Sustainability aspects of food and drinks offered in vending machines at Slovenian universities
Urška Rozman, Mateja Lorber, Anja Bolha, Jasmina Bevc Bahar, Miha Lavrič, Sonja Šostar-Turk, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Introduction: Vending machines offer a convenient way for food distribution, particularly favored by employees, students, and individuals seeking a quick snack. Food vending machines typically offer unhealthy, calorie-dense, and nutrient-poor options, which contribute to the rise of non-communicable diseases. Creating a healthier food environment is crucial, particularly in universities where students are developing their eating habits and becoming more independent. Key considerations for vending machines include the quality, nutritional value, and price of the products with a recent and growing attention toward sustainability. Methods: The present study thoroughly examined 30 vending machines across 30 faculties in Slovenia. The analysis focused on assessing the variety and sustainability of the available products. The following was evaluated through three primary criteria, based on the information available on the product label: nutritional quality, environmental impact (palm oil content, packaging materials, and sustainability certificates), and socioeconomic indicators (suitability for people with special dietary needs). Results: The results revealed a low proportion of products met the proposed sustainability criteria, highlighting the need to promote sustainability in the vending machine industry. Although food categories like dairy products, fruits, and nuts have better nutritional profiles, they are underrepresented. In contrast, items like biscuits, crisps, snacks, and pre-prepared sandwiches often exceed recommended fat, salt, and sugar levels. More than one-quarter of products contained palm oil, only two were labeled as palm oil-free, and a limited proportion of products were suitable for individuals with special dietary requirements such as gluten sensitivity and lactose intolerance. Discussion: Improving the food selection in vending machines, guided by suggested sustainability criteria, presents a promising strategy for reshaping the food environment and promoting sustainable healthy diets, taking into account nutritional, environmental, and socioeconomic indicators.

Gamified learning for sustainability : an innovative approach to enhance hydrogen literacy and environmental awareness through simulation-based education
Uroš Kramar, Matjaž Knez, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The transition to sustainable energy systems presents a critical challenge for the 21st century, necessitating both technological advancements and transformative educational strategies to foster awareness and knowledge. Hydrogen technologies are pivotal for decarbonization, yet public understanding and acceptance remain limited. This study introduces and evaluates a novel gamified educational framework, uniquely integrating simulationbased learning, collaborative problem-solving, and adaptive instructional scaffolding to enhance hydrogen literacy and sustainability awareness. Unlike traditional pedagogical approaches, this method actively engages learners in real-world decision-making scenarios, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications. This study involved adolescents aged 13–15 from two distinct educational and cultural contexts, one in Europe and one in the Middle East. A pre–post study design assessed knowledge acquisition, gamification engagement, and environmental awareness shifts. Findings reveal statistically significant improvements in technical knowledge and strong positive perceptions of gamified learning as an effective sustainability education tool across both cultural groups (Europe and the Middle East). Variations in engagement across cultural contexts suggest the need for adaptive, context-sensitive educational frameworks. While the findings indicate significant short-term knowledge gains, this study does not assess long-term knowledge retention, which remains an important area for future research. This research contributes to sustainability education by demonstrating how strategically designed gamification can foster behavioral engagement, enhance environmental literacy, and support the global energy transition agenda. This study offers a pioneering perspective on integrating interactive learning methodologies to cultivate sustainability competencies among younger generations.

Analyzing supply chain dynamics to enhance their environmental performance in the age of emerging technologies : doctoral dissertation
Samar Kamal Mohamed, 2024, doktorska disertacija

Opis: Amid the rapid increase in environmental degradation and the depletion of natural resources, there has been a noticeable shift in global focus from economic issues to environmental concerns. The research conducted for the doctoral dissertation addresses the complexity of building supply chain resilience (hereafter: SCR) for long-term environmental sustainability. It examines the potential of new technologies, particularly blockchain technology (hereafter: BCT), as an innovative tool for enhancing the sustainability and resilience of supply chains, with a focus on uncertain environments. Utilizing Systems Theory (hereafter: ST) and the Knowledge-Based View (hereafter: KBV), this study aims to demonstrate how BCT adoption can improve environmental supply chain performance (hereafter: ESCP). Empirical testing was conducted with respondents from manufacturing and service organizations in Egypt. The data collected was analyzed using structural equation modelling. The results revealed that BCT adoption alone had a negative direct impact on ESCP. However, when this relationship was mediated by SCR and sequentially mediated by customer integration and green customer information sharing, the results were positively rehabilitated. This research provides valuable insights into how organizations can adapt to dynamic business environments and extends the theories of KBV and ST. It offers an empirical contribution by filling the gap in a more comprehensive understanding of how ESCP can be enhanced by adopting BCT.

Expressing added value in food supply chains
Nejc Zidar, Jernej Turk, Jernej Prišenk, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Value-added food supply chains are chains that maintain positive social, environmental, and community values which are integrated into the production process from the primary producer to the final consumer, ensuring economic, social, and environmental sustainability, thus forming a sustainable agricultural and food production system. The evaluation of the value added in each chain is based on indicators, which are a tool to measure changes in the actual situation or to show performance trends in achieving the progress set by the objectives. The presented indicators are based on publicly available statistics and foreign literature that allow measuring value added in specific livestock chains at aggregate level (beef production, pork production and dairy production) and are based on publicly available statistics in the Republic of Slovenia. The need to produce indicators of value added in livestock food supply chains arises from the large differences in structural changes in the sector itself and in the development and economic performance of the various livestock industries.

Assessing the effects of a hydropower plant basin on fish spawning in an upstream river tributary
Gorazd Hren, Andrej Predin, Matej Fike, Marko Pezdevšek, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents a combined modeling approach to evaluate the ecological effects on the habitat of an upstream tributary of a river with a series of hydropower plants. The influence is investigated of the last planned hydropower plant to be built, which has a large impact on the river ecosystem. The new hydropower plant basin will affect the tributary with hydropeaking in the upstream basin. A simulation was conducted of spawning conditions for two protected fish species. The analysis combined a hydro-morphological model with a fish module that considers the water depth and velocity necessary for fish reproduction. The different river discharge scenarios were simulated, incorporating the hydropeaking effects of the new hydropower plant basin on the upstream tributary. With the new hydropower plant, sustainable measures are planned to prevent the damaging negative impacts that could lead to the degradation of the river ecosystem and the destruction of the existing ecosystem at the river’s confluence. The results indicate that, after the hydropower plant begins operation, the habitat`s suitability will decrease, and the planned sustainable measures will not provide a fully satisfactory solution.

Effect of usage of industrial robots on quality, labor productivity, exports and environment
Jasna Prester, Iztok Palčič, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Industrial robots are slowly finding their way into manufacturing companies. This paper examines the impact of robots on productivity, exports, quality, sustainability and labor in European manufacturing companies. There is little research on the use of industrial robots and their impact in developed countries. Most research relates to Chinese companies, and often, the data are outdated. The data in this paper come from the European Manufacturing Survey project, which was conducted in 2022 and includes 476 manufacturing companies. The results of the impact of industrial robots on quality, labor productivity, exports and green technologies are determined using a T-test between companies that use industrial robots and those that do not. However, the impact of higher investment in environmental technologies by industrial robot users was examined by a two-stage OLS regression analysis with control variables representing the contextual characteristics of the companies. The results show positive effects on all of the variables. The results show that the greater use of robots occurs in industries with low-to-medium technology intensity, that robots contribute to labor productivity and exports and that companies that use robots also tend to use environmentally friendly technologies.

Measurement and improvement of airport’s environmental behavior: an empirical study from North African Countries (NAC) : doctoral dissertation
Ahmed Eid, 2024, doktorska disertacija

Opis: Environmental challenges have grown in worldwide relevance. Considering that most environmental issues are due to human behavior, it is crucial to be aware of environmental sustainability issues in airports where many environmental problems arise. It is worth noting that, in the global society of the 21st century, air transportation serves an important purpose as one of the logistics operations (a crucial component of the worldwide economic supply chain). Otherwise, the aviation sector is one of the factors that contribute to the degradation of the environment. Thus, environmental sustainability in airports is essential, as it is associated with conserving the airport environment from degradation. Since human actions create most environmental problems, fostering eco-friendly habits is seen as a viable strategy for a sustainable future. Hence, enforcing environmentally friendly behavior is vital to achieving environmental sustainability, considering the governing authorities' continuous and rising demand for transportation system sustainability. Thus, under the lances of reasoned action theory, the research aim is to improve the airport's environmental sustainability by developing a new model to develop specific stakeholders' environmental behavior, as environmental sustainability has become a pledge of every supply chain member. Investigating airport individuals' environmental behavior by measuring the impact of airport environmental knowledge and the airport's environmental sustainability performance on their environmental behavior through attitude and testing the moderating role of environmental advertising on the indirect effect of environmental sustainability performance and environmental sustainability knowledge. Notably, the research is based on the reasoned action theory since it concerns the motivation for behavior. The research contributes to extending the reasoned action theory since it strives to adopt the theory in North African airports. Moreover, this research would contribute to expanding the reasoned action theory by providing a theoretical model for understanding its abstract concepts by examining the impact of environmental sustainability knowledge, performance, attitude, and advertising on developing environmental behavior.
