Road traffic safety in conjunction with in-vehicle ITS
Darja Topolšek, Suzana Hribar, Marjan Sternad, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Interest in Intelligent Transportation Systems comes from the problems caused by traffic congestion, road accidents and air pollution. Traffic congestion continues to grow worldwide as a result of increased motorization, population growth, changes in population density and urbanization. Interest in ITS can also be attributed to reducing road accidents and increasing traffic safety. The most common causes for road accidents are excessive speed, inattentive driving and ignorance of the right-of-way rules. To eliminate these causes, experience, knowledge of traffic regulations and a new car are not enough % vehicle safety systems have to take part as well. Therefore, the European Union issued a directive on the installation of intelligent systems, whose functions are active support during driving, warning the driver in dangerous situations and alerting passengers of the car in case of irregularities in motor function or actions carried out by the driver that may cause danger, such as swerving while falling asleep. These systems help drivers to avoid accidents, and in the event of a collision, an emergency call is automatically made. Furthermore, they can be used to regulate traffic patterns or to reduce engine performance, which would reduce pollution. With these benefits in mind, the EU has indicated to the automotive industry that installation of these new Intelligent Transportation Systems should be mandatory in their new vehicles.

Some ideas about intelligent medical system design
Peter Kokol, Tatjana Welzer-Družovec, 1999, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Mechanical systems increase ouur physical abilities (cranes to lift vast amounts, telescopes to see farther, etc.), but intelligent systems are power tools for heavy lifting in the information world - they complement, extend, and amplify our ability to think and solve problems. In the present paper we will introduce some thoughts and ideas about intelligent medical systems design and the use of MetaMet. A specific design approach constructed with MetaMet will be presented and discussed.

Encyclopedia of complexity and systems science
slovar, enciklopedija, leksikon, priročnik, atlas, zemljevid

Opis: Encyclopedia of Complexity and Systems Science provides an authoritative single source for understanding and applying the concepts of complexity theory together with the tools and measures for analyzing complex systems in all fields of science and engineering. The science and tools of complexity and systems science include theories of self-organization, complex systems, synergetics, dynamical systems, turbulence, catastrophes, instabilities, nonlinearity, stochastic processes, chaos, neural networks, cellular automata, adaptive systems, and genetic algorithms. Examples of near-term problems and major unknowns that can be approached through complexity and systems science include: The structure, history and future of the universe; the biological basis of consciousness; the integration of genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics as systems biology; human longevity limits; the limits of computing; sustainability of life on earth; predictability, dynamics and extent of earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters; the dynamics of turbulent flows; lasers or fluids in physics, microprocessor design; macromolecular assembly in chemistry and biophysics; brain functions in cognitive neuroscience; climate change; ecosystem management; traffic management; and business cycles. All these seemingly quite different kinds of structure formation have a number of important features and underlying structures in common. These deep structural similarities can be exploited to transfer analytical methods and understanding from one field to another. This unique work will extend the influence of complexity and system science to a much wider audience than has been possible to date.

Prediction of total manufacturing costs for stamping tool on the basis of CAD-model of finished product
Mirko Ficko, Igor Drstvenšek, Miran Brezočnik, Jože Balič, Boštjan Vaupotič, 2005, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: One of the orientations of the tool-making industry is towards shortening the time from enquiry to the supply of tools. The tool-making shops must prepare within the shortest possible time an offer for the manufacturer of the tool based on the enquiry in the form of the CAD-model of the final product. For preparation of a proper offer, the values of certain technological features occurring in the manufacture of the tool are needed. Most frequently the tool manufacturer is interested in total cost for manufacture of the tool. Because of lack of time for making a detailed analysis the total costs of tool manufacture are predicted by the expert on the basis of the experience gathered during several years of work in this area. In our work, we conceived an intelligent system for predicting of total cost of the tool manufacture. We limited ourselves to tools for manufacture of sheet metal products by stamping; the system is based on the concept of case-based reasoning. On the basis of target and source cases, the system prepares the prediction of costs. The target case is the CAD-model in whose costs we are interested, whereas the source cases are the CAD-model of products, for which the tools had already been made, and the relevant total costs are known. The system first abstracts from CAD-models the geometrical features, and then it calculates the similarities between the source cases and target case. Then the most similar cases are used for preparation of prediction by genetic programming method. The genetic programming method provides the model connecting the individual geometrical features with total costs searched for. In the experimental work, we made a system adapted for predicting of tool costs used for tool manufacture on the basis of a theoretic model. The results show that the quality of predictions made by the intelligent system is comparable to the quality assured by the experienced expert.

Intelligent process planning for competitive engineering
Valentina Gečevska, Franc Čuš, 2010, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Process planning is one of the key activities for product design and manufacturing. The impact of process plans on all phases of product design and manufacture requires high level of interaction of different activities and close integration of them into a coherent system. This paper presents a process model of product development with manufacturing approach based on intelligent process planning techniques with focus on optimal selection of manufacturing parameters. Some derivations of the computing model for analysis of machining conditions by optimal determination of the cutting parameters in multi-pass NC machining activities are made with implementation of new evolutionary computation techniques. Genetic Algorithm (GA) based optimization method and deterministic optimization method (DO) are developed and then implementations into real manufacturing process planning for new product developed are analyzed. The results showed that both the developed optimization methods (GA and DO), especially GA, are effective methods for solving multi-objective optimization problems during the manufacturing process planning and cutting parameters selection.

Design of row-based flexible manufacturing system with evolutionary computation
Mirko Ficko, Jože Balič, 2008, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: This paper discusses design of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) in one or multiple rows. Evolutionary computation, particularly genetic algorithms (GAs) proved to be successful in search of optimal solution for this type of problems. The model of solution, the most suitable way of coding the solutions into the organisms and the selected evolutionary and genetic operators are presented. In this connection, the most favourable number of rows and the sequence of devices in the individual row are established by means of genetic algorithms (GAs). In the end the test results of the application made and the analysis are discussed.

Intelligent support to specific design aspects
Urška Sancin, Jasmin Kaljun, Bojan Dolšak, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Due to increased rivalry on the market, some specific design aspects like the use of modern plastics materials, ergonomics and aesthetics are becoming more important and are not kept in the background any more in correlation with functionality and economic aspect of the product. Design engineer faces many dilemmas while designing new products as a single person is not able to possess a wide spectrum of knowledge needed for optimal design solutions. At this point designer have to rely on his or her experience and on the knowledge of the expert team involved in the project. The fundamental purpose of the research presented in this paper is to make the product development process less experience dependent. The main goal of thematically oriented research is to develop intelligent advisory system with integrated modules forsome specific design aspects.
