Country's development as a determinant of early-stage entrepreneurial activity
Miha Marič, Jasmina Žnidaršič, Miha Uhan, Vlado Dimovski, Marko Ferjan, Maja Djurica, Mitja Jeraj, Matej Janežič, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Our study is built on the dependence of early-stage entrepreneurial activity on GDP per capita, GDP real growth rate, unemployment rate, inflation rate, investments and public debt of different countries. We divide the early-stage entrepreneurial activity into necessity-driven and improvement-driven opportunistic entrepreneurial activity. To establish the dependencies we have conducted the regression analyses. Our three main findings are: (a) early-stage entrepreneurial activity does depend on our predictors; (b) necessity-driven entrepreneurial activity is negatively correlated to country’s development; and (c) improvement-driven opportunistic entrepreneurial activity is positively correlated to country’s development.

Hypodontia phenotype in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer
Anita Fekonja, Andrej Čretnik, Danijel Žerdoner, Iztok Takač, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: Ovarian cancer is usually diagnosed in an advanced stage and the present clinical and diagnostic molecular markers for early OC screening are insufficient. The aim of this study was to identify potential relationship between the hypodontia and epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Patients and methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 120 patients with EOC treated at the Department of Gynaecologic and Breast Oncology at the University Clinical Centre and 120 gynaecological healthy women (control group) of the same mean age. Women in both groups were reviewed for the presence of hypodontia and the patients with EOC also for clinicopathological characteristics of EOC according to hypodontia phenotype. Results: Hypodontia was diagnosed in 23 (19.2%) of patients with EOC and 8 (6.7%) controls (p = 0.004; odds ratio [OR] = 3.32; confidence interval [CI], 1.42-7.76). There was no statistically significant difference in patients with EOC with or without hypodontia regarding histological subtype (p = 0.220); they differed in regard to FIGO stage (p = 0.014; OR =3.26; CI, 1.23%8.64) and tumour differentiation grade (p = 0.042; OR = 3.1; CI, 1.01-9.53). Also, bilateral occurrence of EOC was more common than unilateral occurrence in women with hypodontia (p = 0.021; OR = 2.9; CI, 1.15-7.36). We also found statistically significant difference between the ovarian cancer group and control group in presence of other malignant tumours in subjects (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The results of the study suggest a statistical association between EOC and hypodontia phenotype. Hypodontia might serve as a risk factor for EOC detection.

Developing Listening Skills by Using Listening Logs
Iva Kladošek, 2016, diplomsko delo

Opis: For some students developing listening skills can be very challenging. This diploma paper deals with the importance of teaching and developing listening skills effectively in a foreign language classroom. In most cases when students listen to a text in a foreign language, they rarely think about how they listen and what can they do to improve their listening skills. For this reason, Listening Logs are presented in this thesis as a tool for developing listening skills. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part is theoretical and the second one is empirical. In the theoretical part listening process is described as well as the process of planning listening activities in the classroom. In addition, uncertainties and problems causing learners demotivation to listen are discussed. Finally, Listening Logs are presented as a tool to encourage students to listen outside the classroom. In the empirical part, the results of how students reflect on their listening are presented. This is followed by an interpretation of Listening Log forms which were completed by the students. The results show that Listening Logs are a useful tool for developing listening skills and that students' grade in English does not affect on the opinion that Listening Logs are an effective activity for developing listening skill. This was investigated by forming five hypotheses, two of which were rejected and three were confirmed. The results also show that Listening Logs develop learner's autonomy.

Challenges in commercializing biomimetic membranes
Mark Edward Perry, Steen Ulrik Madsen, Tine Jørgensen, Sylvia Braekevelt, Karsten Lauritzen, Claus Hélix-Nielsen, 2015, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: The discovery of selective water channel proteins-aquaporins-has prompted growing interest in using these proteins, as the building blocks for designing new types of membranes. However, as with any other new and potentially disruptive technology, barriers for successful market entry exist. One category includes customer-related barriers, which can be influenced to some extent. Another category includes market-technical-related barriers, which can be very difficult to overcome by an organization/company aiming at successfully introducing their innovation on the market%in particular if both the organization and the technology are at early stages. Often, one faces barriers from both these categories at the same time, which makes it necessary to gain insight of the particular market when introducing a new innovative product. In this review we present the basic concepts and discuss some of these barriers and challenges associated with introducing biomimetic aquaporin membranes. These include technical issues in membrane production and product testing. Then we discuss possible business models for introducing new technologies in general, followed by a presentation of beach-head market segments relevant for biomimetic aquaporin membranes.

TMPRSS2:ERG gene aberrations may provide insight into pT stage in prostate cancer
Zoran Krstanoski, Nadja Kokalj-Vokač, Andreja Zagorac, Boris Pospihalj, Miha Munda, Sašo Džeroski, Rastko Golouh, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: TMPRSS2:ERG gene aberration may be a novel marker that improves risk stratification of prostate cancer before definitive cancer therapy, but studies have been inconclusive. Methods: The study cohort consisted of 202 operable prostate cancer Slovenian patients who underwent laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. We retrospectively constructed tissue microarrays of their prostatic specimens for fluorescence in situ hybridization, with appropriate signals obtained in 148 patients for subsequent statistical analyses. Results: The following genetic aberrations were found: TMPRSS2:ERG fusion, TMPRSS2 split (a non-ERG translocation) and ERG split (an ERG translocation without involvement of TMPRSS2). TMPRSS2:ERG gene fusion happened in 63 patients (42 %), TMPRSS2 split in 12 patients and ERG split in 8 patients. Association was tested between TMPRSS2:ERG gene fusion and several clinicopathological variables, i.e., pT stage, extended lymph node dissection status, and Gleason score, correcting for multiple comparisons. Only the association with pT stage was significant at p = 0.05: Of 62 patients with pT3 stage, 34 (55 %) had TMPRSS2:ERG gene fusion. In pT3 stage patients, stronger (but not significant) association between eLND status and TMPRSS2:ERG gene fusion was detected. We detected TMPRSS2:ERG gene fusion in 64 % of the pT3 stage patients where we did not perform an extended lymph node dissection. Conclusions: Our results indicate that it is possible to predict pT3 stage at final histology from TMPRSS2:ERG gene fusion at initial core needle biopsy. FISH determination of TMPRSS2:ERG gene fusion may be particularly useful for patients scheduled to undergo a radical prostatectomy in order to improve oncological and functional results.
