Toward an economy of wellbeing : the economic impact of the Welsh healthcare sector

Opis: Population health and wellbeing is both a result, as well as a driver, of economic development and prosperity on global, European, national and sub-national (local) levels. Wales, one of the four United Kingdom (UK) nations, has shown a long-term commitment to sustainable development and achieving prosperity for all, providing a good example of both national and sub-national level, which can be useful for other European countries and regions. In this paper, the economic importance of the healthcare sector to the Welsh economy is explored. We use a large number of data sources for the UK and Welsh economy to derive an economic model for 2017. We estimate output, income, employment, value-added, and import multipliers of the healthcare sector. Results suggest that the healthcare sector has an above average contribution in four explored economic aspects of the Welsh economy (output, income, employment, value-added), according to its impact on the surrounding economic ecosystem. Also, it is below average regarding leaking through imports. The multipliers' values offer empirical evidence when deciding on alternative policy actions. Such actions can be used as a stimulus for encouraging regional development and post-COVID economic recovery. Our study refers to the Welsh healthcare sector's economic impact as a whole. Therefore, we suggest investigating the economic impact of individual healthcare providers in the future.

Effects of jaw clenching and mental stress on persistent inward currents estimated by two different methods

Opis: Spinal motoneuron firing depends greatly on persistent inward currents (PICs), which in turn are facilitated by the neuromodulators serotonin and noradrenaline. The aim of this study was to determine whether jaw clenching (JC) and mental stress (MS), which may increase neuromodulator release, facilitate PICs in human motoneurons. The paired motor unit (MU) technique was used to estimate PIC contribution to motoneuron firing. Surface electromyograms were collected using a 32-channel matrix on gastrocnemius medialis (GM) during voluntary, ramp, plantar flexor contractions. MU discharges were identified, and delta frequency (ΔF), a measure of recruitment–derecruitment hysteresis, was calculated. Additionally, another technique was used (VibStim) that evokes involuntary contractions that persist after cessation of combined Achilles tendon vibration and triceps surae neuromuscular electrical stimulation. VibStim measures of plantar flexor torque and soleus activity may reflect PIC activation. ΔF was not significantly altered by JC (p = .679, n = 18, 9 females) or MS (p = .147, n = 14, 5 females). However, all VibStim variables quantifying involuntary torque and muscle activity during and after vibration cessation were significantly increased in JC (p < .011, n = 20, 10 females) and some, but not all, increased in MS (p = .017–.05, n = 19, 10 females). JC and MS significantly increased the magnitude of involuntary contractions (VibStim) but had no effect on GM ΔF during voluntary contractions. Effects of increased neuromodulator release on PIC contribution to motoneuron firing might differ between synergists or be context dependent. Based on these data, the background level of voluntary contraction and, hence, both neuromodulation and ionotropic inputs could influence neuromodulatory PIC enhancement.

Current control of battery pack modules in parallel connection according to SoC

Opis: Electric vehicles, especially cars, have been in the spotlight for some time now. In the focus of environmentalists, engineers, users, media, etc. With the growth and advancement of the market for such vehicles, other electric vehicles are also focussing on. One of such vehicles is boats, particularly smaller boats up to 8–10 meters in length. Of course, the biggest problem here is charging. The general idea is to use battery modules that can be easily carried and enable hot swapping. This paper investigates scenarios and simulations of the control system for hot swapping of the battery module. Simulations of connection of two and three battery modules to parallel operation and current control are presented in this paper, as well as applied control rules.

NARX Deep Convolutional Fuzzy System for Modelling Nonlinear Dynamic Processes

Opis: This paper presents a new approach for modelling nonlinear dynamic processes (NDP). It is based on a nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous (NARX) inputs model structure and a deep convolutional fuzzy system (DCFS). The DCFS is a hierarchical fuzzy structure, which can overcome the deficiency of general fuzzy systems when facing high dimensional data. For relieving the curse of dimensionality, as well as improving approximation performance of fuzzy models, we propose combining the NARX with the DCFS to provide a good approximation of the complex nonlinear dynamic behavior and a fast-training algorithm with ensured convergence. There are three NARX DCFS structures proposed, and the appropriate training algorithm is adapted. Evaluations were performed on a popular benchmark—Box and Jenkin’s gas furnace data set and the four nonlinear dynamic test systems. The experiments show that the proposed NARX DCFS method can be successfully used to identify nonlinear dynamic systems based on external dynamics structures and nonlinear static approximators.

Posodabljanje input-output tabel - primer tabel za Slovenijo

Opis: Input-output tabele so tabele, ki opisujejo opazovano gospodarstvo. Ker je originalen postopek nastajanja drag in dolgotrajen, se kot alternativen način pridobivanja novih tabel pojavljajo posodabljanja že obstoječih tabel nekega preteklega leta. V literaturi obstaja veliko metod posodabljanja input-output tabel. V magistrskem delu navedemo obstoječe metode in izpostavimo v praksi najbolj uporabljeno RAS metodo ter njene različice. V sklopu magistrskega dela izdelamo programsko kodo izbrane RAS metode posodabljanja input-output tabel v Mathlabu in jo izvedemo na treh različnih vhodnih podatkih za Slovenijo. Izbrana metoda rešitve omejitvenega matričnega problema je iterativen postopek, ki izmenično posodablja stolpce in vrstice, dokler ne zadostujejo podanim robnim omejitvam. Rezultati potrdijo hipotezo, da se z zniževanjem ustavitvenega pogoja poveča število potrebnih iteracij za konvergiranje. Hkrati domnevamo, da večji del ocen vrednosti naredi napako manjšo od 65 %.

O PROBLEH UJEMANJA POVPRAŠEVANJA IN PONUDBE

Opis: Mikroekonomija se ukvarja z analizo posameznih ekonomskih objektov, makroekonomija pa z delovanjem ekonomije kot celote. Pri prvi se s problemi ujemanja srečujemo pri tržnem mehanizmu, ko določamo ravnotežno ceno, pri drugi pa pri sektorski analizi, ko analiziramo celotno strukturo gospodarstva. V obeh primerih si pomagamo z linearno algebro, ki nam omogoči pregledno in natančno reševanje problema.

Analysis of the influence of car-following input parameters on the modelled travelling time

Opis: The calibration process is a basic condition of traffic model application in local conditions. The choice of input parameters, which are used in calibration process, influences the success of the calibration process itself; therefore, the goal is to choose parameters with a larger influence on the modelling process. This paper offers a detailed analysis of car-following input parameters and their influence on the modelled travelling time. The experimental basis was a one-lane roundabout, and the tool used for traffic simulation was the VISSIM microsimulation traffic model. The results show that the car-following input parameters should be a part of the set of input parameters, which will enter the process of calibration. The examined car-following input parameters affect the capacity of intersections and results show that it is necessary to revise the range of input values of one of the observed car-following input parameters.

VLOGA KLJUČNIH SEKTORJEV PRI PREMAGOVANJU GOSPODARSKE KRIZE - ANALIZA DRŽAV V EVROPSKI UNIJI

Opis: V obsežni raziskavi smo identificirali ključne sektorje gospodarstev držav EU. Sektorske multiplikatorje smo lahko izračunali za 16 držav članic EU(Avstrijo, Belgijo, Češko, Nemčijo, Dansko, Finsko, Francijo, Veliko Britanijo, Grčijo, Irsko, Italijo, Litvo, Nizozemsko, Poljsko, Portugalsko in Slovenijo). Medtem ko ni bilo možno izračunati sektorskih multiplikatorjev za 12 držav članic EU(Bolgarijo, Ciper, Estonijo, Hrvaško, Latvijo, Luksemburg, Madžarsko, Malto, Romunijo, Slovaško, Španijo in Švedsko), ker matrike niso imele definiranega inverza. V analizi smo ugotovili, da so najbolj odporni na krizo sektorji, ki so v daljšem obdobju v opazovanem gospodarstvu imeli največji vpliv na povezanost za nazaj in povezanost za naprej. V obdobju od leta 2001 do 2011 smo analizirali ključne sektorje v opazovanih 16 državah članicah EU. Ugotavljali smo podobnosti in razlike v spreminjanju medsektorskih povezav in s tem strukture gospodarstva v državah članicah Evropske unije. Identificirali smo tiste sektorje, ki so najbolj pripomogli , da so opazovane države članice Evropske unije čim prej okrevale po gospodarski in finančni krizi.
