Exploring smartphone-related digital divide among South Korean older adults
Hyunsun Yoon, Guiohk Lee, Thi Hong Hai Nguyen, Suyun Lee, Tina Šegota, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: One of the crucial steps towards fully grasping the benefits of smartphone use for all is to explore the existence of a digital divide and its relationship to different outcomes of smartphone use. In so doing, this study explored the smartphone-related digital divide among South Korean older adults in terms of access, use and outcomes. Design/methodology/approach: In-person interviews using questionnaires were conducted to collect the data from a total number of 372 older adults aged 60 and above in eleven community centers in the Seoul Metropolitan area in Korea, 223 of whom owned a smartphone. Results: This study found that most participants use smartphones to communicate with personal relationships and support system. There were, however, differences among groups related to gender, age, and ICT training in terms of the extent of smartphone usage and participation in virtual communities. In three age groups of 60+, 70+ and 80+, a younger cohort and those with ICT training had higher smartphone literacy, harnessing the potential of smartphones. Those who used smartphones to stay connected to their social group and for entertainment showed a lower level of loneliness. Conclusion: This study shows that older adults (i.e., 60+) are not a homogenous group when it comes to using smartphones. There are distinct differences in older smartphone users, especially in the age groups 60+, 70+ and 80+. Older adults should be encouraged to use smartphones for better connectivity with their social groups and entertainment, potentially decreasing their feeling of loneliness.

Association between loneliness, well-being, and life satisfaction before and during the COVID-19 pandemic : a cross-sectional study
Mateja Lorber, Jožica Černe Kolarič, Sergej Kmetec, Barbara Kegl, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Good psychological well-being contributes to a satisfying life, reduces loneliness, and enables a better quality of life. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people worldwide have faced various challenges, which manifest in mental health problems, dissatisfaction with life and increased loneliness. This study aimed to investigate the influence of loneliness on mental well-being and life satisfaction among the adult population during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2021 and January 2022. A total of 664 participants took part in the survey, of whom 484 (73%) were female and 180 (27%) were male. Our results show that loneliness can explain 48% of the total variability in mental well-being and 52% of the variability in life satisfaction. The results show a higher level of loneliness and use of information and communication technology and a lower level of contact with relatives and friends, life satisfaction, and well-being during COVID-19 than they considered before the time of COVID-19. Study findings can help improve loneliness and mental well-being, and, consequently, life satisfaction.

The effectiveness of a psychoeducative group programme regarding relationships in the treatment of sexual offenders : a preliminary study
Nuša Crnkovič, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: At a high-security psychiatric hospital in the UK, the Understanding Intimacy and Relationships (URI) psycho-educative group therapy was developed in an attempt to provide a therapeutic input for interpersonal difficulties displayed by patients with sex offending history. This study aimed to conduct a preliminary evaluation of the URI group effectiveness for sex offenders. Design/Methods/Approach: A longitudinal study with three groups of participants – sex offenders (n = 9) and non-sex offenders (n = 9) that completed the URI group, and the control group (n = 10), which were assessed at two time points was conducted at a high-security psychiatric hospital. Each group filled out three questionnaires at both timepoints – IIP-C, UCLA Loneliness Scale, and ECR-R. Findings: The results suggest a decrease in feelings of loneliness for both groups of patients that completed the URI programme, and a limited reduction of interpersonal difficulties. Results of within-subject changes regarding interpersonal difficulties among patients in URI group did not statistically significantly differ from the result of the control group. Research Limitations/Implications: The most evident limitation of the study is a very small sample size and lack of objective measurement of patients’ difficulties in interpersonal relations. Practical Implications: The findings suggest that the URI programme might have a limited effect on sex offenders due to the unsuccessful implementation of the Risk, Need, Responsivity Model, although several study limitations were present potentially affecting the outcome. Originality/Value: Longitudinal evaluation effectiveness of a clinical intervention for patients with sex offending history at a high-secure psychiatric hospital.

Education of older people for combating their loneliness
Jana Goriup, Branka Čagran, Katja Krošl, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The article discusses education of older people for combating their loneliness, the reasons for it, and its consequences. The current theoretical findings were the reason for the empirical study of the research problem by the authors. In the empirical part, some aspects of the life of older people regarding their residences were compared: among older people living with their relatives, alone, with a partner, or in a retirement home, with special regard to the reasons/causes for residence, and the feeling of loneliness and contacts with relatives. The obtained empirical results showed that older people living alone or in a retirement home are in a worse position compared to those living with relatives or with a partner. The most at risk are older people living alone.

Impact of computer training courses on reduction of loneliness of older people in Finland and Slovenia
Helena Blažun Vošner, Kaija Saranto, Sari Rissanen, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Previous research has shown loneliness as a threat for the quality of life of older peopleč therefore the goal of the intervention in a quasi-experimental study was to evaluate and discuss the self-reported level of loneliness of older people in Finland and Slovenia before and after a computer intervention.Intervention in a quasi-experimental study was conducted among 58older participants at the baseline (M = 72.4 years) and 45 older participants at the follow-up research study (M = 72.9 years). Inferential statistics showed a significant difference in the reduction of loneliness between the countries, and a decreased level of loneliness of older people after completing the computer training course. Although older people experience many age-related problems which may reduce their interest in learning information and communication technology (ICT) skills, it is important that they are computer-proficient, because computer engagement can reduce the level of loneliness of older people and in this way has a positive effect on their quality of life.
