Designing efficient algorithms for logistics management : optimizing timeconstrained vehicle routing
Karlo Bala, Martin Fale, Nebojša Gvozdenović, Tomaž Kramberger, Dejan Brcanov, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: City logistics is a critical component of urban economic development, as it optimizes supply chains, enhances customer satisfaction through reliable deliveries, and minimizes environmental impacts in densely populated areas. This field addresses various challenges, including traffic congestion, environmental concerns, noise pollution, and the crucial need for timely deliveries. Routing and scheduling are central to logistics operations, with modern software integrating time windows to meet precise scheduling demands driven by detailed customer requirements and operational efficiencies. Furthermore, advanced vehicle routing models now effectively simulate real-world factors such as traffic congestion, stochastic travel times, and dynamic product demands. Purpose: This paper aims to develop an algorithm that addresses the routing decisions. Our approach extends to the time dimension, considering travel times and customer service times within predefined time windows. Study design/methodology/approach: The proposed algorithm is structured to execute in iterative phases, aiming to optimize key logistical objectives. In order to generate competitive solutions, we seek to minimize the number of vehicles utilized and overall travel costs. The evaluation of solution space was conducted via Simulated Annealing. Findings/conclusions: The performance of the proposed algorithm, evaluated using the Gehring and Homberger benchmark instances for 200 customers, demonstrates its effectiveness. The algorithm successfully meets the target number of vehicles required, and the associated travel costs are on average within 1% of the best solutions reported in the relevant literature. Limitations/future research: Given the ongoing need for timely solutions from decision-makers, future research endeavors will focus on enhancing the computational efficiency of the algorithm. Additionally, incorporating more time-related features, such as stochastic travel times, could further improve the algorithm's real-time applicability.

Influence of socio-demographic profiles on attitudes toward sustainability and digitalization in logistics and supply chains
Lazar Pavić, Matevž Obrecht, Maja Rosi, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study examines the impact of socio-demographic factors on attitudes towards sustainability and digitalization in logistics and supply chain management. Since a significant gap was identified in this field, study explores how company size, industry sector, and workforce diversity influence strategic planning and operational efficiency within these pivotal sectors of global commerce. The main novelty of the research is to set the roles of technological readiness and knowledge-based factors in shaping organizational responses to sustainability challenges and digital transformation opportunities. By analyzing the correlation between socio-demographic profiles and technological adoption behaviors, the paper aims to provide insights that could help organizations tailor their strategic initiatives to better align with diverse stakeholder needs, enhancing operational efficiency and promoting sustainable practices. This study seeks to fill the gaps in current research by offering a detailed exploration of how sociodemographic diversity impacts the adoption of innovative technologies and sustainability measures within the logistics and supply chain sectors. Results revealed that gender, sector, work position and company size contribute to different understanding and prioritisation of sustainability topics. Managers and team leaders are more focused towards sustainability than the rest of employees and logistics and supply chain sector prefer digitalization over sustainability.

3.
Impact of logistics trends on freight transport development in urban areas
Tomislav Letnik, Katja Hanžič, Giuseppe Luppino, Matej Mencinger, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: City logistics is subject to constant development, generated by new logistics trends and high customers’ expectations. With the aim of creating an effective, acceptable, and sustainable city logistics policy, it is therefore essential to understand logistics trends and their expected impact on the development of urban freight transport in the future. In this paper, we explore and compare the expectations of public authorities, business, and academia regarding the short-, medium-, and longterm impacts of different logistics trends on urban logistics. Following a literature review, the expert survey was used to assess the expected impact and time horizon. According to the respondents, “e-commerce”, “automated vehicles”, “electric vehicles”, “grey power logistics”, “omni-channel logistics”, and the “desire for speed” will have the greatest impact on urban freight transport in the future. An interesting observation concerns some differences of opinion between public and private stakeholders. In general, the business community believes that the identified trends will have a greater impact on urban logistics in a shorter period of time, while public authorities believe that the mentioned trends will have a less strong impact on urban logistics in a longer time scale. This shows the need for more active collaboration between them in the policy-making process.

Distributed energy resource operation analysis using discrete event-simulation
Bojan Rupnik, Dušan Kragelj, Simona Šinko, Tomaž Kramberger, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents a discrete-event simulation (DES) approach for simulation of distributed energy resources (DER). The DES approach provides means to adapt the energy workloads of the system according to any variations of demands that can occur due to temperature regulation requirements or operational demands. Along with a basic model based on a concrete DER configuration, additional models are presented and analysed in order to demonstrate the adaptability of the DES approach to analyse alternative configurations. The models were tested on historical energy consumption data in order to provide the expected workloads and costs. Models are capable to predict the amount of three different energies and cost for the company based on the inside and outside temperatures.

Predicting the probability of cargo theft for individual cases in railway transport
Lorenc Augustyn, Małgorzata Kuźnar, Tone Lerher, Maciej Szkoda, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In the heavy industry, the value of cargo transported by rail is very high. Due to high value, poor security and volume of rail transport, the theft cases are often. The main problem of securing rail transport is predicting the location of a high probability of risk. Because of this, the aim of the presented research was to predict the highest probability of rail cargo theft for areas. It is important to prevent theft cases by better securing the railway lines. To solve that problem the authors' model was developed. The model uses information about past transport cases for the learning process of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Machine Learning (ML).The ANN predicted the probability for 94.7% of the cases of theft and the Machine Learning identified 100% of the cases. This method can be used to develop a support system for securing the rail infrastructure.

Flexible assignment of loading bays for efficient vehicle routing in urban last mile delivery
Tomislav Letnik, Matej Mencinger, Iztok Peruš, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Urban freight deliveries are often subject to many access restrictions which creates the need to establish a system of loading bays and to split the last mile delivery into driving and walking parts. A new model based on hard and soft clustering approach is developed to solve the loading bay assignment problem for efficient vehicle routing and walking in last mile delivery. The flexibility of the model is provided by the soft clustering approach based on different membership degrees of customers to loading bays. Especially for instances with large numbers of loading bays, soft clustering seems to give better results, it leads to higher flexibility of city logistics systems, minimal driving distances, and adequately short walking paths, which contribute to the goal of reaching sustainable urban freight deliveries.

Factors influencing the purchase intention of autonomous cars
Darja Topolšek, Dario Babić, Darko Babić, Tina Cvahte Ojsteršek, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Even though autonomous cars have not yet crossed into the mainstream car market, their adoption seems inevitable, but not much is known about the purchasing intention of ACs and potential influences on it. To better understand the influences of various factors on purchasing intentions of autonomous cars, research using bibliometrics, an online survey and SEM modelling was performed. Based on an analysis of previous research work and the unified theory of acceptance of technology, an empirical model was produced and tested using data obtained from an online survey involving 266 individuals. The goal was to analyse which characteristics of autonomous cars, socio-demographic variables of potential buyers, and buyers' personal and social characteristics could potentially influence the adoption of autonomous cars. The results show that factors of car safety, buyer age and level of education, perceived social influence, anxiety and performance expectancy are significantly correlated to purchasing intention of ACs, while correlations with other factors to purchasing intentions have not been proven.
