Investigating the influences of smart port practices and technology employment on port sustainable performance : the Egypt case
Alaa Othman, Sara El Gazzar, Matjaž Knez, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In this digital age, sustainable development and competitive advantage of port businesses rely on their capacity to adapt to changing business requirements. Although many previous studies develop a relation between smart port, technology, and sustainable performance, there is an urgent need to address such issues practically among ports, especially in developing countries. Therefore, this research aims at investigating to what extent the Egyptian ports could apply the smart practices and employ technology to achieve and improve sustainable port performance. The Egyptian ports have been selected to serve as an empirical study in this research, assessing their current performance and evaluating their level of readiness and adaptability to smart practices and technology employment. Interviews have been conducted with a group of 10 different stakeholders from government, private sectors, and experts in the field of port management. The interview results showed the main challenges and obstacles that might face the adaptation of technology and sustainable practices in Egyptian ports. This was followed by a focus group with experts in the field to discuss and conclude some procedures that can be adapted to facilitate the implementation of smart practices and technology employment in the Egyptian ports in order to improve their sustainable performance from different perspectives (economic, social, and environmental), deal with the obstacles facing adaptation, and suggest solutions The research adopted ‘content analysis’ for both phases. The research showed the great potential of technology employment to achieve sustainable performance in Egyptian ports while highlighting the main obstacles and challenges that might face the adaptation with suggestions and recommendations to those obstacles in order to adopt the digital transformation towards a sustainable smart port performance. Nevertheless, there are some limitations that could be an open issue to future researchers and practitioners who can benefit from those suggestions to employ technology and adapt sustainable procedures in ports, foster new practical research initiatives to adapt the smart port practices in different countries, and test their impact on port sustainable performance.

A conceptual model for measuring a circular economy of seaports: a case study on Antwerp and Koper ports
Rebeka Kovačič Lukman, Kristijan Brglez, Damjan Krajnc, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper introduces a conceptual model for evaluating seaports’ acceleration towards the circular economy. The model is based on the identification and definition of circular economy indicators, weighted according to the 9 R-strategy transitions towards the circular economy. We have employed the analytical hierarchy process for weight detection and further calculations of the final seaport circularity value. Our results suggest conceptual validity and provide a detailed insight into the circular activities of the seaports from the indicators, as well as 9 Rs and sustainability perspectives.

Maritime issues in digital age
Sanja Bauk, 2018, znanstvena monografija

Opis: This book is a collection of research studies in the cross-section of maritime studies, information and communication technologies, and operations research. It contains a “layer” of topics that are more technical, and a “layer” of topics that are more managerial and business oriented. The fields of research are related to the author’s quite diverse interests in certain periods of time, and her success in applying for some research grants. The manuscript can serve as valuable material for educational and research purposes. This is especially important if we keep in mind that digitalization in maritime sector lags behind other business and industry sectors.

Systemic logistics providers
Mimo Drašković, 2016, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: The functioning of a port and shipping system must be perfect in order to provide a competitive advantage and stable position in maritime market. The importance of logistics in business success of port and shipping organizations in contemporary conditions has become crucial. Due to that fact, more and more efforts are put in the designing of integral logistics systems. Thanks to a complex, systemic and networking approach, logistics today is improving the speed and efficiency of operations and significantly influences cost reduction and therewith fulfills one of the basic strategic functions, anticipating necessary key competences of the firm. It is a resource framework for the overcoming of strategic limitations and a method for the enhancement of the competitive position and all marketing and management functions. In addition to that, the integration of partners requires, by rule, a consistent restructuring of the total chain dedicated to the creation of added value, i.e. reengineering of logistics and production business processes. Flexible and small structural units are created, cooperating among each other in a decentralized manner, retaining their key competences and strategic significance for the integral network dominated by a single leading firm as a center of the system, i.e. focus of the supply chain. The paper analyzes the formation of new logistics and marketing paradigm of the beginning of the new century and millennium, anticipating the overcoming of the traditional 3PL three-party logistics concept and formation of contemporary 4PL concept.

Efficiency analysis with non parametric method: illustration of the Tunisian ports
Arbia Hlali, 2018, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper applies a non-parametric method to provide level technical efficiency for 7 Tunisian ports during 18 years (1998-2015). These ports represent different data set. The use of the model of variable returns to scale (VRS) has led to interesting results. The results show that the most ports are characterized by low levels of technical efficiency, with the exception port of Rades. In addition, the result shows the variation of variable returns to scale and constant returns to scale of technical port’s efficiency. Furthermore, we concluded that the panel data improves the efficiency estimates.

Port hinterland modelling based on port choice
Tomaž Kramberger, Bojan Rupnik, Gregor Štrubelj, Klemen Prah, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents a new approach for hinterland modelling based on the results of port choice modelling. The paper follows the idea that the shippers' port choice is a trade-off between various objective and subjective factors. The presented model tackles the problem by applying the AHP method in order to obtain ports' preference rates based on subjective factors, and combine them with objective factors, which include port operation costs, sailing times, and land transport costs using MILP. The ports' hinterlands are modelled by finding the optimal port of choice for different locations across Europe and merging the identical results. The model can be used in order to produce captive hinterland of ports and can also be exploited in order to analyse how changes in the traffic infrastructure influence the size of hinterlands.
