ability for observation, critical analysis and evaluation of visual art. In this article, a study is presented, whose purpose was to examine the preferences for visual motifs by gender and stratum of pupils on 4th level of primary school. The findings show the differences are more commonly reflected through gender, and less through stratum from which the pupils originate.

Arts and cultural education in Slovenian primary schools
Olga Denac, Branka Čagran, Jerneja Žnidaršič, Barbara Sicherl-Kafol, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The study, which was conducted on school teachers from all over Slovenia, examines the arts and culture status of primary school teachers, teachers' views about primary school education in terms of the inclusion of arts and culture topics and their opinion about the implementation of the aims of arts and cultural education in the planned and operational curricula. Results show that primary school teachers do not consider spiritual, cultural and aesthetic values as very important. The teachers think that pupils are most attentive to intermedia culture and that in primary school education more attention should be paid to reading culture, the performing arts and cultural heritage. They often achieve most of the arts and cultural education aims in their work. However, they pay less attention to aims such as investigating and expressing the cultures of other nations and developing cultural identity awareness.
