INTERACTION BETWEEN QUALITY MANAGEMENT, PRODUCTION AND MAINTENANCE PERFORMANCE
Damjan Maletič, 2015, doktorsko delo/naloga

Opis: Many organisations invest a considerable amount of capital and resources, implementing new techniques to improve their performance. An effective management of production and maintenance and processes is vital for economic viability and a long term survival of many industries. In fact, an effective and efficient maintenance process is essential to assure asset performance. With this recognition, the asset and maintenance management has become an indispensable element of strategic thinking of asset owners and asset managers. This research aims to investigate the interaction between quality management, production and maintenance performance. The relevant theoretical foundations and research gaps are presented first, followed by development of a conceptual framework. The framework builds upon resource-based theory (RBT) literature to develop a conceptual framework, mainly to understand how company’s resources could contribute to company’s performance. Based on this theoretical underpinning two main research streams are studied, namely quality management in maintenance and asset management. Different sources of data were utilized to answer the proposed research questions. The thesis includes two large-scale surveys (among Slovenian organizations as well as an international survey conducted in Slovenia, Sweden, Poland, Slovakia, Greece and Turkey) and two empirical case studies. The outcome of regression analysis provides the evidence that quality management orientation is an important predictor of maintenance performance. By testing the impact of quality management orientation on maintenance performance, this research shows that strong foundation on quality management orientation is an effective way of improving maintenance performance. Further, by examining continuous improvement in relation to maintenance performance, this research seeks to examine the role of quality management practices in achieving maintenance performance. In this regard it was found that continuous improvement significantly and positively affects the maintenance performance. In addition, results of this research revealed a mediator effect of continuous improvement on the relationship between quality management orientation and maintenance performance. Moreover, this research examines the relationship between physical asset management practices and sustainability and operational performance as well. The research is based on a premise that asset management, which comprises of risk management practices, performance assessment practices, life cycle management practices, policy & strategy practices, leads to improved organizational performance. The results of this research provide the evidence to support the hypotheses and to demonstrate that organizations can benefit from the implementation of asset management practices. The MANOVA furthermore provides interesting insights into the effects of asset management practices on the organizational performance. The results indicate that there are significant mean differences in organizational performance dimensions (as measured by the business performance, environmental performance, social performance and operational performance) for low and high levels of asset management practices. Therefore, by focusing on asset management practices, organizations can expect to achieve higher performance outcomes. In addition a comparison between Slovenian and Polish data subset was performed. The results revealed some distinct elements, namely regarding the performance outcome. For example, the results indicate that Slovenian organizations achieved higher scores in business, environmental and operational performance, while Polish organizations achieved higher scores in social performance.

Analysis of vibrations and noise to determine the condition of gear units
Aleš Belšak, Jurij Prezelj, 2011, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: The main goal of maintenance is to maintain the characteristics of a technical system at the most favourable or still acceptable level. Maintenance costs can be reduced, operation can become more reliable and the frequency and complexity of damages can be reduced. To evaluate the condition of a technical system, it is necessary to collect precise data, and the to analyse, compare and process this data properly. Gear units are the most frequent machine parts or couplings. They consist of a housing, toothed wheels, bearings and a lubricating system and are of various types and sizes. Durable damages in gear units are often a resulta of the following factors: geometrical deviations or unbalanced component parts, material fatigue, which is a result of engagement of a gear pair, or damages caused to roller bearings. To monitor the condition of mechanical systems, methods for measuring vibrations and noise are usually used; data about a gear unit can be acquired in this way. Afterwards certain tools are used to analyse the data. Features that denote the presence of damages and faults are identified in this way.

Strategic role of maintenance in logistics of tomorrow
Mladen Jakovčić, Bojan Rosi, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Despite the fact that maintenance of array of machinery and equipment is often considered as one of the backup processes or operative functions, its reliable and safe performance is extremely important for every day-to-day routine work, especially operations related to logistics. The latter is interdisciplinary professional and scientific activity which combines variety of operations and subsystems, including the maintenance, which is the subject of research in this paper. It is important to bear in mind that any object invented or fabricated by man needs maintenance. It is simply impossible to discuss comprehensive and quality logistics without considering the function of maintenance, i.e. providing reliable function of logistic machinery and equipment that is overall equipment effectiveness.

Maintenance supply chain for nuclear power plants : information technology support for human resources management
Andrej Androjna, Robert Bizjak, Bojan Rosi, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The paper is looking at a case on IT support of HR management in a maintenance supply chain for nuclear power plants and analyzing a specific solution developed by NUMIP Ltd. The database NOS Data developed by NUMIP Ltd.has proved to be an efficient tool for the intended purpose and size of the current application. Yet there is a clear potential for improvement of the tool in the future, mainly related to direct electronic data exchange with customers and subcontractors, as well as to implementation of requirements of nuclear plants from different markets. The case study provides a description of a relatively complex requirement structure that applies to outsourced personnel working in maintenance activities in a nuclear power plant. The area is rather poorly covered in literature, hence the paper may be of interest to practitioners and students, as well as researchers.

Some simple approaches to planning the inventory of spare components of an industrial system
Alenka Brezavšček, Alenka Hudoklin, 2010, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: Two variants of a simple stochastic model for planning the inventory of spare components supporting maintenance of an industrial system are developed. In both variants, the aim is to determine how many spare components are needed at the beginning of a planning interval to fulfil demand for corrective replacements during this interval. Under the first variant, the acceptable probability of spare shortage during the planning interval is chosen as a decision variable while in the second variant, the adequate spare inventory level is assessed taking into account the expected number of component failures within the planning interval. Calculation of the number of spare components needed depends on the form of the probability density function of component failure times. Different statistical density functions that are useful to describe this function are presented. Advantages and disadvantages of using a particular density function in our model are discussed. The applicability of the model is given through illustrative numerical examples.

The role of maintenance regarding improving product quality and company's profitability
Damjan Maletič, Matjaž Maletič, Basim Al-Najjar, Boštjan Gomišček, 2012, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: This paper presents a study, which examines the role of maintenance regarding improving product quality and companyŽs profitability. The empirical data for this study was drawn from a Slovenian company in order to address the researchproblem. The main results of the case study showed, that 3.22 % of profit could be generated at weaving machine, if all unplanned stoppages and loss of quality due to decrease in the productivity would be prevented. Results also showed that due to productivity improvement, quality rate would be improved for approximately 2 %. These Žndings therefore, indicate that maintenance has impact on product quality and companyŽs profitability. Thus, these findings also acknowledge maintenanceŽs potential of increasing the overall profit.
