Representation of Gender in Books for the English Reading Competitions in First and Second Triad of Primary School
Nadja Kotnik, 2018, magistrsko delo

Opis: The purpose of the MA thesis was to analyse 21 easy readers in terms of gender. The easy readers included in the analysis appeared on one of the two reading lists for the English reading competitions, EPI reading badge and Bookworms in the academic year 2015/2016. The books were examined with quantitative, qualitative and linguistic analysis with the aim of revealing gender bias and stereotyping in the characterization of male and female characters. An initial overview of the sample revealed great diversity in the sample – almost half the sample represented re-written versions of older books, while the other half were books with original plots or adaptations based on recent films. With regard to quantitative analysis, an underrepresentation of female characters was identified in the text as well as the illustrations. In general, males predominated in every category that we quantitatively analysed, but there were a few books where this was not the case. The qualitative and linguistic analysis provided mixed results. There were some newer easy readers where progress in terms of defying gender stereotypes and discrimination was noticeable, but some older books expressed evident gender bias.

The effects of career planning education
Marija Turnšek Mikačić, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Research Question (RQ): We employed a qualitative approach to study the effects of career planning education, perceiving it as an effective way to gain a deeper understanding of introductorily-organised career education. Purpose: We researched important areas to formulate a questionnaire for quantitative analysis. Method: We used a qualitative research approach in order to develop a theoretical framework for the exploration, interpretation and identification of the impact of education on career plans, on the changing attitudes towards careers, the raising of self-esteem and perception of personal growth. We used Neuro-linguistic programming as a tool to develop and achieve personal excellence within the career planning. Results: We constructed a paradigmatic model and developed the final theory. By means of qualitative analysis, we identified the elements of design criteria for the construction of the questionnaire; we measured the effects of education on career plans. Organization: The findings of the research will prove useful in personal management and career management in the process of planning and organizing the promotion of individuals within the organizations in accordance with the needs of those organizations. Originality: A career plan as a building block of personal growth, based on the model of career education with the in-built elements and tools of NLP, has been confirmed by the most recent studies in neuroscience. This represents a novelty, and, therefore, this study offers a genuine contribution, and is an indicator of contemporary knowledge, based on the results of the research. Limitations/Future Research: The model of career education and the results of this study open new directions for further research of the influence of career planning on the organisation of companies and their success, which is the phase of the study which was not carried out.

Euphemisms and other expressions referring to tabooed parts of the body
Dejan Ostroško, 2016, magistrsko delo

Opis: The thesis examines lexical and structural features of euphemisms and their use in British newspapers and magazines, focusing on the ones referring to tabooed parts of the human body. The analysis is based on selected articles of online newspapers The Guardian, The Sun, Cosmopolitan and Men’s Health, published between 2010 and 2016. The authors of the articles use euphemisms to avoid unpleasant or inappropriate expressions for intimate parts of the body in order to maintain a public decorum. Many euphemisms are humorous or playful and add to the light-hearted, often humorous style of communication with an audience. They are also used to support sarcasm and irony, particularly in the media with a sensationalistic agenda. The most frequently used euphemisms are generic terms and figurative expressions. We also find diminutives, clippings, borrowings, onomatopoeic and phonemically modified expressions. Their frequency varies according to different topics, newspaper genres and the target audience of the media. They are mostly used in the topics related to fashion, love, sex and celebrity news. They are more frequent in tabloids and gossip magazines than in broadsheet newspapers.
