The conceptual learning of physics in Slovenian secondary schools

Opis: In the last decade, educational researchers have been intensively searching for new, innovative teaching approaches. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has a great didactic potential and project COLOS (Conceptual Learning of Science) encourages the use of ICT in the contemporary educational process. In this paper we present the conceptual learning of Physics. With experimental research we investigated the effectiveness of such learning in Slovenian secondary school. Two groups of third-year students who were enrolled in an introductory Physics course participated in the study. In the experimental group students were taught through the conceptual learning and in the control group a traditional expository instruction was used. We examined the knowledge of students after carrying out lessons specifically on the topic of Electricity. Five thinking processes were assessed - Knowledge (Recall), Analysis, Comparison, Inference and Evaluation. We found that the conceptual learning was more effective than the traditional instruction.

Towards understanding collaborative learning in the social media environment

Opis: ‘Social media’, ‘Web 2.0’, ‘collaborative learning’ and user co-creation are just some of the terms that describe changes in the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in business, private life and society. The changing face of ICT has finally brought about the fulfilment of the term ‘Information Society’ and made an important impact on many fields of research, including collaborative learning. The effective use of ICT in support of group collaboration has been researched and discussed. The effectiveness was attributed to systematically organized and facilitated processes. Nevertheless, the results are not always better when group support systems (GSS) are used in comparison to face-to-face work. In contrast to the well-organized GSS-supported learning process, the social media environment is non-structured, rule-free and even chaotic. In this paper, we research the possibilities of eliciting group knowledge in the group-learning process in a social media environment. A total of 24 students assigned into three groups participated in the three-week long study. Their task was to solve a given research topic by solely using an unfamiliar social media environment and to present their findings after three weeks. Students were observed in their natural learning environment (school, home, the Flowr virtual environment), and their attitudes on collaborative work using social media tools were measured with a questionnaire at the end of the study. The results suggest that non-structured social media environment stimulates self-management of the group. Some insights into trust, motivation and conflicts in the collaborative problem solving are discussed.

Comparative analysis of collaborative and simulation based learning in the management environment

Opis: Purpose of the study is to compare two different approaches to the collaborative problem solving one in a highly controlled laboratory experiment: Optimisation of business politics using business simulator at different experimental condition which reflect different feedback information structure and one in a collaborative environment of the social media, characterised by non-structured, rule-free and even chaotic feedback information. Comparative analyses of participant’s opinion who participate in experiments have been considered in order to find common characteristics relevant for group/collaborative problem solving. Based on these findings a general explanatory causal loop model of collaborative learning during problem solving was built.

Smart software instant reminder for interpersonal communication in foreign country

Opis: Traveling to foreign countries is not a privilege of social elite these days and communication is the basic tool for business. Internet and contemporary schools curriculums have enable us to communicate in global language - English. But for those who is going to reside in other country for longer period of time some basic communication in resident country language is necessary. Every year a lot of foreign students come to our university as student exchange and these are not the only ones. For a period of one semester they do not only study but want to see the country and local tradition. Different language courses are offered and a lot of foreigners attend them. Huge amount of information often overwhelm them and some kind of smart instant reminder is much appreciated. We have attended multiple courses and analyse the most needed topics for smart instant reminder and how make it efficient for foreigners. A software program for portable devices is developed and helps as two ways assistant. It provides language and speech remindersince pronunciation is pinnacle of problems in ourlanguage.

The role of digital competences in electronic education

Opis: The theoretical contribution to the use of modern information and communication technology in educational processes should be discussed critically. The multimedia learning materials and their use at different stages of the educational process in the context of their technical, educational, communicational and aesthetic quality have been reviewed from different perspective. There are many advantages in using multimedia learning materials in education but also disadvantages. Excesive use of electronic learning can lead to the possible unwanted situation in student personal development and upbringing goals may not be achieved. Since interactive multimedia learning materials are becoming more widely used in education they must be added into the teachers qualifications. Only competente teachers can use full potential of multimedia learning materials. How multimedia learning materials in all phases of education is used was tested on primary school teachers. Results are very useful for further teachers' education. The fear that educational process may loose some human quality is real.

Aesthetics and creativity in e-learning material

Opis: We do know that new learning material must be interactive and actively involve students in the learning process. The idea is generally good but the implementation sometimes falls behind. During the analysis of e-learning materials that are publicly available, we discovered some noticeable and subtle flaws in the materials. The contemporary design paradigm of e-learning materials requires products that are didactically useful and aesthetically appropriate. The quality assured development of e-learning materials should be a part of education in all pedagogical studies. Students who study special didactical disciplines should acquire a critical view of the application of e-learning materials through their own prepared presentations. This article presents a discussion on the aesthetic conditions for designing of e-learning materials. The fundamental parameters for the assessment of aesthetically suitable e-learning materials will be reviewed as well as options for involving students in the learning process.

Development of courseware modules for engineering mechanics education

Opis: This paper discusses a pilot course introduced in mechanical engineering education. Since computers nowadays can provide enormous benefits in the learning process, it is important to study which techniques are the best for a particular subject. In our model the students still attend the lectures and tutorials, but these conventional techniques are enriched by parallel, fully computerized, homework assignments and virtual laboratory testing. For the purpose of homework assignments, a new software called ASDN was developed. ASDN enables automatic generation of individual homework tasks, their distribution via e-mail and automatic collecting and processing of results. For a better understanding of the numerical tasks, the LAB-3D module was developed, which enables a detailed visualization of prerecorded laboratory tests. These tests comprise the whole testing process, from the visualization of the physical test, to the analysis of the measured data and comparison with numerically obtained results.
