Intelligent FEA-based design improvement
Marina Novak, Bojan Dolšak, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Structural analysis using the finite element method is an integrate part of the design process for many components. Finite element analysis is the most extensively used numerical analysis in mechanical engineering practice and is incorporated into many computer-aided design systems. The existing commercial software is very helpful when supporting realisation of the analysis process but still fails to provide adequate support during the post-processing phase. The results of analysis should be studied and decisions made regarding the designćs suitability with respect to its engineering specifications. In general, design changes are indispensable and designers need help to design them properly. The prototype of an intelligent rule-based consultative system is being developed by the authors to provide such advice when considering a description of the design structurećs critical area. This system is encoded in Prolog. It can deal with the results of prior strain-stress or thermal analysis. It presents a short list of proposed design changes that should be taken into account when improving the design.

An intelligent system for structural analysis-based design improvements
Marina Novak, Bojan Dolšak, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The goal of the research work presented in this paper was to collect, organize, and write the knowledge and experience about structural analysis-based design improvements into a knowledge base for a consultative advisory intelligent decision support system. The prototype of the system presented proposes possible design changes that should be taken into consideration to improve the design candidate according to the results of a prior stress-strain or thermal analysis. The system can be applied either in the design of new products or as an educational tool.

Computer aided decision support in product design engineering
Marina Novak, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Product design engineering is a complex discipline, which is undergoing a transformation from informal and largely experience-based domain to scientific oriented domain. Computational intelligence can contribute greatly to product design process, as it is becoming more and more evident that adding intelligence to existing computer aids, such as computer aided design systems, can lead to significant improvements in terms of effectiveness and reliability of various tasks within product design engineering. Providing computer aided decision support is one of the computational intelligence methods that proved to be effective in enabling more intelligent and less experience-dependent design performance. In this paper, some of the most crucial areas of product design engineering process that require additional computational intelligence in terms of computer aided decision support are presented together with some examples of intelligent knowledge-based modules applied to this areas.

GAJA
David Potočnik, Bojan Dolšak, Miran Ulbin, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Although the designing of cutting-dies is a complex and experience-based process, it is poorly supported by conventional 3D CAD software. Thus, the majority of design activities, including the (re)modeling of those cutting die-components that are directly responsible for performing shaping operations on a sheet-metal stamping part, traditionally still need to be carried-out repetitively, separately, and manually by the designer. In order to eliminate some of these drawbacks and upgrade the capabilities of conventional 3D CAD software, this paper proposes a new methodology for the development of a parametric system capable of automatically performing a (re)modeling process of compound washer diesć cutting-components. The presented methodology integrates CATIA V5 built-in modules, including Part Design, Assembly Design and Knowledge Advisor, publication mechanism, and compound cutting die-design knowledge. The system developed by this methodology represents an 'intelligent' assembly template composed of two modules 'GAJA1' and 'GAJA2', respectively. 'GAJA1' is responsible for the direct input of the die-design problem regarding the shape, dimensions and material of the stamping part, its extraction in the form of geometric features, and the transferring of relevant design parameters and features to the module 'GAJA2'. 'GAJA2' interprets the current values for the input parameters and automatically performs the modeling process of cutting die-components, using die-design knowledge and the company's internal design and manufacturing standards. Experimental results show that the use of this system significantly shortens the modeling-time for cutting the die-components, improves the modeling-quality, and enables the training of inexperienced designers.

Improving products' ergonomic value using intelligent decision support system
Jasmin Kaljun, Bojan Dolšak, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: During the process of defining suitable design solutions, a designer has to consider a wide range of influential factors. Ergonomics certainly belongs to more complex ones. Less experienced designers could encounter several problems during this design stage. Although some literature can be found about ergonomic design of hand tools, a designer still has to have amassed quite a lot of experience and knowledge in the field of ergonomic, in order to choose and carry out appropriate design and redesign actions. Existing computer tools for ergonomic design are not able to assist a designer with higher level advice within design process. An intelligent decision support system has been developed in order to overcome this bottleneck. This paper presents a knowledge base, containing ergonomic design knowledge specific for hand tools design. A pneumatic hammer handle design is used as a case study to show how ergonomic design knowledge built in the system is used to improve the ergonomic value of the product.

A discussion on new necessity-based method for requirements list elicitation and requirements classification
Špela Brglez, Bojan Dolšak, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Establishing appropriate requirements is essential in early phases of product design for obtaining enough information and in order not to over-constrain the product. Consequences of failing to do so are discussed. An overview of state-of-the-art methodologies for eliciting and classifying requirements is presented. Existing elicitation methods tend not to focus on the requirements content and the classification methods overlook the missing requirements. To overcome this gap a new method for requirements elicitation and classification is proposed. It defines the universally necessary requirements, product- specific necessary requirements and optional requirements. The appropriateness of the method is verified with a case-study on air ventilation register box and expert opinions. The positive contribution of the method is confirmed through evaluation with novice design engineers.
