Flexible assignment of loading bays for efficient vehicle routing in urban last mile delivery

Opis: Urban freight deliveries are often subject to many access restrictions which creates the need to establish a system of loading bays and to split the last mile delivery into driving and walking parts. A new model based on hard and soft clustering approach is developed to solve the loading bay assignment problem for efficient vehicle routing and walking in last mile delivery. The flexibility of the model is provided by the soft clustering approach based on different membership degrees of customers to loading bays. Especially for instances with large numbers of loading bays, soft clustering seems to give better results, it leads to higher flexibility of city logistics systems, minimal driving distances, and adequately short walking paths, which contribute to the goal of reaching sustainable urban freight deliveries.

Application of the VIKOR method for solving problems in logistics

Opis: When companies make strategic decisions, responsible persons must take into account as many influential parameters as possible so that the solution to the given problem is the most optimal, that is, they make the most appropriate decision. Multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) can find a very large application for solving such very complex and important issues, where it is of particular importance that the company makes the most appropriate decision. Making the optimal decision for a given problem directly affects the financial performance of a given company. In this paper, the VIKOR method will be applied, which until now has not been used to solve problems related to the choice of warehouse location, but is very often and very successfully used to solve various complex problems when applying multi-criteria decision making (MCDM). The purpose of this paper is to show that the VIKOR method can be successfully applied to select the optimal warehouse location for a company that has subsidiaries in multiple locations.

Performance-oriented UWB RTLS decision-making approach

Opis: When introducing new technologies, companies are repeatedly faced with choosing between solutions from different providers. Regardless of all the good technical characteristics of the technology, if it is chosen inappropriately, it can prove to be a cost driver instead of something that brings added value to the system. Aware of this, we considered selecting a real-time location system (RTLS) based on Ultra-wideband technology in the indoor work environment. In practice and theory, it has been proven that the introduction of the RTLS can have highly positive effects on performance and business sustainability indicators. When reviewing the literature, it was noticed that authors solely focus on the technical properties of the systems and prices when giving guidelines on selecting the optimal RTLS. This article aims to provide advanced guidelines for UWB RTLS selection, proposing a phased selection process which is the main novelty proposed and investigated in this research. The guidelines are based on fragmented recommendations in the scientific literature that have been identified, gathered, considered, and reasonably allocated to the advanced performance-oriented phased selection process. In practice, this approach enables decision-makers to choose the most efficient and most appropriate UWB RTLS for specific logistics systems.

Pillars of city spatial sensitivity and their integration into sightseeing routes

Opis: Worldwide, many cities have appropriate and necessary conditions for the development of urban tourism. Some locations, although considered important for local tourist destinations as part of a standard repertoire, do not comply with modern standards. For tourism organisations, it is very important to plan the best possible sightseeing routes with the best sightseeing locations. Using the intuitive approach only, is not enough in the modern tourism industry. The focus of the presented research is an innovative approach to identify the most prosperous urban places that should be included in urban tourist offers. Empirical research was conducted, based on the analyticalmethod ofmentalmapping. For the research location,Maribor city (Slovenia, eu) has been chosen. A sample of 200 respondents was taken. They were asked to draw a city map twice, once for the daytime city and once for the nighttime city. Graphical results obtained reflect a subjective mental spatial idea of individual thinkingmode. Some locations in the city seemto be particularly important and visible. They were named "Pillars of Spatial Sensitivity" or, pss locations. pss locations are extremely suitable to be integrated in a tourist offer as building blocks of sightseeing routes.When processing the research results, 34 pss locations weremore or less frequently detected in Maribor city. 32 of them had different appearance frequency between day and night. Based on these results, it is possible to conclude that modified spatial circumstances affect the perception and utilisation of urban space. The research results make it obvious that spatial sensitivity of tourists depends on time. It is possible to design sightseeing routes adapted to the time component.

Analysis of revitalisation model behaviour for thermal power plants in different geographical areas

Opis: The implementation of renewable sources for electricity production into the energy portfolio of European countries has been a priority in recent years, especially taking into account the current geo-political changes. Even though coal is the fuel of the past, its use cannot be put aside that easily; firstly, because of the high fluctuation of electricity production from renewable sources, and secondly because of the possible negative economic impact on the economy resulting from a change in electricity prices when exiting coal. Based on the Rankine process, the authors of this paper designed a solar tower installation with a heliostat field, which enables electricity production based on solar irradiation. This combination also foresees an additional installation for flue gas desulphurisation. This combination of three processes is named the ‘revitalisation model’ for thermal power plants (TPPs). Based on the computer model and energy market parameters, the authors tested the ‘revitalisation model’ for pessimistic and optimistic scenarios. In the scope of the paper, the authors analyse the performance of the proposed ‘revitalisation model’ for three different geographical locations – Berlin in Germany, Wuwei in China, and Hyderabad in India. The results of the analysis are described and shown graphically.

Socio-economic and geographical factors of development : study case: cities Berana, Andrijevice and Plava

Opis: The paper analyzes the socio-economic and geographic factors for Berane Andrijevice and Plava. The above urban settlements are located in the northeastern part of Montenegro. Isolated traffic and geographical position adversely affects the economic and social development of urban settlements. For the development of cities of greater importance are the geo-morphological and hydrological characteristics of the terrain, the climate and geology, which limits greatly compensates for modern construction techniques. Berane population increased in the period 1948-2003 to 26.81%, while in Andrijevica decreased by 42.48% and 12.43% of Plav. These data suggest to us most vividly, what are the demographic changes occurring in the region. Age groups, due to migration and decreasing birth rate changes and gets unfavorable features - reducing the proportion of younger and older increases the proportion of the population. In both cases, the disturbed age structure has a reverse effect on the movement of the population (the size of reproductive contingent), but also to all other structures of the population (the size of contingent employment, population, compulsory school contingent, contingent dependent population ratio).The main characteristic of modern urban development of cities provide processes of industrialization and urbanization. However, the economic crisis in Montenegro at the beginning of the nineties due to isolation, the economic and social strategy of circling and lack of long term economic development, stopped the social, economic, technical and technological development of urban settlement Berane, Andrijevica and Plav.

Foreign direct investment location choice factors : some evidence for Brazil

Opis: Due to the liberalization and transformation of emerging markets economies, the attractiveness of these countries for foreign direct investors has been rising in the last decades. This paper explores foreign direct investment (FDI) location choice factors of German and Austrian companies in Brazilian regions. We perform a quantitative analysis, based on the Multinomial Nested Logit Model and supplement its findings by the qualitative analysis, based on the semi-structured experts´ interview. The analyses show that investor-nation specific agglomeration, industry specialization, workforce qualification and physical infrastructure were important FDI location choice factors for German and Austrian companies in Brazil. Suggestions for future research of the FDI location choice factors are discussed.

Monte Carlo simulation-based approach to optimal bus stops allocation in the Municipality of Laško

Opis: The paper addresses the problem of optimal bus stop allocation. The aim is to achieve reduction of costs on account of appropriate re-design of the process of obligatory transportation of children from their homes to the corresponding schools in the Laško municipality. The proposed algorithm relies on optimization based on the Monte Carlo simulation procedure. The number of calculated bus stops is required to be minimal possible, which can still assure maximal service area within the prescribed radius, while keeping the minimal walking distances pupils have to go across from their homes to the nearest bus stop and vice versa. The main issues of the proposed algorithm are emphasised and the working mechanism is explained. The presentation of calculated results is given and comparison with some other existing algorithms is provided. The positions of the calculated bus stops are going to be used for the purpose of physical bus stops implementation in order to decrease the current transportation costs.

Množica vozlišč grafa ▫$G$▫ z maksimalno (minimalno) razdaljo je antimedianska (medianska) množica grafa ▫$G$▫. Dokazano je, da za poljubna grafa ▫$G$▫ in ▫$J$▫ ter za poljubno naravno število ▫$r ge 2$▫ obstaja povezani graf ▫$H$▫, tako da je ▫$G$▫ antimedianski in ▫$J$▫ medianski podgraf grafa ▫$H$▫ ter da pri tem velja ▫$d_H(G,J) = r$▫. V primeru, ko sta oba ▫$G$▫ in ▫$J$▫ povezana, lahko dodatno naredimo, da sta ▫$G$▫ in ▫$J$▫ konveksna podgrafa v ▫$H$▫.

The obnoxious center problem on weighted cactus graphs

Opis: The obnoxious center problem in a graph ▫$G$▫ asks for a location on an edge of the graph such that the minimum weighted distance from this point to a vertex of the graph is as large as possible. An algorithm is given which finds the obnoxious center on a weighted cactus graph in ▫$O(cn)$▫ time, where ▫$n$▫ is the number of vertices and ▫$c$▫ is the number of different vertex weights (called marks).
