Experiences as heuristics for geothermal public perception : testing the correlation between thermal waters recreation and geothermal energy perception
Maja Turnšek, Katja Kokot, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This research focuses on the question of how geothermal energy public perception is formed within a national context where news media do not pay attention to geothermal energy, and there is no active opposition to geothermal energy. The research builds on theoretical underpinnings of heuristics in energy perceptions and highlights the importance of physical experiences and associations as sources of experiential learning. Through a survey conducted among members of the general public in Slovenia, the role of thermal water recreation in shaping public perception of geothermal energy is empirically tested. The results show that, in this context, geothermal energy is highly positively assessed compared to hydro energy and nuclear energy, and that there is a correlation between frequency of thermal recreation and certain aspects of public perception of geothermal energy. The policy implications go beyond the simple recommendation of including tourism in public awareness campaigns but point to the specific vulnerability of energy acceptance in this context, where perceptions are formed based on “thinking fast”, and where the media and the public discourse on geothermal energy have not (yet) considered the potential risks and opposition to geothermal projects.

Slovenia’s nuclear energy pathway : strategic expansion, regulatory hurdles, and future prospects
Nataša Samec Berghaus, Aleš Ferčič, Klemen Drnovšek, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Slovenia boasts a longstanding tradition in the field of nuclear energy generation, with the Krško Nuclear Power Plant (NEK) traditionally playing an important role in the national energy system. As the country plans its future energy mix, nuclear power continues to figure prominently, not least in light of the proposed JEK2 project. However, the development of new nuclear facilities faces significant challenges, including lengthy regulatory procedures, complex construction processes, financial uncertainties, long-term issues related to nuclear fuel supply and waste management, as well as broader concerns regarding public acceptance. This article focuses on the legal dimensions shaping Slovenia’s nuclear energy pathway, with non-legal considerations introduced solely insofar as they serve to elucidate or reinforce the legal analysis. Within this framework, the licensing process in Slovenia is examined in detail, with particular regard to its multi-step structure and the administrative challenges it poses. In addition, issues related to public procurement procedures, transparency, and governance are well discussed, particularly considering past infrastructure project failures. While Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are being explored as a potential long-term solution, their licensing and deployment remain uncertain due to regulatory and spatial constraints. The paper also emphasises the importance of strategic workforce planning. Ultimately, the attainment of a resilient and secure energy future in Slovenia demands not only continued investment in nuclear infrastructure, but also a broader consideration of energy efficiency, security risks, and long-term sustainability—considerations which are addressed herein.

6th International Conference En-Re Energy & Responsibility : Book of Extended Abstracts
2024

Opis: In the context of escalating climate challenges, the EnRe conference is dedicated to exploring pathways to climate neutrality and the sustainable green transition. The conference is focused on the development and implementation of innovations supporting the transformation of energy systems, industrial systems, and living systems, all with the goal of creating a sustainable future with net-zero emissions. The conference brings together experts, researchers, policymakers, and business leaders to share their experiences, research, and visions. The aim of the conference is to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas, and to collectively develop comprehensive approaches and strategies for achieving climate neutrality. This conference is not just a knowledge exchange, but also a platform for encouraging concrete actions that will ensure a greenerand more sustainable future for our next generations to come.

Visiting nuclear reactors : safety and security aspects
Barbara Pavlakovič Farrell, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Visiting nuclear reactors is a niche tourism offer within energy (industrial) tourism, which leads tourists through areas that are not primarily meant for them. Hence, safety and security issues are even more critical in this case. This study aims to highlight different aspects of safety and security issues in nuclear power plant tours and to present measures taken to address these concerns. In addition, we studied the connection between plant visits and the public image of nuclear energy. Information was gathered through participant observation (personal visits of factory tours) and an online survey. There, we identified safety and security nuclear power plant visit protocols and a positive correlation between the visit variable and the two variables of the public image of nuclear energy, which suggests energy (industrial) tourism as a suitable tool to enhance awareness and knowledge about nuclear energy.

5th International Conference EnRe - Energy & Responsibility : book of extended abstracts
2022, zbornik

Opis: The tendency to improve energy devices, the impact of environmental factors and the development of new technologies for the exploitation of sustainable resources contribute to the fact that we have witnessed intensive energy development in the last decade. The two most important Slovenian energy pools, located in Velenje and Krško, are at the turning point of renovation, and are facing major challenges in the design and planning of modern energy devices. The current generation faces a great ethical responsibility to leave their descendants a world with as little human impact on the environment as possible. Therefore, communication between experts and researchers, discussion and exchange of different views for the future is of the utmost importance, which is exactly the purpose of the EnRe Conference.
Ključne besede: renewable energy and energy storage systems, classic energy systems, policies and strategies for RES, alternative energy systems, energy conversions, energy transfer, electrical machine, thermal machines, mathematical methods in energy engineering, environmental protection, micro and nano energetics, hydrogen technologies, low carbon technologies and strategies, nuclear energy, smart buildings, smart cities and smart grids
