Simple stochastic model for planning the inventory of spare components subject to wear-out

Opis: We treat an industrial system which comprises of a number of identical components subject to wear-out. To support the system maintenance an appropriate inventory of spare components is needed. In order to plan the sufficient inventory of spare components, two variants of a simple stochastic model are developed. In both variants, the aim is to determine how many spare components are needed at the beginning of a planning interval to meet demand for corrective replacements during this interval. Under the first variant the acceptable probability of spare shortage during the planning interval is chosen as a decision variable. While in the second variant the adequate spare inventory level is assessed by taking into account the expected number of component failures within the planning interval. A comparison of both variants of the model shows that calculations involved in the second variant are simpler. However, it can only be used when the inventory of spare components can be planned for a relatively long period of time. The determination of an adequate number of spare components according to both variants of our model depends on the form of the probability density function of component failure times. Since the components are subject to wear-out, this function exhibits a peak-shaped form that can be described by different statistical density functions. Advantages and disadvantages of using the normal, lognormal, Weibull, and Gamma density function in our model are discussed. Among the probability density functions studied, the normal density function is found to be the most appropriate for calculations in our model. The applicability of both variants of the model is given through numerical examples using field data on electric locomotives of Slovenian Railways.

The role of maintenance regarding improving product quality and company's profitability

Opis: This paper presents a study, which examines the role of maintenance regarding improving product quality and companyŽs profitability. The empirical data for this study was drawn from a Slovenian company in order to address the researchproblem. The main results of the case study showed, that 3.22 % of profit could be generated at weaving machine, if all unplanned stoppages and loss of quality due to decrease in the productivity would be prevented. Results also showed that due to productivity improvement, quality rate would be improved for approximately 2 %. These Žndings therefore, indicate that maintenance has impact on product quality and companyŽs profitability. Thus, these findings also acknowledge maintenanceŽs potential of increasing the overall profit.

Some simple approaches to planning the inventory of spare components of an industrial system

Opis: Two variants of a simple stochastic model for planning the inventory of spare components supporting maintenance of an industrial system are developed. In both variants, the aim is to determine how many spare components are needed at the beginning of a planning interval to fulfil demand for corrective replacements during this interval. Under the first variant, the acceptable probability of spare shortage during the planning interval is chosen as a decision variable while in the second variant, the adequate spare inventory level is assessed taking into account the expected number of component failures within the planning interval. Calculation of the number of spare components needed depends on the form of the probability density function of component failure times. Different statistical density functions that are useful to describe this function are presented. Advantages and disadvantages of using a particular density function in our model are discussed. The applicability of the model is given through illustrative numerical examples.

Maintenance supply chain for nuclear power plants : information technology support for human resources management

Opis: The paper is looking at a case on IT support of HR management in a maintenance supply chain for nuclear power plants and analyzing a specific solution developed by NUMIP Ltd. The database NOS Data developed by NUMIP Ltd.has proved to be an efficient tool for the intended purpose and size of the current application. Yet there is a clear potential for improvement of the tool in the future, mainly related to direct electronic data exchange with customers and subcontractors, as well as to implementation of requirements of nuclear plants from different markets. The case study provides a description of a relatively complex requirement structure that applies to outsourced personnel working in maintenance activities in a nuclear power plant. The area is rather poorly covered in literature, hence the paper may be of interest to practitioners and students, as well as researchers.

Strategic role of maintenance in logistics of tomorrow

Opis: Despite the fact that maintenance of array of machinery and equipment is often considered as one of the backup processes or operative functions, its reliable and safe performance is extremely important for every day-to-day routine work, especially operations related to logistics. The latter is interdisciplinary professional and scientific activity which combines variety of operations and subsystems, including the maintenance, which is the subject of research in this paper. It is important to bear in mind that any object invented or fabricated by man needs maintenance. It is simply impossible to discuss comprehensive and quality logistics without considering the function of maintenance, i.e. providing reliable function of logistic machinery and equipment that is overall equipment effectiveness.
