1. Margaret Atwood, world-famous but yet to be discovered by many Slovene readersTomaž Onič, Michelle Gadpaille, Jason Blake, Tjaša Mohar, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Margaret Atwood is the only Canadian author whose 80th birthday in 2019 was celebrated by the global academic community. This is not surprising, as she is the most famous Canadian writer, popular also outside literary circles. On this occasion, Slovene Canadianists organized a literary event at the Maribor University Library, which presented an outline of Atwood’s oeuvre and a selection of translated poems and excerpts of prose texts; some of these were translated especially for the event. Of Atwood’s rich and varied oeuvre, only eight novels, a few short fiction pieces and some thirty poems have been translated into Slovene. This article thus aims at presenting those aspects of Atwood’s work which are less know to Slovene readers. It is no secret that Atwood is often labelled a feminist writer, mostly on account of The Handmaid’s Tale and the TV series based on the novel. However, many Slovene readers may not know that she also writes poetry, short fiction, non-fiction and children’s literature, that she is a committed environmentalist, and that she discussed the problem of “Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth” in a prestigious lecture series. There are not many authors who master as many genres as Atwood and who are so well-received by readers and critics alike. The latter is true of Atwood also in Slovenia, and we can only hope that Slovene publishers will make more of Atwood’s work available to Slovene readers. All the more so since Atwood has no plans to end her career: just before her 80th birthday she was on a tour in Europe promoting her latest novel, The Testaments, and she would have continued touring in 2020 were it not for the COVID pandemic. 3. Genre and Multimodality in Primary School EFL Textbooks : master's thesisSara Škerget, 2023, magistrsko delo Opis: The master's thesis examines the features of textual and visual material included in primary school EFL textbooks. The genre theory according to the Sydney School is introduced in the theoretical part. The features of authentic and simplified texts are also presented. The principles of discourse and multimodal analysis, which served as a basis for our analysis, are outlined. The analysis includes twenty texts with the accompanying visual material selected from the Messages (EFL) textbooks for lower-secondary students aged 11 to 14 years created by English authors Diana Goodey and Noel Goodey in cooperation with others. The study presented in this thesis focuses on the analysis of selected texts from these textbooks with regard to three dimensions of register: field, i.e., the entities, objects, concepts, and activities represented in the texts and their accompanying images; tone, i.e., the formality or informality of texts and images; and mode, i.e., the dependence of texts and images on the context. The study also examines the prevailing genres and text-image relations in the analysed material. 4. Songs as elements in the generic structure of film musicalsKatja Plemenitaš, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The paper focuses on the description of film musicals as a subgenre of the genre family of musicals. Their dramatic structure is examined in terms of the generic elements that constitute the progression of a story expressed through the combination of spoken dialogue, songs and dance. The function of songs in the generic structure of film musicals is examined in the framework of the systemic-functional theory of register and genre. Special attention is given to the role of songs in the unfolding of the narrative. The theoretical observations about the role of songs in the register and genre of film musicals are then illustrated with an analysis of the use of songs in the TV musical High School Musical 2.
