Rural geography in Slovenia : an overview

Place as overlap between the interests of regional geography and marketing

Opis: The new challenges presented by a place have launched a marketing research initiative that integrates various marketing approaches requiring not only a wide variety of knowledge in humanities, social sciences, and business disciplines, but also comprehension of the entire complexity of its product – a place. The intricacy of its very essence and nature has probably been one of the reasons why no consensus exists so far on how to define the marketing of place. Here is the space for geography to which a place represents an object of research, and to which a place is also part of the method of how to perform such research. This paper is dedicated to discussion about the issues of applicability of the concept of place in territorial marketing that forms the contact zone between regional geography and marketing.

Geographical marginality in Slovenia from the point of demographical indicators

Opis: We start the paper with a terminological discussion about globalization and geographical marginality. Then we present an analysis that intends to find out whether the demographic data at municipal level can reveal us marginal regions (municipalities). We divided all municipalities according to their centrality into the group of predominantly central and predominantly peripheral. We calculated 5 demographic indicators and according to the average value defined municipalities that were essentially different (potentially marginal). The analysis shows that demographic indicators are not reliable and not an appropriate tool for the definition of marginal regions.

The Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian adnominal possessive dative at the syntax-pragmatics interface

Opis: In Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian, the adnominal possessive dative (APD) construction is used alongside the nominal adjectival construction to express possession. APD usage is double-edged – i.e., there are both issues of sociolinguistics/perceptual dialectology involved as well as more formal syntactic- pragmatic ones. My respondents consistently labeled APD usage as “archaic,” “old-fashioned,” “characteristic of the uneducated,” or “country-talk”. However, judging by very similar acceptance levels of APDs in particular contexts in all dialects, it appears that semantic role of the possessor and the level of contextual effects and processing load involved in interpreting possessive constructions weigh heavily on their acceptance. Therefore, I offer a model that attempts to capture APD usage in terms of a set of hierarchical relationships between the “possessor” and the “possessed”.

Dialect materials in the Estonian etymological dictionary

Opis: Estonian Etymological Dictionary being compiled at the Institute of the Estonian Language. A limited number of dialect words will be included in the headword list of the dictionary. Dialect data may be vital for etymologization as well. In the case of genuine words and older loanwords, the archaic phonological traits that have survived in dialects are essential; in the case of more recent loanwords, the dialectal variants show different degrees of adaptation. Sometimes the areal distribution of a word may prove a valuable cue to its original background. Etymologization may also be based on the dialectal meaning of a word. A specific group consists of dialect words adopted into standard usage in a different sense as technical terms.

The evaluation of the role of teaching aids in stimulating pupils' activation in geography

Opis: This paper discusses the methodological procedures of application of teaching aids through the subjects: World around us, Nature and Society and Geography, as well as an adequate choice of teaching resources that encourage students to earn a permanent knowledge. The idea is to use teaching aids in active teaching and to turn it into the practical use of the material, in order to efficiently adopt the fundamental knowledge about the nature of science in the classroom teaching. The procedures are identified, which are especially important from the point of maximum achievements in teaching the use of teaching aids, and especially significant for subjects the World around us, Nature and Society and Geography. The aim of this study was to determine the importance of teaching aids in active teaching, as well as whether the student becomes mentally active participant in the educational process using teaching aids. The study involved class teachers (154) who evaluated the importance of teaching resources for permanent adoption of knowledge of students. In addition, the survey was analyzed and different types of learning resources in terms of their values in the activation of thinking in students were analyzed as well. This survey has confirmed the hypothesis about the importance of teaching aids for thoughtful activation of the students.

Opportunities for incorporating geography into the river basin management

Opis: Geography in Slovenia is not sufficiently involved in the management of river basins, since it has not won its place in the interdisciplinary education of water managers and has also not been sufficiently present in practice. We designed a model of geographical approach to integrated management of water resources which is presented on the example of the Sotla river basin. We considered the river basin with its inner diversity and heterogeneity as a basic spatial unit of management. To realize our commitments to the environment we need their spatial placement that can be offered by geography. This approach would be a supplement to present sustainable strategies of water management and it could be applied into practice by appropriate study programmes in geography.

Functional changes in Tezno, the industrial zone in Maribor

Opis: The article discusses the impact of the initial establishment of TAM (Tovarna avtomobilov in motorjev Maribor) on forming of the industrial zone Tezno, Maribor. Both industrialization and planning economy played a key role in forming of a classic industrial zone, which represented an area of manufacturing activities. In the 1970s and 1980s, Maribor economy made more than a half of total income in secondary sector. Under the influence of socioeconomic changes, restructuring economies and its adaptation to the requirements of the common European market in 1990s influenced on functionaly changes of the industrial zone and on forming of the new business and production zone. The city acceded to the revitalisation of the industrial zone into a perspective Business and production zone Tezno.

Interdisciplinary methodological approach to the process of brownfield revitalisation of traditional industrial areas

Opis: Traditional industrial regions in the South-East Europe (SEE) represent an underexplored economic value. Revitalisation is delayed and hindered because of legal, financial, environmental and image problems. This weakens competitive investment position for cities and for SEE as a European region. This paper aims at presenting interdisciplinary methodological approach used in a brownfield revitalisation research project. The research work methodology applies the endogenous approach ("bottom up") on a basis of newly defined land use category of brownfields by the local community. Geography science enjoys an advantage of complexity of understanding spatial issues. This enables geographers to coordinate and harmonize interests between the owners, stakeholders, legislation and human resources. In addition to geographical areas (economic, traffic, demographic, environmental and regional geography) directly involved in the project applicative research, this also includes collaboration of architects, lawyers and economists. The form of applicative research work presented is being developed within the international Revitalisation of Traditional Industrial Areas in South-East Europe (ReTInA) project. The project is funded in the context of the SEE European Transnational Cooperation Programme 2009/12, involving ten partners from seven countries. The main result of the project will be the new methodology and tools to boost brownfield revitalisation in the municipalities and in old industrial areas of SEE region.

New challenges of geography in cultural and institutional association within the European higher education area

Opis: University of Maribor has in the last few years been an active partner in establishing and encouraging regional cooperation within Danube Rector's network and Alpe-Adria network. Geographers have helped form the policy and concepts of regional partnership and connecting of spatial projects and initiatives, particularly in the regions of Central Europe and Western Balkans. An example of good practice is the Central European network GEOREGNET, which enables mobility of professors and students and contributes to the understanding among people and cooperation in higher education. The new challenges of Geography in the establishment of Euroregions and formation of a European cultural area represent a new understanding of the importance of creating a network of institutional cooperation and education of geographers. Research and pedagogical work in the field of Geography enable development and implementation of internationally comparable post-graduate study programmes and research programmes. With the establishment of University Centre for Euro-Mediterranean Studies, Slovenia has assumed the responsibility and an active role in encouraging the cooperation of higher education institutions in order to accomplish the goals of the European higher education area and strengthen intercultural understanding, not only between the countries of Euro-Mediterranean region, but also in the sense of global regional associations.
