1. BRITISH DIALECTS AND ACCENTS: MANCUNIAN VS. COCKNEY VS. STANDARD ENGLISH DIALECTRomana Gabrovec, 2011, diplomsko delo Opis: In this diploma work the author deals with describing Mancunian, Cockney and Standard English dialect and the accents of Mancunians, Cockneys and RP. The author presents the main characteristics of each dialect and then compares the three mentioned dialects where the emphasis was on the comparison between Mancunian dialect, Standard dialect and RP accent and between Cockney dialect, Standard dialect and RP accent. The author discusses the differences between the three dialects and the language and dialect differences in general. She also discusses the language and the dialect which tends to be described as ‘wrong’, ‘correct’, ‘ugly’ and so on. The methods that were used in this diploma work are: the descriptive method; the comparative method; the method of analysis and synthesis; the method of abstraction and concretization; the method of generalization and specialization and the historical method. The author found out that there are differences and similarities between all three dialects and that the greater differences are between Mancunian and Cockney dialects on one side and the Standard dialect and RP accent on the other side. She also found that all languages and dialects are equal and that there should be no description of a dialect as ‘ugly’, ‘correct’ etc. Ključne besede: Key words: Standard British English, Received Pronunciation, Mancunian dialect, Cockney dialect, accent, correct language, ugly language. 2. Gender-Based Conversational Styles in Reality TVVesna Videmšek, 2019, magistrsko delo Opis: This master’s thesis deals with differences in conversational styles between men and women in American reality TV show Big Brother. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the conversations in order to find out whether there exist any differences between male and female speakers in the use of minimal responses, hedges, questions, swear words, overlapping speech and topics in mixed-gender and same-gender conversations. Nine conversations between ten different contestants of the reality TV show Big Brother were randomly selected, transcribed and analyzed.
The results of this master’s thesis reveal that women use more hedges and minimal responses than men. There are, however, no gender differences in the placement of minimal responses. Both men and women produce the majority of minimal responses at non-transition relevant places. Furthermore, women swear less than men and use milder swear words. Men, on the other hand, are more inclined to use competitive overlapping speech. They also ask more expressive style questions than women, whereas women ask more relational questions than men. Lastly, there are no significant differences in topic choice between men and women. 3. Charles Bukowski: Women – the Analysis of Vulgarisms in Hungarian and Slovenian TranslationLucija Kardoš, 2019, magistrsko delo Opis: In this Master’s Thesis I will analyse the Hungarian and Slovenian translations of Charles Bukowski’s Women. I will focus on the analysis of vulgarisms, swear words and curse words. The book has a bad reputation, as many critics and readers have labelled it as sexist, chauvinistic, and are of the opinion that in general it degrades women. In this thesis we will include some of Simone de Beauvoir’s thoughts, furthermore, I will be discussing controversial works from antiquity to contemporary literature that are regarded as ‘filthy’. I will touch upon some hot contemporary topics such as Gender Studies. Following the release of 50 Shades of Grey, the taboos of fetishism, BDSM, and other sexual fantasies became quite commercial, and are considered to be a part of everyday life. These types of books were severely censured fifty years ago. My aim is to also explore how erotic novels and their explicit language are accepted by society. In the empirical section I will analyse in detail the translation of swear and curse words. I believe that a translator mirrors the elements into the target audience (in my case into the Hungarian and Slovenian cultures). 4. The Passion of John Coffey: Christian Symbols and Racial Elements in The Green MileJaka Delčnjak, 2018, magistrsko delo Opis: In the thesis I explore the presence of Christian and racial elements in Stephen King’s novel The Green Mile. The first chapter describes some basic theories of Christianity and its history as a background to the events and situations depicted in King’s novel and film. The second chapter analyzes how Christian elements have been integrated into literature by other famous authors, to form a comparison with King’s use of these motifs. The main analysis is made in the third chapter, where Christian elements in the novel are identified and parallels are drawn back to the theory of Christianity, especially regarding the character John Coffey as a Christ figure. The thesis also discusses the importance of the religious background of the author while I try to form a generalized interpretation of the novel. In addition, the film adaptation serves as a source for the analysis of visual elements of Christianity. Finally, the fourth chapter focuses on racial elements in the novel. These elements are then connected to the history of racial relationships in the United States and reflected in African-American literature, compared to that of white authors such as King, and a connection is made between the racial and religious elements of the novel as they combine to illustrate important themes in American society. 5. Connectivity of Fibonacci cubes, Lucas cubes, and generalized cubesJernej Azarija, Sandi Klavžar, Jaehun Lee, Yoomi Rho, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: If ▫$f$▫ is a binary word and ▫$d$▫ a positive integer, then the generalized Fibonacci cube ▫$Q_d(f)$▫ is the graph obtained from the ▫$d$▫-cube ▫$Q_d$▫ by removing all the vertices that contain ▫$f$▫ as a factor, while the generalized Lucas cube ▫$Q_d(\stackrel{\leftharpoondown}{f})$▫ is the graph obtained from ▫$Q_d$▫ by removing all the vertices that have a circulation containing ▫$f$▫ as a factor. The Fibonacci cube ▫$\Gamma_d$▫ and the Lucas cube ▫$\Lambda_d$▫ are the graphs ▫$Q_d({11})$▫ and ▫$Q_d(\stackrel{\leftharpoondown}{11})$▫, respectively. It is proved that the connectivity and the edge-connectivity of ▫$\Gamma_d$▫ as well as of ▫$\Lambda_d$▫ are equal to ▫$\left\lfloor \frac{d+2}{3}\right\rfloor$▫. Connected generalized Lucas cubes are characterized and generalized Fibonacci cubes are proved to be 2-connected. It is asked whether the connectivity equals minimum degree also for all generalized Fibonacci/Lucas cubes. It was checked by computer that the answer is positive for all ▫$f$▫ and all ▫$d \le9$▫. 6. Key word analysis of discourses in Slovene speech : differences and similaritiesIztok Kosem, Darinka Verdonik, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: One of the aspects of speech that remains under-researched is the internal variety of speech, i. e. the differences and similarities between different types of speech. The paper aims to contribute to filling this gap in research by making a comparison between different discourses of Slovene spontaneous speech, focusing on the use of vocabulary. The key word analysis (Scott 1997), conducted on a million-word corpus of spoken Slovene, was used to identify lexical items and groups of lexical items typical of a particular spoken discourse, or common to different types of spoken discourse. The results indicate that the presence or absence of a particular word class in the key word list can be a good indicator of a type of spoken discourse, or discourses. 7. Oryx and Crake in Slovene TranslationAndrej Cafuta, 2016, diplomsko delo Opis: Atwood’s main linguistic tool in presenting the dystopian world of Oryx and Crake is creating new words. They are used to depict the deterioration of language as a metaphor or even proof of a gradually decaying society and a vital component of the novel and this is why we focused our analysis of the translation by Alenka Moder Saje on how she dealt with this particular translating problem. We determined which techniques she used according to Vermes and critically assessed her solutions by analysing them according to Kitty van Leuven-Zwart’s model of translation shifts. The microstructural analysis of the translation focuses on neologisms and proper names. We also reviewed neologisms, how they are created and what the proposed translating techniques are. As expected, a microstructural analysis revealed many translation shifts, yet we determined that these specific translating challenges were mostly suitably met. 8. PERCEPTION AND PRODUCTION IN EARLY FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING THROUGH SPOKEN AND WRITTEN WORDSuzana Miljević, 2016, diplomsko delo Opis: Implementation of early foreign language learning in the national curriculum for primary education has been a significant and a popular issue among the language researchers, all the professionals involved in the process of early education and parents. The modern theories and research propose early foreign language learning in primary schools as highly beneficial, crucial and necessary in a sense of spontaneous language acquisition through simple and non-demanding tasks, which are primarily based on auditory perception and physical response as production. In contrast to popular approaches in early foreign language teaching, based on the relation between the tasks’ difficulties and language acquisition, this thesis explores the connection and defines the importance of the attention span in relation to successful language acquisition, in comparison to the importance of the task difficulty. The research was carried out at the Primary School Ljubečna among the second and third grade students, who took part in the listening and reading comprehension examination, which was structured for attention observation and measurement purposes. Each group of the second and the third grade students took a listening and a reading comprehension test. The results and observations of the testing were shown to lead to accurate determinations of the attention influence on early language acquisition. This indicates that there is a possibility that the early reading and writing are not adverse to the process of early foreign language learning and foremost that difficulty of tasks is not in a directly proportional relation to perception and production, namely less demanding tasks are not necessarily completed more successfully than tasks that are more complex. 9. An Analysis of Language and Gestures in Political DiscourseAleksandra Premužič, 2016, magistrsko delo Opis: Politicians have always used language accompanied by gestures to convince people that they are the best to lead them. The main aim of this thesis is to examine how verbal and nonverbal elements are connected in political discourse. More precisely, the study presented in the thesis examines how language and gestures are used by President Barack Obama and Borut Pahor and compare their use of gestures in their speeches. In the theoretical part we deal with verbal communication, nonverbal communication, rhetoric, gestures, political discourse and personalities of the president Pahor and the president Obama. The study that follows contains an analysis of two videos of Borut Pahor and two of Barack Obama. Screen shots from the video were made to see which gestures they use in different speeches. In total 16 gestures were examined for each video and for each of the gesture we noted what presidents were saying and which persuasive appeals of rhetoric they were using. The analysis shows that when President Obama and Pahor talk about similar topics they use similar gestures. The analysis also shows that gestures used in their speeches accompany all three lines of argument in rhetoric: ethos and pathos and also logos. 10. Stylistic comparison of the original and Slovene translation of Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the GalaxyJure Cehner, 2015, diplomsko delo Opis: An author's style can sometimes be as important as the content itself. One could argue it is one of the fundamental components in fiction, and it can make or break a good book. However, as much as we enjoy it, it can be hard to define. We know it is present and it can make us feel a range of emotions, but what causes the emotions on a linguistic level is not easily answered. Douglas Adams’ novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a mixture of science fiction and comedy. Comedic effect is prevalent throughout the book and is achieved by several linguistic devices. The optimal way to study one’s writing style is to break it down in to smaller components, and in the case of this thesis to proper names, nonce words and several figures of speech.
Alojz Kodre, the Slovene translator of the book, holds a Master’s degree in Physics, therefore I assumed he was more capable of bringing the astronomical concepts and technical jargon to the Slovene reader than a translator with no knowledge of astrophysics. The purpose of my thesis was also to find out whether he had been successful at not only accurately conveying meaning but also Adams’s unique style. Not taking into account his many stylistic elements can be detrimental for the overall reading experience. The discrepancies were highlighted with skopos theory as a basis for adequacy of translations methods, both used or methods that could have been used. The skopos theory helps the translator achieve the purpose of the translation usually defined by the target audience. It is a universal theory, but I was interested whether skopos theory can be applied to style as well. The translation must serve the readership of the target culture, but the author’s style, especially if prominent such as Adams’s, should not be put in second place. To some extent the translator also needs to be faithful to the author, but where does he need to draw the line? Occasionally, one factor needs to be sacrificed; whether the author’s style for the sake of understandability or the understandability for the sake of style.
Alojz Kodre seemed to favour purpose over form; sometimes for clear reasons, because preserving the author’s style would have made the translation less comprehendible, and sometimes for less obvious reasons. It is evident that the artistic aspect of the novel was not the translator’s primary concern. He, however, had very little problems with conveying the intended meaning to the target readership.
