1. A framework for the evaluation of the cultural heritage information ontologyAndrej Tibaut, Sara Guerra de Oliveira, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The intelligent management of built cultural heritage, including heritage buildings, requires common semantics in the form of standardized ontologies to achieve semantic interoperability. Foundational ontologies should be reused when building new ontologies, as they provide high-level terms; however, candidate foundational ontologies should be evaluated for quality and pitfalls. Simple metrics (e.g., number of concepts) are easy to obtain with existing tools. Complex metrics such as quality of ontology structure, functional adequacy, transferability, reliability, compatibility, maintainability, and operability, are defined in recent ontology evaluation frameworks; however, these do not evaluate interoperability features. The paper proposes an improved framework for an automated ontology evaluation based on the OQuaRE framework. Our approach improved some of the metrics of the OQuaRE framework and introduced three metrics for assessing the interoperability of the ontology in question (Externes, Composability, and Aggregability). In the experimental section, the framework is validated in an evaluation of cultural heritage information ontology (CIDOC CRM—ISO 12217:2014) with the use of new software for ontology evaluation. The detailed results reveal that the ontology is minimally acceptable and that the improved evaluation framework efficiently integrated interoperability metrics. Recommendations for the improvement of the cultural heritage information ontology are described in the Discussion and Conclusions section. 2. eIDAS interoperability and cross-border compliance issuesMarko Hölbl, Boštjan Kežmah, Marko Kompara, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The eIDAS Regulation provides a common foundation for secure electronic interaction between citizens, businesses, and public authorities. We investigated and identified interoperability and cross-border compliance issues in this paper. We have identified the following weaknesses: Organizational independence, remote access to banking services, remote video identification, use of electronic signatures in public administration, commercial access to the eIDAS network, biometric authentication mechanisms, and, finally, some technical issues with the mechanisms used to provide security and authentication in eIDAS nodes. 3. Interoperability of infrastructure and transportation information models: A public transport case studyNenad Čuš Babič, Sara Guerra de Oliveira, Andrej Tibaut, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The duplication of semantic data modelled in different disciplines poses interoperability challenges. Information models that benefit from the application of standards that enable data reusability and prevent redundancy and misuse should be compatible, particularly when different systems are used in the same domain-specific area, as in the case of public transportation. Transportation information models, leading and providing reliable and robust public transport services, can nowadays be enriched with information found in building information models devoted to transportation infrastructure. Therefore, in the present paper, a mapping between the standards and technical specifications that support each modelling approach is explored, analysed, and aligned to maximise the best out of the current common practices used. The information from the Industry Foundation Classes IFC specification-based models complements the conceptual and physical transportation models, where Transmodel and NeTEx are well-established, with accurate (as-built) detailed characteristics of the transportation infrastructure (stop places, quays, entrances, access spaces and equipment as ramps, staircases, and escalators). The extraction of topological information stored in IFC models allows for navigation-network extraction, information about spaces, and passages between spaces. A specific public transport case study focused on a train station is detailed to better corroborate and illustrate the advantages and uses of compatible and complementing modelling approaches. As building-information-modelling awareness and use is growing, the validated mapping approach can benefit from the future application of automation procedures. 4. EOSC interoperability framework : Report from the EOSC Executive Board Working Groups FAIR and ArchitectureOscar Corcho, Magnus Eriksson, Krzysztof Kurowski, Milan Ojsteršek, Christine Choirat, Mark van de Sanden, Frederik Coppens, 2021, znanstvena monografija Opis: This document has been developed by the Interoperability Task Force of the EOSC Executive Board FAIR Working Group, with participation from the Architecture WG. Achieving interoperability within EOSC is essential in order for the federation of services that will compose EOSC to provide added value for service users. In the context of the FAIR principles, interoperability is discussed in relation to the fact that “research data usually need to be integrated with other data; in addition, the data need to interoperate with applications or workflows for analysis, storage, and processing”. Our view on interoperability does not only consider data but also the many other research artefacts that may be used in the context of research activity, such as software code, scientific workflows, laboratory protocols, open hardware designs, etc. It also considers the need to make services and e-infrastructures as interoperable as possible. This document identifies the general principles that should drive the creation of the EOSC Interoperability Framework (EOSC IF), and organises them into the four layers that are commonly considered in other interoperability frameworks (e.g., the European Interoperability Framework - EIF): technical, semantic, organisational and legal interoperability. For each of these layers, a catalogue of problems and needs, as well as challenges and high-level recommendations have been proposed, which should be considered in the further development and implementation of the EOSC IF components. Such requirements and recommendations have been developed after an extensive review of related literature as well as by running interviews with stakeholders from ERICs (European Research Infrastructure Consortia), ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) projects, service providers and research communities. Some examples of such requirements are: “every semantic artefact that is being maintained in EOSC must have sufficient associated documentation, with clear examples of usage and conceptual diagrams”, or “Coarse-grained and fine-grained dataset (and other research object) search tools need to be made available”, etc. The document finally contains a proposal for the management of FAIR Digital Objects in the context of EOSC and a reference architecture for the EOSC Interoperability Framework that is inspired by and extends the European Interoperability Reference Architecture (EIRA), identifying the main building blocks required. The prospects for consumer-oriented social mediaRoger Clarke, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background and Purpose: The term ‘social media’ refers to a cluster of applications and online services that support human interaction and content broadcasting and sharing. Current services are isolated islands or ‘walled gardens’, and are based on a business model that is highly exploitative of individuals and their data.
Design/Methodology/Approach: Surveys of the refereed literature have been undertaken on several occasions during the period 2012-13. Reviews were conducted of social media services that are reasonably described as ‘consumer-oriented’. Media reports on those services were uncovered. The available information was then subjected to analysis, including reflection based on prior research conducted by the author.
Results: Required characteristics of consumer-oriented social media, and barriers to emergence and adoption of such services were identified. That provided a basis for proposing means to overcome those barriers. Key impediments to the emergence of such services were identified, and means of overcoming the impediments outlined.
Conclusion: An alternative, consumer-oriented approach is feasible, involving open architecture, inter-operability and portability features, fair terms and privacy-sensitivity. 6. Interoperability between architectural and structural bim software in the case of a mall projectDrilon Rraci, 2017, magistrsko delo Opis: This master thesis deals with the effect of interoperability between architectural and structural BIM software in the case of a Mall project. The research and most of the work was performed on a BIM model of the Mall project that was modeled using Tekla BIM software.
Since there is still a lack of investigations addressing interoperability issues in the structural engineering domain, this thesis pretends to show the collaboration between architectural and structural BIM software, taking into account a real and complex project.
A general overview and research regarding building information modeling (BIM) and interoperability issues were done in this project. Various case studies were conducted, where the entire BIM model and partial models of the Mall project were transferred from BIM to FEM software using different data exchange methods. Structural analysis and design in the case of the relevant partial models of the Mall project were performed with the help of Dlubal-Structural Engineering Software for Analysis and Design. Such analyses were made in the structural analysis program RFEM, to investigate if those partial models are imported correctly.
The general conclusion based on the used case studies is that data exchange between BIM and FEM software can be useful, but the ease of use depends on both the data exchange method and the way how the relevant model has been created in Tekla BIM software. Referring to these case studies, the most successful data exchange was achieved by using the direct link between BIM and FEM software.
