Business Intelligence system implementation at a health services provider

Opis: Business Intelligence (BI) is important to any company wanting not only to improve their processes and data quality, but above all their decision-making. The scale of BI systems implementations ranges from small to large. A rule of thumb is that it is the end users who define the scope of an implemented BI solution. After all, a BI project and solution can only be considered successful if they are used after completion. There are several vendors of BI tools and solutions who share a basic foundation, yet whose implemented solutions differ in approach, flexibility and enhancement options. However, they all share the challenges faced by the BI industry since its inception, from Big Data to Predictive Analytics and Data Discovery, to name just a few. In this study, an American vendor of BI tools and solutions, Information Builders, is examined. They have been a market player for forty years and have influenced the development of this industry both directly and indirectly. The main part of the research comprises a case study of a BI system implementation at a health services provider in the Netherlands. By providing insight into a BI implementation project and its successes and failures, the study is able to analyse every aspect of its management and consider the possibilities and functionalities offered by Information Builders’ WebFOCUS platform to solution developers and end users. Furthermore, the study analyses influence of Information Builders’ best practice on the success of the BI implementation project.

Adaptive self-learning controller design for feedrate maximization of machining process

Opis: An adaptive control system is built which controlling the cutting force and maintaining constant roughness of the surface being milled by digital adaptation of cutting parameters. The paper discusses the use of combining the methods of neural networks, fuzzy logic and PSO evolutionary strategy (Particle Swarm Optimization) in modeling and adaptively controlling the process of end milling. An overall approach of hybrid modeling of cutting process (ANfis-system), used for working out the CNC milling simulator has been prepared. The basic control design is based on the control scheme (UNKS) consisting of two neural identificators of the process dynamics and primary regulator. Experiments have confirmed efficiency of the adaptive control system, which is reflected in improved surface quality and decreased tool wear.

Design of row-based flexible manufacturing system with evolutionary computation

Opis: This paper discusses design of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) in one or multiple rows. Evolutionary computation, particularly genetic algorithms (GAs) proved to be successful in search of optimal solution for this type of problems. The model of solution, the most suitable way of coding the solutions into the organisms and the selected evolutionary and genetic operators are presented. In this connection, the most favourable number of rows and the sequence of devices in the individual row are established by means of genetic algorithms (GAs). In the end the test results of the application made and the analysis are discussed.

Tool cutting force modeling in ball-end milling using multilevel perceptron

Opis: This paper uses the artificial neural networks (ANNs) approach to evolve an efficient model for estimation of cutting forces, based on a set of input cutting conditions. A neural network algorithms are developed for use as a direct modeling method, to predict forces for ball-end milling operation. Supervised neural networks are used to successfully estimate the cutting forces developed during end milling process. The training of the networks is preformed with experimental machining data. The predictive capability of using analytical and neural network approaches are compared using statistics, which showed that neural network predictions for three cutting force components were for 4% closer to the experimental measurements, compared to 11% using analytical method. Exhaustive experimentation is conduced to develop the model and to validate it. The milling experiments prove that this model can predict accurately the cutting forces in three Cartesian directions.The force model can be used for simulation purposes and for defining threshold values in cutting tool condition monitoring system.

Modeling of forming efficiency using genetic programming

Opis: This paper proposes new approach for modeling of various processes in metal-forming industry. As an example, we demonstrate the use of genetic programming (GP) for modeling of forming efficiency. The forming efficiency is a basis for determination of yield stress which is the fundamental characteristic of metallic materials. Several different genetically evolved models for forming efficiency on the basis of experimental data for learning were discovered. The obtained models (equations) differ in size, shape, complexity and precision of solutions. In one run out of many runs of our GP system the well-known equation of Siebel was obtained. This fact leads us to opinion that GP is a very powerful evolutionary optimization method appropriate not only for modeling of forming efficiency but also for modeling of many other processes in metal-forming industry.

VZPOSTAVITEV PODATKOVNEGA SKLADIŠČA IN POROČILNEGA SISTEMA

Opis: Diplomsko delo obravnava problem poročanja vrhnjemu menedžmentu v večjem slovenskem podjetju, ki ima svojo mrežo hčerinskih družb, predstavništev in agentov razpršeno po Evropi in Bližnjem vzhodu. Zaradi neenotnega vira podatkov je postalo poročanje o poslovanju matične in vseh odvisnih družb praktično nemogoče, saj analitiki niso več uspeli obvladovati povečane količine podatkov. Še težje ali nemogoče je bilo te podatke pravočasno združiti in analizirati ter vodstvu predlagati sprejem ustreznih ukrepov. Potrebno je bilo poiskati rešitev za poenostavitev in poenotenje poročanja ter za pravočasno dostavo pomembnih in pravih informacij odločevalcem v podjetju. Rešitev smo podali z vzpostavitvijo novega podatkovnega skladišča, ki združuje vse pomembne vire informacij v skupini. Nad tem podatkovnim skladiščem smo zgradili sistem za poročanje. Preučili smo problem obstoječega stanja. Izvedli smo temeljito analizo in z vodstvom podjetja ter znjanjskimi delavci uskladili pričakovane rezultate. Prav tako smo rezultate razvoja rešitve na področju poročanja preverjali sproti in po potrebi prilagajali. Rezultat tega dela sta novo podatkovno skladišče in poročilni sistem, ki je razširljiv ter prilagodljiv tudi za nova področja poročanja. V zaključku smo se dotaknili tudi možnosti nadaljnjega razvoja uvedenega sistema. Uporabniki so začutili velik potencial in koristi te rešitve. Razvoj rešitev se tako nadaljuje, opazen pa je tudi pozitiven rezultat pri poslovanju organizacije.

Spatial rotation and recognizing emotions : gender related differences in brain activity

Opis: In three experiments, gender and ability (performance and emotional intelligence) related differences in brain activity - assessed with EEG methodology - while respondents were solving a spatial rotation tasks and identifying emotions in faces were investigated. The most robust gender related difference in brain activity was observed in the lower-2 alpha band. Males and females displayed an inverse IQ-activation relationship in just that domain in which they usually perform better: females in the emotional intelligence domain, and males in the visuospatial ability domain. A similar pattern of brain activity could also be observed for the male/female respondents with different levels of performance and emotional IQ. It was suggested that high ability representatives of both genders to some extent compensate for their inferior problem solving skills (males in emotional tasks and females in spatial rotation tasks) by increasing their level of attention.
