Structural and chromatographic characterization of cation‑exchange membranes based on carboxymethyl/ nanofbrillated cellulose using lysozyme
Vanja Kokol, Tina Simčič, Urh Černigoj, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Bio-based membranes are becoming highly-desired low-cost, environmentally friendly, and readily available supports for the separation and purification of biomacromolecules. In this work, weak cation-exchange and highly (> 95%) microporous (> 80 μm) cellulose-based membranes were prepared from different weight ratios of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as anionic polymer and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) as a stabilizing and structural filler, by the freeze-casting process and citric-acid (CA) mediated in situ cross-linking (esterification). It was ascertained that mono-esterified/grafted CA also contributes to the total carboxylic groups (1.7–2.6 mmol/g), while the CMC-induced CNF orientation affected the membrane’s morphology and lysozyme (Lys) binding capacity. A static binding capacity (SBC) between 370 and 1080 mg/g, and equilibrium within 3.3 h for 1 g/mL Lys was thus achieved with increasing the total solid and CMC content by forming more isotropic microporous structures. The selected membranes were then packed in a chromatographic housing, analyzed for pressure drop, and evaluated for dynamic binding capacity (DBC), depending on the process performance (flow rates, Lys concentration). A DBC in the 165–417 mg/g range was determined at a throughput of 0.5 mL/min, and elution yield of 78–99% with > 95% recovery. The Lys adsorption and transfer were reduced by the increasing flow rate and membrane density due to compressibility issues, resulting in smaller and irregularly distributed pores and the unavailability of carboxylic groups. Although the DBC was still comparable with the commercial CIM® monoliths, the convection-based transport of molecules inside the membrane and the membrane stiffness needs to be improved in further research.

Barriers to knowledge sharing in the field of information security
Justyna Żywiołek, Joanna Rosak-Szyrocka, Borut Jereb, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Today, sharing knowledge requires taking into account many aspects. Variable environmental conditions, the people factor, and the security of resources are just a few that should be considered for a noticeable improvement in the functioning of the company. Supporting this course of action requires the identification of all barriers that may exist in the enterprise. Only the owner and senior management by establishing system and organizational changes can influence this element of the business. The aim of the article is to indicate the problems in this respect that block the proper functioning of the company in the field of information and knowledge exchange. The survey was conducted with the help of a questionnaire among 189 respondents. The industry has significantly decreased in the last few decades, currently there are 307 companies operating in Poland. Conclusions from the conducted research were collected on the basis of a questionnaire survey. The further stage of the research will be to compare the collected results with the results from Western European countries.

The role of rhetoric in teacher virtual exchanges
Maja Kerneža, Metka Kordigel Aberšek, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Educators’ rhetorical skills are pivotal in virtual collaboration between teachers and parents, enhancing communication clarity and overcoming cultural barriers, thereby enriching educational experience and fostering intercultural understanding. A review of scientific databases such as Academic Search Complete, ERIC, SCOPUS, and Web of Science, was conducted to identify peer-reviewed articles from 2018 onwards that explore the role of rhetoric in teacher virtual exchanges. Articles were analysed for themes, findings, biases, and research gaps. A notable finding is the lack of research on rhetoric in virtual teacher exchanges, despite its potential to overcome cultural barriers and enhance collaboration. The study reveals that effective rhetorical techniques can improve clarity, persuasiveness, and intercultural understanding in virtual exchanges, indicating a need for more research and educational programs in this area. Furthermore, the study extends to virtual communication between teachers and parents, especially with non-native speakers or those with limited proficiency in the official language. This highlights the need for teachers to use sophisticated rhetorical strategies in diverse linguistic situations to improve understanding and involvement. In summary, the research underscores the significant impact of rhetorical skills in virtual teacher exchanges, with broader implications for global collaboration and intercultural understanding in the educational sphere.

Towards trusted data sharing and exchange in agro-food supply chains: design principles for agricultural data spaces
Martina Šestak, Daniel Copot, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In the modern agricultural landscape, realizing data’s full potential requires a unified infrastructure where stakeholders collaborate and share their data to gain insights and create business value. The agricultural data ecosystem (ADE) serves as a crucial socio-technical infrastructure, aggregating diverse data from various platforms and, thus, advertising sustainable agriculture and digitalization. Establishing trustworthy data sharing and exchange in agro-food value chains involves socioeconomic and technological elements addressed by the agricultural data space (ADS) and its trust principles. This paper outlines key challenges to data sharing in agro-food chains impeding ADE establishment based on the review of 27 studies in scientific literature. Challenges mainly arise from stakeholders’ mistrust in the data-sharing process, inadequate data access and use policies, and unclear data ownership agreements. In the ADE context, interoperability is a particularly challenging topic for ensuring the long-term sustainability of the system. Considering these challenges and data space principles and building blocks, we propose a set of design principles for ADS design and implementation that aim to mitigate the adverse impact of these challenges and facilitate agricultural data sharing and exchange.

A comparison of analytical techniques for the determination and monitoring of charge variants in therapeutic proteins : master's thesis
Eva Kropušek, 2023, magistrsko delo

Opis: Charge variants of therapeutic proteins are considered to be drug product variants and process-related impurities. To monitor charge heterogeneity, the development of a new analytical method is needed. Imaged capillary isoelectric focusing, capillary zone electrophoresis, and cation exchange chromatography assays were evaluated as candidate assays to support the early development of two new biological drug candidates. These are the analytical techniques most frequently used in the pharmaceutical industry for monitoring charge heterogeneity. We compared the advantages and disadvantages of these analytical techniques for monitoring charge variants in two innovative monoclonal antibodies. The results obtained revealed similarities and differences in the various analytical techniques. However, there is only a short time-frame dedicated to analytical method development when developing new biological drugs. With this in mind, imaged capillary isoelectric focusing showed a perfect balance between the quality and speed of analysis.

Preparing students for mobility in vocational education and training
Tina Rajhman, 2019, magistrsko delo

Opis: The following master’s thesis focuses on preparing students on mobility in vocational education and training. The focus lies on English for specific purposes which is an integral part of English in technical secondary and vocational technical education. The thesis also concentrates on exchange programmes and their effects on students’ L2 and communicative competences. The above-mentioned educational programmes have to focus on both general English as well as English for specific purposes because the students need the knowledge at school, during the vocational training and later at work. The EU helps promoting language diversity by financing various international mobility programmes. The following MA thesis focuses on Erasmus+ which supports education and training at all levels and helps the schools send vocational education and training learners abroad. As proven by various studies, mobility has a beneficial effect on students’ English and communication skills. The case study included seven students attending upper-secondary programmes at the school centre Škofja Loka. The purpose of the study was to analyse the influence of the students’ vocational training abroad on their foreign language competences and to see whether students’ communicative competences improved during the vocational training abroad. The results were used to prepare helpful language exercises for future Erasmus+ students. According to students’ answers, a four-week exchange period is long enough for both weaker as well as more advanced students to make progress in English. All of them also confirmed that the most used language skills during the mobility were speaking and listening. For that reason, the practical part of the MA thesis presents four examples of exercises focusing on woodworking vocabulary, listening and speaking.

Self-assessment system : detrimental effects on entrepreneurial and innovative activity
Mitja Kovač, Patricia Kotnik, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Efficient regulatory mechanisms that induce innovation, co-operation and deter competition law infringements have recently been the subject of growing attention. Competition is essential to the innovation process which in general terms enables entrepreneurship. But so too is co-operation between firms which requires an exchange of information and may lead to inefficient collusive behaviour. The optimal trade-off between the provision of stable entrepreneurial incentives and the new European competition law’s reform with the self-assessment system has been largely missing from the current scholarly debate. This paper identifies the unintended, harmful horizontal side effects of this new European self-assessment system upon the entrepreneurial activity, offers a legal evaluation of the optimal entrepreneurial incentive mechanisms and provides legal and entrepreneurial arguments for an improved regulatory response.

Testing the sustainability of growth of the LJSEX in the January 2000 to May 2010 period
Aleš Ahčan, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In this paper we analyse the behaviour of the LJSEX, the main index of the Ljubljana Stock Exchange, in the period from January 2000 till May 2010. More precisely, we test for the presence of bubbles and antibubbles and try to determine whether or not a bubble could have been predicted (both the formation and the date of the bubble burst). Second, we also employ techniques used to model antibubbles to forecast the future behaviour of the LJSE index. Besides modelling index dynamics for the aforementioned period, we also seek to determine the factors that led to the bubble forming and later bursting. We find that the bubble could have been forecasted at least several months in advance. On the other hand, a very precise date of the crash seems harder to identify. By more closely analysing the interplay between interest rates, credit activity and the LJSEX, we conclude that there is a clear connection between decreasing interest rates, increased credit activity and the formation of a stock bubble. If there is a clear correlation between the early phase of a bubble and increased credit activity of the banking sector, the link between the end of the bubble and the restriction of credit activity is less pronounced. By fitting the extended antibubble model from (Johansen 1999a) we obtain the values of parameters that give us some indication of the future behaviour of the LJSEX. Based on these results we conclude that in the next few years we are likely to experience a period of increased volatility with no clear increasing or decreasing growth pattern.

Capabilities of statistical residual-based control charts in short-and long-term stock trading
Berislav Žmuk, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The aim of this paper is to introduce and develop additional statistical tools to support the decision-making process in stock trading. The prices of CROBEX10 index stocks on the Zagreb Stock Exchange were used in the paper. The conducted trading simulations, based on the residual-based control charts, led to an investor’s profit in 67.92% cases. In the short run, the residual-based cumulative sum (CUSUM) control chart led to the highest portfolio profits. In the long run, when average stock prices were used and 2-sigma control limits set, the residual-based exponential weighted moving average control chart had the highest portfolio profit. In all other cases in the long run, the CUSUM control chart appeared to be the best choice. The acknowledgment that the SPC methods can be successfully used in stock trading will, hopefully, increase their use in this field.
