Measurements of Small Frequency Differences by Dual Mode 4 MHz Quartz Sensors
Vojko Matko, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: We proposed a method for measuring frequency differences of the order of a few Hz with an experimental error lower than 0.0001% by using two 4 MHz quartz oscillators, the frequencies of which are very close (a few 10 Hz difference) due to the dual mode operation (differential mode with two temperature-compensated signal frequencies or a mode with one signal and one reference frequency). We compared the existing methods for measuring frequency differences with the new method which is based on counting the number of transitions through zero within one beat period of the signal. The measuring procedure requires equal experimental conditions (temperature, pressure, humidity, parasitic impedances etc.) for both quartz oscillators. To ensure equal resonant conditions for oscillation two quartz crystals are needed, which form a temperature pair. The frequencies and resonant conditions of both oscillators must be almost equal, which is achieved by an external inductance or capacitance. In such a way, we minimized all the external effects and ensured highly stable oscillations and high sensitivity of the differential sensors. The counter detects one beat period by an external gate signal former. By using the method of counting transitions through zero within one beat period, we reduced the measuring error by three orders of magnitude, compared to the existing methods.

Optimal control of gain and offset in direct conversion receivers : magistrsko delo
Amadej Maurič, 2023, magistrsko delo

Opis: In the master’s thesis, the development and implementation of optimal control for direct conversion receiver is presented. A background overview of direct conversion receivers, in-phase and quadrature mixers, sampling theory, control theories, adaptive systems, and optimal control is given. The development of a system model which is later used in simulations is also presented. Optimal control is achieved through standard control techniques, such as feedback and feedforward control, with error functions giving restrictions. Information to feed the optimal control is acquired by the system through the analog converters to the digital converters, digital to analog converters, and received signal strength indicators. For the development and testing of optimal control, MATLAB environment was used. Simulations and presentation of the results were also done in MATLAB. Limitations, exact operation, and comments were given throughout the thesis

Analysis and improvements of the mechanisms for cross-border interchange and activation of the regulating reserves : doctoral dissertation
Marcel Topler, 2022, doktorska disertacija

Opis: This Doctoral Thesis deals with the mechanisms for cross-border interchange and activation of the regulating reserves (RRs), i.e., Imbalance Netting Process (INP) and Cross-Border Activation of the RRs (CBRR), between participating Control Areas (CAs), to reduce the costs of balancing energy. The main objective of INP is to interchange the RRs between participating CAs with opposite signs of interchange power variation. In comparison, the main objective of CBRR is to activate the RRs in participating CAs with the same signs of interchange power variation. Both the INP and CBRR aim to release the RRs and reduce balancing energy as part of the power system's safe operation. The Thesis's main objective is to analyze the impact of the mechanisms for cross-border interchange and activation of the RRs on mutual oscillations of participating CAs and stability for small disturbances. The Thesis's secondary objective is to analyze the impact of the INP and CBRR on frequency quality, on the provision of Load-Frequency Control (LFC), on balancing energy and unintended exchange of energies between participating CAs. Frequency quality in Continental Europe (CE) has been declining in recent years, so it is important that the mechanisms for cross-border interchange and activation of the RRs do not further impair its quality. Both the classic INP and CBRR include a frequency-dependent contribution and, therefore, inherently affect the frequency response of the participating CAs, which is not discussed in the literature. Thus, the impact of the classic INP and CBRR on frequency quality and the provision of LFC is thoroughly evaluated with dynamic simulations of a three-CA test system and eigenvalue analysis of a two-CA system. It is demonstrated that both the classic INP and CBRR reduce the damping of the entire power system. Therefore, a modified implementation of the classic INP and CBRR is presented, and improved INP and CBRR are proposed, which have no impact on the mutual oscillations of participating CAs and stability for small disturbances. Furthermore, the dynamic simulations results confirm that the frequency quality can be improved by the classic INP and CBRR, although there are also cases where it can deteriorate. However, the improved INP and CBRR generally improve the frequency quality in all cases. The improved INP and CBRR also enhance the provision of LFC compared to the classic INP and CBRR. Moreover, the improved INP and CBRR reduce the unintended exchange of energies, thus increasing the economic effects of the INP's and CBRR's activation. The improved INP increases energy exchange, therefore positive economic benefits can be expected in comparison to the system with the classic INP. However, the improved CBRR reduces energy exchange, therefore positive economic benefits can be expected in comparison to the system with the classic CBRR, since energy exchange is paid by CA via bidding process.

Simulation-based Evaluation of Frequency Response Analysis as a Diagnostic Tool for Deformations of Windings in Power Transformers : master's thesis
Ivan Papa, 2020, magistrsko delo

Opis: In this master’s thesis, we have established a model of a transformer winding. This model is based on the multi transmission line theory that allows us to model each turn of the winding separately. By using that approach, it was possible to calculate the frequency response of a winding in the required frequency range from 20 Hz to 2 MHz. The purpose of this simulation was to evaluate the frequency response analysis as a diagnostic tool for deformations of windings in power transformers. An evaluation was performed using sensitivity analysis of several parameters that indicate winding deformations. Finally, axial bending deformation was simulated and successfully diagnosed by applying the frequency response analysis.

Shear modulus of a saturated granular soil derived from resonant-column tests
H. Patiño, E. Martínez, Jesús González, A. Soriano, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents the results of 120 determinations of the shear modulus (G) of a saturated granular soil (20–40 Ottawa sand) in different conditions of relative density (Dr), effective consolidation pressure (σ’ c) and level of torsional excitation (Te). The equipment used was a resonant-column apparatus manufactured by Wykeham Farrance and the tests were performed with relative density values of 20, 40, 60 and 80%, effective consolidation pressures of 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 kPa, and torsional excitations of 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 volts (V), leading to shear strains (γ) between 0.002% and 0.023%. The results led to very simple empirical expressions for the shear modulus as a function of the angular strain for different effective consolidation pressures and void-ratio values.

Measurement and interpretation of the small strain stifness of Boštanj silty sand
Gregor Vilhar, Vojkan Jovičić, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents measurements, and an interpretation of these measurements, based on the use of bender-element probes for Boštanj silty sand. The samples were prepared at different initial void ratios and isotropically compressed up to 5 MPa. The bender-element technique was used to determine the dynamic shear modulus ($G_0$) of the soils at very small strains. The multiple bender-element probes were shot at different excitation frequencies in order to increase the reliability of the measurements. The $G_0$ stiffness was determined by using three different techniques: a) the first-time arrival, b) the phase-change method and c) the cross-correlation method. The systematic differences observed between the $G_0$ values, calculated using the three techniques, are discussed. The variation of $G_0$ in the log$G_0$ - log$p'$ plane was evaluated for the Boštanj silty sand and compared with other sands.

The impact of wind-power generation on the planning of regulating reserve
Dunja Srpak, 2018, doktorska disertacija

Opis: This doctoral thesis focuses on the efficient management of a power system with a large share of wind-power generation and on the methods for planning the operating reserve. The approach proposed in this research involves the use of data directly from the network’s dispatch center and the forecasting systems, as well as already existing day-ahead plans for wind and load power to determine the regulating reserve for the load frequency control (LFC). The same principle is used to find the optimal regulating reserve distribution (RRD) between the available generation units in the system for automatic generation control. It is developed using iterative power-flow computation with a reactive power correction and a stochastic search algorithm for transmission-loss minimization. Moreover, variations in the generation of individual wind-power plants (WPPs) from the plan are considered in the optimal RRD. A special focus of this research has been put on the Croatian power system due to the accessibility of relevant information and operating data. The obtained results of the testing with actual data from the Croatian power system indicate substantial savings in ancillary service costs for the LFC, while ensuring safe system operation. The considerable impact of variations from the plan for each individual WPP generation on the optimal RRD was also identified. Comparing the results for the daily sum of regulating reserves obtained with the proposed and the currently used approaches, the corresponding costs indicate a total saving of 21.2% for all 12 selected days in 2015 when using the proposed approach. In practice, a part of the reserve can be slow, i.e., with a lower unit price, thus the savings would be even higher. Furthermore, the obtained optimal RRD computed according to the proposed approach was compared with four commonly used RRDs in Croatia. The results obtained using the proposed approach indicate a decrease in the total transmission losses of between 1% and 2%. With a larger share of the generation from the WPPs and with more dispersed locations of the WPPs and regulating power plants a larger reduction in the transmission losses is expected.

Development of the testing environment for ultra high frequency receivers
Boris Hrastnik, 2018, magistrsko delo

Opis: The thesis describes the development of the test environment for Ultra High Frequency receivers. The proposed test environment replaces the universal, expensive and professional measurement equipment with dedicated computer controlled integrated circuits. For radio frequency modules` testing, all functionalities from the previous test environment are supported, e.g. existing tests, used modulation and coding techniques, as well as the communication package and interference control. The proposed test environment additionally supports more coding techniques and more use cases. While developing, we tended to small dimensions, low price, specifications, functionality and reliability. At first, the previous test environment is presented, as well as its shortcomings and the specifications for the proposed test environment. Further presented are the basic theory and test methods. At the end, we introduce the proposed test environment, its development and operations.
