Attraction basins in metaheuristics: a systematic mapping study
Mihael Baketarić, Marjan Mernik, Tomaž Kosar, 2021, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Context: In this study, we report on a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) for attraction basins in the domain of metaheuristics. Objective: To identify research trends, potential issues, and proposed solutions on attraction basins in the field of metaheuristics. Research goals were inspired by the previous paper, published in 2021, where attraction basins were used to measure exploration and exploitation. Method: We conducted the SMS in the following steps: Defining research questions, conducting the search in the ISI Web of Science and Scopus databases, full-text screening, iterative forward and backward snowballing (with ongoing full-text screening), classifying, and data extraction. Results: Attraction basins within discrete domains are understood far better than those within continuous domains. Attraction basins on dynamic problems have hardly been investigated. Multi-objective problems are investigated poorly in both domains, although slightly more often within a continuous domain. There is a lack of parallel and scalable algorithms to compute attraction basins and a general framework that would unite all different definitions/implementations used for attraction basins. Conclusions: Findings regarding attraction basins in the field of metaheuristics reveal that the concept alone is poorly exploited, as well as identify open issues where researchers may improve their research.

Matteo Zinzani, Mirko Usuelli, Paolo Cudrano, Simone Mentasti, Carlo Arnone, Andrea Cerutti, Alba Lo Grasso, Abdelrahman Tarek Farag, Matteo Matteucci, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Crop inspection plays a significant role in modern agricultural practices as it enables farmers to evaluate the condition of their fields and make informed decisions regarding crop management. However, existing methods of crop inspection are often labor-intensive, leading to slow and costly processes. Therefore, there is a pressing need for more efficient and cost-effective approaches to crop inspection to improve agricultural productivity, sustainability, and to deal with labor shortage. In this study, we present Rockerbot, a novel agricultural robot designed as a compact rover capable of navigating and surveying maize fields in their early growth stages. This technology is essential for timely landscape adjustments to ensure optimal crop production. The document offers a comprehensive review of the decisions made during the hardware and software development stages. The hardware section is centered around design choices influenced by the rover’s kinematics, while the software section outlines the tasks that Rockerbot can perform using mobile perception, such as mapping, sensing, and detection.

Mapping the Transformation potential of streets using urban planning parameters and open spatial datasets
Kaja Pogačar, Andrej Žižek, Peter Šenk, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Streets with an increasingly important place function play a significant role in the contemporary discourse on sustainable cities. The paper addresses urban streets that, observed from the urban planning perspective, have the potential to be transformed into either commercial or residential shared streets. After defining urban planning parameters identified as characteristic of shared streets, streets were quantified based on an analysis of the existing shared streets in Central Europe. By setting up distinctive scenarios that could help to detect specific types of streets, open spatial datasets were used for the mapping and identification of streets that could be transformed into shared streets. The methodology was tested on the example of the city of Maribor in Slovenia. The results of the research show that the selected urban planning parameters can help to identify streets with transformation potential, whereas the basic parameters, such as the building use and the length and width of the street, help us to better understand the urban fabric in which street spaces acquire new functions. The presented mapping method could serve as a testing tool for experts, planners, decision-makers, and the interested public to identify potential street transformations.

Framing the tourist spatial identity of a city as a tourist product
Melita Rozman Cafuta, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology for shaping the tourist spatial identity of the city and to take advantage of it to discover alternative urban outdoor spaces. As the number of indoor visitors has been limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic, open urban areas such as streets, squares and parks have become more important tourist locations. Design/methodology/approach – The assessment methodology consists of two basic steps. In the first step, the authors look for places or points that are carriers of spatial identity. For this purpose, the method of mental mapping is used. In the second step, statistical methods are used to evaluate the spatial suitability for the most common tourist activities. To obtain a holistic picture, a temporal component is included. Findings – The application of the methodology is presented in the form of a case study. The obtained research results provide an insight into the spatial situation of the city of Maribor (Slovenia, Europe). Tourist spatial identity of a city depends on time. Based on the value of spatial sensitivity indicator and the suitability of activities, it is possible to adapt the tourist offer to the temporal component. Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is an original perspective on the spatial identity of tourists. The presented approach could be integrated as a good practice in any other city worldwide. It supports the identification of suitable outdoor tourist places that are memorable, cosy, multifunctional and can be recommended by city guides (mobile or printed books). Every city has many hidden gems that tourists have yet to discover

Clinical reasoning needs to be explicitly addressed in health professions curricula : recommendations from a European consortium
Ioannis Parodis, Lina Andersson, Steven J. Durning, Inga Hege, Jure Knez, Andrzej Kononowicz, Marie Lidskog, Tadej Petreski, Magdalena Szopa, Samuel Edelbring, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Clinical reasoning entails the application of knowledge and skills to collect and integrate information, typically with the goal of arriving at a diagnosis and management plan based on the patient’s unique circumstances and preferences. Evidence-informed, structured, and explicit teaching and assessment of clinical reasoning in educational programs of medical and other health professions remain unmet needs. We herein summarize recommendations for clinical reasoning learning objectives (LOs), as derived from a consensus approach among European and US researchers and health professions educators. A four-step consensus approach was followed: (1) identification of a convenience sample of the most relevant and applied national LO catalogues for health professions educational programs (N = 9) from European and US countries, (2) extraction of LOs related to clinical reasoning and translation into English, (3) mapping of LOs into predefined categories developed within the Erasmus+ Developing, implementing, and disseminating an adaptive clinical reasoning curriculum for healthcare students and educators (DID-ACT) consortium, and (4) synthesis of analysis findings into recommendations for how LOs related to clinical reasoning could be presented and incorporated in LO catalogues, upon consensus. Three distinct recommendations were formulated: (1) make clinical reasoning explicit, (2) emphasize interprofessional and collaboration aspects of clinical reasoning, and (3) include aspects of teaching and assessment of clinical reasoning. In addition, the consortium understood that implementation of bilingual catalogues with English as a common language might contribute to lower heterogeneity regarding amount, structure, and level of granularity of clinical reasoning LOs across countries. These recommendations will hopefully motivate and guide initiatives towards the implementation of LOs related to clinical reasoning in existing and future LO catalogues.

Phenotyping of mammalian CHO cell line in fed-batch bioprocess by intensified and classical procedure : master's thesis
Matic Košir, 2023, magistrsko delo

Opis: Nowadays, pharmaceutical industry is striving to find more biologically relevant solutions and to move from synthetic to biological products. Biopharmaceuticals represent an emerging sector in the pharmaceutical industry and are useful for a wide range of indications, including oncology and rheumatology. The development and optimisation of bioprocesses at laboratory scale is crucial for process understanding and translation into production. Bioprocess development often begins with comparison of several potential clones to be characterized, tested in low-volume cultures with different media or other variables, and then evaluated for growth, productivity, and consistency. The purpose of this master's thesis is to review changes in growth curves, substrate consumption, yield, and product quality of a mammalian cell line when substituting glucose as the main carbon source with alternative energy sources. This master thesis presents an attempt to adapt a mammalian CHO cell line to alternative energy sources. A comparison of the cultivation with maintenance of the CHO mammalian cell line by an intensified and a classical process is also shown. Substrate requirements at different time points of the process were monitored using phenotypic microarrays. Based on the obtained and analyzed results of the phenotypic microarrays, we tried to optimize the cell culture supplementation strategy. We have tried to use small molecules to facilitate adaptation to alternative energy sources. Our results showed that growing CHO cell culture on an alternative energy source-maltose and cell reprogramming with small molecules affects the quality of the product. Trends in cell growth, substrate consumption, by-product excretion and final product concentration are similar between the reference cell cultures and those pre-treated with small molecules. We found that adapting a mammalian CHO cell line to an alternative energy source is a challenging process that would need to be carried out over a long period of time.

The spread of invasive neophytes in the riparia vegetation of the Tichá Orlice
Lenka Hajzlerová, Tomáš Matějček, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This article summarises the observations and findings gained during the field survey of invasive neophytes in riparian vegetation of the river of Tichá Orlice in the Czech Republic. Seventeen taxa that could significantly load the riparian vegetation of the given area were chosen. A methodology of mapping and surveying which was designed by Matějček (2009) was applied. Using this methodology, neophytes were recorded in segments (500 m long parts of the river channel). The occurrence was expressed by the means of a logarithmic scale. Final data were evaluated with the aid of indexes for individual segments or groups of segments. As more parts of the river channel network of the Czech Republic have been mapped and surveyed this way, it is possible to compare the final data and results. In the riparian vegetation of the Tichá Orlice following plants were registered most frequently: Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera), Small Balsam (Impatiens parviflora) and Reynoutria (Reynoutria sp. div.) The mapped part of the Tichá Orlice is, in comparison to other watercourses, belongs to the watercourses that are loaded with the invasive kinds of plants more than average.

A comparison of the channel geomorphic unit composition of regulated and unregulated reaches in the Soča river
Ian Maddock, Nataša Smolar, Graham Hill, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper examines the effects of flow regulation on the size, spatial distribution and connectivity of channel geomorphic units (CGU) in the Soča River, Slovenia. A river channel survey was completed along three reaches, i.e. an unregulated reach (reach 1), and two regulated reaches with lower discharges, (reach 2 and 3). Results demonstrated significant differences in the CGU composition between the unregulated and regulated reaches. Flow regulation in the Soča River alters the dominant types of CGU's present, significantly reduces the size of CGU's, and affects the longitudinal distribution of types by reducing habitat connectivity and creating greater habitat fragmentation.

Point and find: the intuitive user experience in accessing spatially structured dialect dictionaries
Eveline Wandl-Vogt, 2010, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This article adresses a long-term project of the “Austrian Academic Dialect Dictionary” the “Wörterbuch der bairischen Mundarten in Österreich (WBÖ / Dictionary of Bavarian dialects in Austria)”. The project Datenbank der bairischen Mundarten (DBÖ / Database of Bavarian dialects in Austria) commenced in 1993 and was aimed at the digitalisation of the archives. In 1998 a rationalisation concept was issued, which targeted the completion of the dictionary in 2020 as a (virtual) unit consisting of the printed dictionary and a complementary database. The project Database of Bavarian dialects in Austria electronically mapped (dbo@ema) has demonstrated how the unification of online dictionaries and source material databases with visual, geo-referenced access applications and so called ‘topographic navigation’ can increase usability and lead to greater interdisciplinary insight.
