2. University students' lifestyle in the context of physical activity, sedentary habits, and academic achievementsIvan Prskalo, Jurij Planinšec, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This study aims to explore the relationship between physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and academic achievement among university students. A total of 243 students aged 18 to 24 years participated. Physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire – Short Form, while sedentary behaviour was measured with the SIT-Q-7d. Academic achievement was based on self-reported average grades and compared across physical activity levels using one-way ANOVA. Results indicate that higher physical activity is not necessarily linked to better academic performance. Excessive involvement in physical activity may reduce study time, potentially leading to lower academic outcomes. 3. Lifestyle characteristics of students who are overweight, obese, or have normal body weightČrtomir Matejek, David Kukovica, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This study examines the differences in body composition and lifestyle habits between normal-weight (NW) and overweight/obese (OW&O) university students. A sample of fifty-five students aged 21–25 years completed validated questionnaires (HLPCQ, IPAQ-SF, WHO-5) and underwent body composition analysis using the InBody 270 device. Statistical analyses included independent sample t-tests and Cohen’s d effect sizes. OW&O students had significantly higher scores for body fat, fat-free mass, and skeletal muscle mass. While body composition differences were evident, lifestyle habits did not significantly differ between weight groups. Bias in lifestyle and well-being selfassessment calls for the development of more objective assessment tools and further research. 4. Differences in students’ physical selfperception in PE classes according to gender and nutritional statusDonata Vidaković Samaržija, Lara Pavlić Karamatić, Jelena Alić, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The purpose of the study was to examine the level of physical self-perception (PSP) in the Physical Education class, and to determine differences in dimensions of PSP according to gender and nutritional status. On a sample of 283 4th- and 8th-graders in primary school, an anonymous questionnaire was applied. Fourth-graders made higher assessments of their coordination, sport competences, strength, flexibility and endurance than 8th graders. Moreover, significant differences were obtained in certain dimensions of PSP with regard to gender and nutritional status. A low level of PSP may be an obstacle to physical activity. These results indicate that PSP decreases by age and by gender. 5. School-based exercise programs for promoting cardiorespiratory fitness in overweight and obese children aged 6 to 10Stefan Mijalković, Dušan Stanković, Mario Tomljanović, Maja Batez, Maki Grle, Ivana Grle, Ivan Brkljačić, Josip Jularić, Goran Sporiš, Suzana Žilič Fišer, 2022, pregledni znanstveni članek Opis: The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the school-based exercise
programs for promoting cardiorespiratory fitness in overweight and obese children aged 6 to 10.
Electronic databases (Web of Science and PubMed) were used as searching tools for collecting
adequate studies published in the past 20 years. A total of 13 studies met the criteria for inclusion in
this review, with a total of 2810 participants, both male and female. According to the results of this
systematic review, overweight and obese children aged 6 to 10 who underwent certain interventions
had their CRF improved. Furthermore, evidence suggested that interventions carried out during
a longer period of time suggested led to greater improvement of cardiorespiratory fitness than
a shorter one, but the level of cardiorespiratory fitness gradually decreases after the intervention. 6. A comprehensive approach in medical nutrition therapy for adults' weight loss management in LebanonMarie Therese Khalil, Joseph Matta, Mateja Videmšek, Damir Karpljuk, Maja Meško, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The objective of the research is to identify the different factors of Lebanese culture that interfere with weight loss therapy and assist the field of nutrition in homogenising in a standardised manner the protocol of Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). The first part of the study is based on a literature review, and, in the second part, quantitative analysis was used. The research was conducted on 514 Lebanese adults via questionnaire. The analysis was performed with the AMOS (Version 22, IBM®, Amonk, NY, USA) statistical tool. For the analysis of correlations, chi-square and non-parametric tests were used. Variables affecting weight loss management were identified with the aid of seven hypotheses using structural equation modelling (SEM). Body shape and Body Mass Index (BMI) were found to be inter-related to cognitive behaviours toward food, lifestyle practices, medical conditions, food and beverages. In parallel, and based on the research results, younger adults, in particular women, have better BMI and look better in terms of body shape. Ageing has a direct impact on weight gain. Older people have a lower activity level, which is more prevalent among women, and they also prefer to eat typical Lebanese food. Habits, such as smoking, drinking alcohol, are directly related to obesity and some medical conditions. Low physical activity influences the problems related to body shape. For further studies, one should also include types of physical activities in terms of intensity and number of hours. This would assist the study in being more specified and credible toward the effect of exercise on weight loss management. 7. Quality of life and health status in middle-aged presumed healthy Slovenian family practice attendeesMatic Tement, Polona Selič-Zupančič, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background: There is a gap in our knowledge of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a population presumed healthy, so this study aimed to assess the associations between HRQoL, demographics and clinical variables.
Methods: The participants were attendees, presumed healthy, at 40 pre-selected model family medicine practices (MFMPs), aged between 30 and 65 years and recruited during a preventive check-up in 2019. Each MFMP pragmatically invited 30 attendees to voluntarily participate. The EQ-5D questionnaire was administered as a measure of HRQoL; the independent variables were demographic characteristics, smoking, alcohol consumption, stress perception, physical activity, signs of depression, cardiovascular risk, body mass index, blood pressure values, and blood sugar and lipidogram laboratory test values. Ordinal logistic regression was used to calculate associations between self-assessed quality of life, demographics, and clinical variables, with P<0.05 set as statistically significant.
Results: Of 986 participants, 640 (64.9%) were women and 346 (35.1%) men, aged 42.7+-8.6 years. The average values for the EQ-5D-3L were 0.9+1-0.15. In the multivariate model, a positive association between adequate physical activity (p=0.003), and a negative association between higher age (p<0.001), female gender (p=0.009), signs of depression (p<0.001), stress (p=0.013), and EQ-5D score were identified.
Conclusion: Given that physical activity was shown to be positively associated with HRQoL, it is of the utmost importance for family physicians to motivate their middle-aged patients, especially women and those with signs of depression and excessive stress, to adopt a more rigorously physically active lifestyle. 8. Effects of cardiac rehabilitation and diet counselling on adherence to the mediterranean lifestyle in patients after myocardial infarctionMarko Novaković, Uroš Rajkovič, Daniel Košuta, Jure Tršan, Zlatko Fras, Borut Jug, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Adherence to the Mediterranean lifestyle—as captured by the Medlife Index Questionnaire (i.e., encompassing a Mediterranean diet as well as other aspects of healthy living, such as food preparation, physical activity, and socializing)—has been associated with reduced cardiovascular events in healthy individuals. In the present study, we sought to determine the adherence to, and the effect of comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation on, Mediterranean lifestyle adherence in patients after myocardial infarction. We included 121 patients (mean age, 55 years; women, 37%) undergoing comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation—i.e., exercise training 3 times per week for 12 weeks plus dedicated workshops promoting the Mediterranean lifestyle. Before and after cardiac rehabilitation, patients completed the Medlife Index Questionnaire. High baseline adherence was associated with favourable glucose (5.39 vs. 6.1 mmol/L; p < 0.001), triglycerides (1.1 vs. 1.5 mmol/L; p = 0.002), and HDL cholesterol levels (1.32 vs. 1.12 mmol/L; p = 0.032). More importantly, the Medlife Score significantly improved following comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation in patients with low baseline adherence (from 13.8 to 16.7 points; p < 0.001), but not in patients with high baseline adherence (from 19.4 to 18.8 points; p = 0.205). Our findings suggested that Mediterranean lifestyle promotion during cardiac rehabilitation improved adherence to the Mediterranean lifestyle, especially in low-adherence patients. 9. Associations between physical activity and academic competence : a cross-sectional study among Slovenian primary school studentsJoca Zurc, Jurij Planinšec, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Physical activity has beneficial effects on overall academic performance in children. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding how the individual characteristics of physical activity interact with other confounding variables of academic competence. Leisure-time physical activity with potential confounders—such as developmental, behavioral, family, and school factors, predicting overall, mathematical, and reading academic competence—was studied in a random sample of 1520 Slovenian primary school students in grades 4–6 (51.9% female; mean age = 10.4 years; SD = 0.93). A structured self-reported questionnaire was used to gather data on the children’s leisuretime physical activity and social-demographic variables, while academic competence was measured by teachers using the SSRS Academic Competence Evaluation Scale. The findings showed that children engage in physical activity most days a week, with moderate-intensity and unorganized activities. It was predicted that engaging in physical activity would lead to an increase in academic performance by 4.2% in males (p = 0.002) and 3.2% in females (p = 0.024), but after fully adjusting the model for controlling confounding variables, the prediction increased to 81.1% in females and 84.1% in males (p < 0.001). The frequency and intensity of physical activity, the absence of digital games, and attending sports clubs seem to have the most beneficial effects in terms of academic competence in school children, among other relevant confounders mediating in this complex relationship. 10. Consequences of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions on children physical activity : a Slovenian StudyJurij Planinšec, Črtomir Matejek, Saša Pišot, Rado Pišot, Boštjan Šimunič, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: During the COVID-19 pandemic, countries took several restrictions to contain the spread of coronavirus. In the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, primary schools in Slovenia were closed for a period long time (from October 19th 2020 until January 18th 2021 when they were partially reopened for 6–9 year olds until February 15th 2021 when they were reopened for all children) and organized sport activities for children and adolescents under the age of 15 was not allowed during this period. The aim of the study was to examine how these restrictions were reflected in the amount of different forms of physical activity (PA) of 6–12-year old children (N = 3,936). Data were collected using an online questionnaire (International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form) comparing different forms of PA before (BEFORE) and during (DURING) remote schooling. The results show that there has been a decline in children’s PA DURING, specifically, only 4.3% of children had their physical education ≥ 45 min (or 77.7% ≤ 30 min), as is the usual duration in Slovenia. There was also a remarkable decline in extracurricular sports activities (p < 0.001), which BEFORE had been participated by 72.2% of children, while DURING remote schooling, as many as 83.5% of children did not participate these activities. 69.7% of children participated in organized sports in clubs at least once a week, while DURING remote schooling, as many as 88.1% (p < 0.001) did not participate in such form of activities. Furthermore, the time spent exercising in moderate to vigorous PA also decreased (BEFORE 8.2% vs. DURING 24.9%; p < 0.001). We found that during lockdown there has been an alarming decrease in the frequency and duration of organized PA at school and at sports clubs. These findings are a good starting point for designing (developing) an effective strategy for promoting health-enhancing PA of children in the event of a future lockdown or similar situations. The strategy should focus on the appropriate implementation of PA curriculum and motivate young people to participate regularly in extracurricular organized and non-organized activities.
