2. Bare-bones particle swarm optimization for emergency scheduling in public eventsH. K. Zhang, Q. M. Zheng, S. Yang, Robert Ojsteršek, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Efficient scheduling of emergency resources is of great practical significance to ensure the smooth progress of large-scale events and maintain public safety. Therefore, this paper, firstly, proposes a novel emergency rescue system after public emergencies in large-scale sports events. In order to allocate resources, this paper establishes a single-objective model that minimizes the maximum delivery time (the injured waiting in place and being transported to the hospital) on the basis of considering the rescue effect. This paper proposes an improved barebones particle swarm optimization algorithm (IBBPSO) to solve the model. Through case analysis, it is found that compared with the bare-bones particle swarm optimization algorithm (BBPSO) and RBBPSO, the average optimization effect of IBBPSO is 62 % higher than that of RBBPSO and 23 % higher than that of BBPSO. IBBPSO has better performance in solving the resource allocation problem proposed in this paper. 3. Weakly-supervised multilingual medical NER for symptom extraction for low-resource languagesRigon Sallauka, Umut Arioz, Matej Rojc, Izidor Mlakar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Patient-reported health data, especially patient-reported outcomes measures, are vital for improving clinical care but are often limited by memory bias, cognitive load, and inflexible questionnaires. Patients prefer conversational symptom reporting, highlighting the need for robust methods in symptom extraction and conversational intelligence. This study presents a weakly-supervised pipeline for training and evaluating medical Named Entity Recognition (NER) models across eight languages, with a focus on low-resource settings. A merged English medical corpus, annotated using the Stanza i2b2 model, was translated into German, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, and Slovenian, preserving the entity annotations medical problems, diagnostic tests, and treatments. Data augmentation addressed the class imbalance, and the fine-tuned BERT-based models outperformed baselines consistently. The English model achieved the highest F1 score (80.07%), followed by German (78.70%), Spanish (77.61%), Portuguese (77.21%), Slovenian (75.72%), Italian (75.60%), Polish (75.56%), and Greek (69.10%). Compared to the existing baselines, our models demonstrated notable performance gains, particularly in English, Spanish, and Italian. This research underscores the feasibility and effectiveness of weakly-supervised multilingual approaches for medical entity extraction, contributing to improved information access in clinical narratives—especially in under-resourced languages. 4. The triage environment is inherently demanding for patient safety and is characterized by high stress, rapid decision-making, and quick action. In several countries, including Slovenia, there is a lack of studies on the patient safety culture among triage nurses. This study aimed to assess the perceptions of the patient safety culture among triage nurses. A cross-sectional survey design was used. The Emergency Medical Services-Safety Attitudes Questionnaire, distributed to triage nurses, was used to collect data. A total of 201 triage nurses participated in this study. The results revealed that the overall average perception of the patient safety culture was 57.27% (SD = 57.27), indicating that the perception of the patient safety culture among triage nurses in the emergency department was non-positive and requires improvement. “Job Satisfaction” received the highest score (63.18%; SD = 17.19), while “Working Conditions” received the lowest (49.91%; SD = 17.37). The perception of positive and negative safety culture responses was statistically significant for age (χ2 (3) = 17.750, p ≤ 0.001), education (χ2 (2) = 6.957, p = 0.031) and length of working experience (χ2 (3) = 8.875, p = 0.031). The findings emphasize the significance of improving the safety culture in relation to several areas of patient care during the triage process. This research serves as a crucial foundation for enhancing patient safety in triage, providing quality care, and reducing adverse events. 5. The studies examined have shown the negative effects on the environment that are likely to occur and those that have already occurred. In this article, society's relationship to the potential recycling of disposable surgical masks is considered and projected onto the possibilities of the cradle-to-cradle design approach. The development of a product from recycled surgical masks is driven by two different surveys. The first focuses on wear and disposal habits, and the second on the relationship to recycling. As a result, the flooring was developed with thermally treated recycled surgical masks replacing the filler layer. The goal of the product design was to improve the long-term life cycle analysis of a waste surgical mask. 6. Obtaining medical textiles based on viscose and chitosan/zinc nanoparticles with improved antibacterial properties by using a dielectric barrier dischargeMatea Korica, Ana Kramar, Zdenka Peršin Fratnik, Bratislav M. Kostić, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This study aimed to obtain functional viscose textiles based on chitosan coatings with
improved antibacterial properties and washing durability. For that reason, before functionalization
with chitosan/zinc nanoparticles (NCH+Zn), the viscose fabric was modified by nonthermal gas
plasma of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) to introduce into its structure functional groups suitable
for attachment of NCH+Zn. NCH+Zn were characterized by measurements of hydrodynamic diameter and zeta potential and AFM. DBD-plasma-modified and NCH+Zn-functionalized fabrics were
characterized by zeta potential measurements, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, the calcium acetate method
(determination of content of carboxyl and aldehyde groups), SEM, breaking-strength measurements,
elemental analysis, and ICP-OES. Their antibacterial activity was determined under dynamic contact
conditions. In addition to SEM, the NCH+Zn distributions on viscose fabrics were also indirectly characterized by measuring their absorbent capacities before and after functionalization with NCH+Zn.
Washing durability was monitored through changes in the zeta potential, chitosan and zinc content,
and antibacterial activity after 1, 3, and 5 washing cycles. The obtained results showed that DBD
plasma modification contributed to the simultaneous improvement of NCH+Zn sorption and antibacterial properties of the viscose fabric functionalized with NCH+Zn, and its washing durability,

7. A comprehensive approach in medical nutrition therapy for adults' weight loss management in LebanonMarie Therese Khalil, Joseph Matta, Mateja Videmšek, Damir Karpljuk, Maja Meško, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The objective of the research is to identify the different factors of Lebanese culture that interfere with weight loss therapy and assist the field of nutrition in homogenising in a standardised manner the protocol of Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). The first part of the study is based on a literature review, and, in the second part, quantitative analysis was used. The research was conducted on 514 Lebanese adults via questionnaire. The analysis was performed with the AMOS (Version 22, IBM®, Amonk, NY, USA) statistical tool. For the analysis of correlations, chi-square and non-parametric tests were used. Variables affecting weight loss management were identified with the aid of seven hypotheses using structural equation modelling (SEM). Body shape and Body Mass Index (BMI) were found to be inter-related to cognitive behaviours toward food, lifestyle practices, medical conditions, food and beverages. In parallel, and based on the research results, younger adults, in particular women, have better BMI and look better in terms of body shape. Ageing has a direct impact on weight gain. Older people have a lower activity level, which is more prevalent among women, and they also prefer to eat typical Lebanese food. Habits, such as smoking, drinking alcohol, are directly related to obesity and some medical conditions. Low physical activity influences the problems related to body shape. For further studies, one should also include types of physical activities in terms of intensity and number of hours. This would assist the study in being more specified and credible toward the effect of exercise on weight loss management. This art-icle focuses on the academic challenges for the discipline, mainly in the field of education,research, and quality assurance. The efforts of the European Region of the World Organisationof National Colleges, Academies, and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/FamilyPhysicians (WONCA Europe) to support academic sustainability of the discipline in the time ofpandemic are presented. Medical education was affected by the pandemic, threatening both itsproductivity and quality. Emerging new educational methods might be promising, but theresults of their rapid implementation remain uncertain. A relatively small number of publicationsrelated to COVID-19 and general practice is available in the medical literature. There is a short-age of original data from general practice settings. This contrasts with the crucial role of GPs infighting a pandemic. COVID-19 outbreak has opened widely new research areas, which shouldbe explored by GPs. Maintaining the quality of care and safety of all patients during the COVID-19 pandemic is the utmost priority. Many of them suffer from poor access or inadequate man-agement of their problems. Rapid implementation of telemedicine brought both threats andopportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic also challenged doctors' safety and well-being. Theseaspects will require discussion and remedy to prevent deterioration of the quality of primarycare. WONCA Europe is making a multi-faceted effort to support GPs in difficult times of thepandemic. It is ready to support future efforts to uphold the integrity of family medicine as anacademic discipline. 10. Clinical reasoning needs to be explicitly addressed in health professions curricula : recommendations from a European consortiumIoannis Parodis, Lina Andersson, Steven J. Evidence-informed, structured, and explicit teaching and assessment of clinical reasoning in educational programs of medical and other health professions remain unmet needs. We herein summarize recommendations for clinical reasoning learning objectives (LOs), as derived from a consensus approach among European and US researchers and health professions educators. A four-step consensus approach was followed: (1) identification of a convenience sample of the most relevant and applied national LO catalogues for health professions educational programs (N = 9) from European and US countries, (2) extraction of LOs related to clinical reasoning and translation into English, (3) mapping of LOs into predefined categories developed within the Erasmus+ Developing, implementing, and disseminating an adaptive clinical reasoning curriculum for healthcare students and educators (DID-ACT) consortium, and (4) synthesis of analysis findings into recommendations for how LOs related to clinical reasoning could be presented and incorporated in LO catalogues, upon consensus. Three distinct recommendations were formulated: (1) make clinical reasoning explicit, (2) emphasize interprofessional and collaboration aspects of clinical reasoning, and (3) include aspects of teaching and assessment of clinical reasoning. In addition, the consortium understood that implementation of bilingual catalogues with English as a common language might contribute to lower heterogeneity regarding amount, structure, and level of granularity of clinical reasoning LOs across countries. These recommendations will hopefully motivate and guide initiatives towards the implementation of LOs related to clinical reasoning in existing and future LO catalogues.
